ok I just purchased my brand new 88 lincoln LSC for a daily driver it has 212k on it but heres my problem when i start it in the morning i hear a tapping noise coming from up front open the hood its slight noise on top but if i get down farther between the tire and the fender "either side" its louder... let it warm up for 5 minutes or so and come back out and the tapping is very slight now... drive it for about 23 miles get out once again and dont hear anything.. drive back hom "23 miles" shut it off for about 5 seconds, start it back up and the tapping is very slight again... WTF??? sorry guys i posted something about a lincoln on here im still in the works of rebuilding the merk :( sad sad sad spun a rod bearing, but any info would be appreciated, i posted this same question on lincolnvscadillac.com and it takes days for a response.. unfortunately I cant wait that long to get somewhat of an answer... im thinking it has something to do with the oil pressure or maybe oil pump? but anything would be greatly appreciated!!! let me know!

How about an exhaust leak in that area?

Sounds like piston slap.....temperature sensitive...as the piston heats up it expands and stops??
A lot of GM cars did this and never caused any problems..........I had a Z-28 that always did it!!
If it were a bad bearing it would get worse hot as the oil would be thinner??:cool4:
My $.02...FWIW??

4drpower,
I had a '90 Mark VII LSC with the 5.0 HO. Could it be that you have one or more hydraulic lifters that is slowly going bad? Sounds like it pumps up fine as it warms up, but quickly loses its pressure as it sits. What weight oil do you use? Factory spec was 10W30 I believe. With 21K miles on the odo, it is possible that normal wear is starting to creep into the picture. You could try bumping up the low side nbr of the oil to say, 15W40 and see what effect that has.
See if you can get DR or Zack to respond.

^^^^+1 on a lifter possibility, and also to use a heavier oil now.

200K+ miles is alot to ask w/out seeing reduced oil pressure in a 5.0.
Worn bearings will allow oil to flow through/out of increased clearance lowering oil pressure.
Worn pump well be low on pressure. One or both of the above will cause bearing knock on start-up and have dirty/sticking lifters tapping on and off at any time!
One thing to watch out for are plastic coated cam gears. They start to lose the ends of the gear teeth at that age and tend to plug the pickup screen and even work through the sceen and sieze up the oil pump. This happened on my '68 302.
Don't know if they were still using the plastic coated gears on yours.

hmmm i dont know, i found that a PCV valve under the drivers side of the upper intake that runs down into the lower intake manifold???? i guess i dunno i really didnt look to see exactly where it went just know that wherever it went it wasnt secured in the hole it was completely popped out... dunno if that had anything to do with it or not i guess ill find out in the morning, im guessing it doesnt because its just a PCV valve.. but because of the mileage I am running 10w40 in it now rather than the spec 10w30... this thing is driving me nuts... its leaking coolant out of the reservoir bottle believe it or not, im guessing because the radiator may be clogged when i dumped some pepper in it to cure a small leak.. it leaks tranny fluid out of the pan gasket im assuming, and oil from somewhere up top, not out of the valve covers but somewhere up there and its running down the back of the tranny and onto the ground.... oh.. and ummmmm anyone want to come to cincinnati and help me pull the motor out of the black beast??? haha im only so far and trying to figure out how to remove the stearing shaft/knucke by the drivers side header to pull the motor out, so i dont have to do the impossible and try unbolting the crazy kooks

You really should replace the screen filter that is under the PCV valve. It's hard to see, but use a long pick and it should pull up and out. Clogged screens have been known to cause excessive crankcase pressure which in turn causes lots of oil leaks.

If you are continuing to leak coolant out of the reservoir I would be checking for a leaking head gasket. Head gasket leaks can "blow" into the cooling system through the gasket and pressurize the cooling system causing leaks and/or overheating.

does the bars leaks brand head gasket repair block sealer etc stuff work? just curious another question my gpa has a 99-newer grand marquis with the digital intrument gauges and the fuel gauge always reads empty.. even when you fill with gas, I was thinking a bad sending unit but it only has like 28k miles on it.. check engine is on etc.. he beats the hell out of that thing its all tore up, body and interior wise so i dont know

Any pour in leak repair is a temporary repair - if it works at all!
If the GM has a check engine light on - read the trouble code it might tell you exactly what is wrong!
If the only thing not working on the digital display is the fuel gauge, start back at the sending unit and check for loose/broken wires then check the sending unit.
