View Full Version : Well I finally got into an accident with her!

I was driving down a thickly settled street in worcester and the roads were not treated yet. I was going along and all of a sudden the rear end fish tailed and before I knew it the car was perpendicular with the road and I was sliding towards a tree. Well the front pass tire hit the tree and dug into the rim which spun the rear end of the car around and the rear pass wheel hit the curb and shifted the WHOLE REAR END of the car about six inches towards the drives side! There was no body damage at all, but I can only imagine what the rear end looks like underneath! Anyways, I am in the road perpendicular to the road directly across from a parking lot entrance. A kid from my EMT class that I was leaving, stopped to help. He had a jacked wrangler with a winch on the front so we hook the winch to the front of my car and we put tension on the line. Just then, a car come down the road and I am flailing my arms and he had plenty of time to stop if the roads we decent, but they were absolutely horrible and the kid slammed into the winch line going across the road! We got my car into the lot and that is when the police showed up, along with my friend that I called. During the whole ordeal I was trying to call AAA and they were all tied up and I couldn't get through. The cop was an excellent guy and handled the situation well. He got the hook there quicker than I could of and he was very nice about the whole thing talking about how he can relate to what happened and about how the cruisers are. The tow truck came and hooked her from the back and he locked the steering wheel with the seat belt (I had it towed only a mile away). I am just glad that the cop was nice about everything and wasn't a jerk asking if I had been drinking and stuff, because I was very shaken and just wanted the night to be over! Will have to wait for the appraisers verdict. I will have pics later.

Sorry to hear about your MM. :( Glad to hear that you weren't injured.

I am having some difficulty understanding exactly what happened based on your description ^^^^. Fishtailing would lead me to believe that you were on the throttle and the car's rear end was swinging left and right. But you said you were going downhill in untreated slick conditions. Not a place to be on the gas. Seems more likely that you got on the brakes for some reason, tried to steer out of a skid, and had the back end come around on you. In such conditions, I stay off the brakes and just let gravity work and hope that someone doesn't pull out and make me hit the brakes.

I am very good at driving in winter conditions. I usually fishtail etc on purpose without problem. Last night, I was driving and the road was a slight inclide UP... I just always say I was driving down the road as saying I was driving... I was accelerating from an intersection and was on a slight incline... The roads were untreated and I am used to that, but I didn't realize is was iced up in this location... I was probably going too fast for the conditions, but not too fast for that roadway... as I accelerated she swung out to the right and was on ice skates from there and 4500 lbs going perpendicular to the road on ice... there was nothing I could do... it sucked!!!

Hope the frame is straight. Looks like the control arms, watts link, sway bar, and such took the blow. Sounds like a good time for upgrades!:D Get your estimates because you'll definately have to get the frame checked out, maybe even tweaked, but i suggest you work with the repair place on getting metco's and addco's as they are better and probably even cheaper.

You're not alone on this one, We all know how to drive and the MM can get away from any of us in any given situation. The particulars are no where near as important as the end result, MM protecting it's owner. It's better to feel for our members in this kind of situation rather than hurt the feeling of the people involved.

I hope for a speedy and accurate repair.

Man, I lost mine on a straight last year, pulled out pass and hit black ice accelerating. IIRC at least 3 360s. The Good Lord was riding with us that night as I kept it on the road and out of the woods which were less than 10' from the pavement.

Thanks for the support and thanks for helping get some pics up Adam! No need to start an argument guys... I see where I was unclear as to what happened and had no problem clarifying... I am not mad and hope this is a lesson to other people... I am very well known for horsing around, but in this case I wasn't and I was just caught off guard... Everyone on this site is great and I am glad things are starting to get back to normal around here! As you can see from the pics, the rear end shifted pretty good and I don't know what got knocked loose under the car, but when it was in gear and I tried to move it out of the road, there was just a clanking sound... I would love to jack it up and see what it looks like under there, but I am not going to touch it! I am going to get a rental tomorrow for a week and hopefully find a cheap beater to buy... IT WILL PROBABLY BE CHEAPER THAT WAY!!!

Anyone in CT, RI, or MA know of any good deals!?!?

Thanks again everyone!

I know I am not going to find much in that range that is decent for highway travels, but if I can't, I will just continue on with the renting

She will probably be down for around a month if she isn't totaled... I don't think she is, but there is no telling what is going on under there until we get her up in the air! Going to have them fix the body damage from the ice storm as well... So it could be longer! This is why I want to find a beater... just in case

It is Commerce... They are being very good about it... I just haven't gotten it out of my yard yet and to the garage... The garage that I am choosing can't look at it for a week and then after that I figure it is going to take them awhile to get parts and put it all together and I need the wheels replaced... then they need to fix the body and I need the rear bumper plastic as well... I have a bad feeling that there is alot to be done, I could be wrong!

This is the tree and curb that got me... front right tire hit the tree on the left side and spun the rear end around and the passenger rear hit the curb where the sewer hole is... Black spot on sidewalk at the right is brake fluid.

let us know what they replace...if they replace the rear bumper, ask for your old one back.....please.

I don't see it being totalled....unless something in the driveline broke.....

if it is totalled...whats the plan??

Egon Spengler
02-23-2009, 03:04 PM
I have no plan if it is totaled... the rear bumper is stretched on the underside... I don't know why anyone would want it... The drivetrain is messed up somewhere... something spins and clanks underneath when in drive, but something is disconnected from the trans to the wheels! I just don't know what yes... nothing is hanging down... Seems like I may need a whole rear end!!! Plus the fixing of the tree falling on it over the winter!! That will be a separate claim that I need to call in tomorrow and go down and show the guys where the dents are and that I need new rain guards

I cleaned her out last night and they just called me this morning telling me that they will be there right away to come and get her. Just got off the phone with the shop and he says from what they see that it looks pretty bad and it seems like he wants it to be totaled by the sounds of it... I think this dude wants my car to be totaled and for me to just take the insurance money and run so that he can buy it!!!! I don't know what or who to trust anymore... They are taking to their shop and the adjuster will go to look at it again... my car is in really rough shape and I don't know what to do... If it is totaled do I buy it back or chock it up as a lost cause and move on? 90,000 miles on it and I still owe alot of money on her! Guess we will just have to see what the adjuster says....

TIPS?

Thats BS there is no reason to total it! :mad2: I can see control arms being messed up, it needs the air bag(s) from the picture and some body mounts needing to be straighted with a BFH but not totaling it. I really hope they take care of it for you, that would really suck if they pulled a crappy stunt and totaled it to get it off their books :bigcry:

That way I have my own car instead of a rental... Need to talk with him more about that to make sure that I am not going to get screwed! It may be totaled due to the myriad of things wrong with it... I will probably be claiming the tree damage on it as well... if it is totaled I might walk away from it and look for a new vehicle... If I do, unfortunately, I may not be looking for a marauder... Good thing about the total is that if it is and I do walk away from it, I have my marauder wheels and tires to sell! Or throw on my next vehicle like Adam did!!! Only I won't be buying a Fusion... no offense Adam... just kind of would like a truck again maybe... If it is ok and gets fixed, then that will be super! It's because all the damage is supplemental. It was secondary....so it will nickle and dime the insurance company to fix it. I could see possible cracking on mounts, bend parts, etc from when the rear was pushed sideways.

thats one of the risks when they dry the paint in high heat !

seriously, if you wind up needing a rear, i have two complete rears here at my shop, i am only like an hour away.

It appears the back tire didn't fully seat on the rim, call em back.

Well, I guess I found out what happened to your car. Sorry to hear Tom. I drove the MM through one winter, the following year it was off the road. IF you want another Panther, let me know as my body guy has about 10 for sale, and 2 MM's if you wish for another one. Under $10k I believe.

I snapped the axle and messed the rear end up... plus I have to get tree damaged fixed on her too... she will hopefully be good as new soon and I can get the good wheels on her!!

UPDATE: Rear end is out and they are replacing ALOT of the rear end with new parts. Once they get it rolling again, they will start worrying about the cosmetics... I am just glad that they have gotten the insurance company to agree upon things and are moving in the right direction... fortunately enough for me, my roomate's cousin is a merchant mariner and he is away at sea for 4 months and I have borrowed his '97 Buick LeSabre (one of two of his cars) that has just under 125,000 miles on her... I am thinking about talking to him when he comes back and possibly purchasing the vehicle off him as my winter beater for next year!

so it's getting repaired? what was the estimate?

be sure to note ever tick, tock, whistle, tap, clunk, vibration, etc afterwords...having been in the field, and doing a few estimates, I would worry there is some secondary damage further up the driveline.

Those buicks are great beaters, my neighbor has one...it's like a tank.

UPDATE: I drove down after hours today to see if my car was in the body shop's corral of cars and IT WAS! It had the hood popped a crack. I wasn't able to get a real good view of it, but the rear end looked NORMAL and the guy said that they shot some paint. I guess there was a suspension issue in the front end still that they wanted to work out before handing her back over to me. From what they are saying it could be this week! Fingers crossed!

Hey guys! She's back! It is raining as you know so I am not sure what she looks like. From what I can tell though, she looks good... It has to go back in a month or so for some tree damage work as well... The body shop guy said to stretch the space between the two claims so that they wouldn't total it! I will probably have him do other stuff and maybe reclear the whole car to make her look AWESOME!

Keep me posted on the work to Sean's car... I know your area so directions probably won't be too difficult!

Got up at 7:30 this morning to throw the MM wheels on her! She looks good but I think the rear suspension needs to be raised a little... I am bringing the car back in a month or so for the tree damage where I might have them repaint the whole car for me... Whatever the insurance company won't absorb, I will cover... Get her looking spiffy!
