Sounds like a plan, now if you want an alagator effect, use different brands of paint :D

"nothingsense" used sandpaper to scuff up the emblem, then sprayed it with nightshades.

A coat of plastic primer, then paint for me.

Or at least get ride of the Mercury "waterfall" and do a godshead, use a center cap that you can get from the dealer. Not hard to do at all.
