Hey guys, having an issue that almost got my MM and myself into a nasty wreck! For some odd reason the MM will not shift into O/D. I was driving along and made a quick lane change. Once I got back on the gas the car just revved like it was in neutral. After pulling off the road several times the MM still would not shift right. I had to manually shift it and keep O/D off in order to drive. I am also experiencing the temp gauge running hot. Second day in a row for the temp issue. Comes down after I throw it in neutral and give it some gas. The temp issue started after an oil change. Maybe bad filter?? I do have a lidio tune, but that is the only mod so far. Any one else have this issue. Or maybe some remedies to get the ghost out. Thanks for any help!!

Sounds like you have air in the system. There was a time my car would shift real funny when I had the temps go up past normal. Try getting the air out and then go from there.

the air that you are referring to is the air in the coolant system correct? the sensor not being able to read the air and steam- only liquid right. That fixed the O/D problem as well?

The air is a common issue with these engine. You have to "burp" it to get all the air out.
I had air and the transmission shifted way too early for some strange reason which made me look down and saw my temp gauge was above normal. Im not sure if thats the same case for you but its possible.
The O/D band is weak point of the tranny. I read time and time again that if you plan to go WOT, make sure the O/D is off.
Hope its nothing serious in your case.

that was one of the first things my trans guy suggested as well. Then again maybe ford screwed up when they installed my water pump that went out under warranty. Thanks a lot. going to let it cool and burp the system. Also probably wouldnt hurt to flush it out. you know ford wouldn't do a system flush with water pump, that would make too much sense. regardless thanks a lot.

The tranny problem may be related to the wire chafing issue present on some early '03s. Search wire chafe and see what shows up

Then again maybe ford screwed up when they installed my water pump that went out under warranty. I'm confused...did the temp issue start after the oil change or after the water pump change? I doesn't make any sense that doing an oil change would cause high coolant temps, unless they forgot to put oil back in. Even if the filter was bad, it wouldn't cause high temps, either.
As the others suggested ^^^, try burping the system. Motors with aluminium heads do NOT like to be overheated. Once you get that fixed, then we can address the shifting issue.

Unless Jiffy Lube did the oil change...they are famous for putting engine oil in the transmission and vise versa.

No, coolant issue is gone. think it was just a fluke that it started after the oil change. The shifting issue is that it does not shift into O/D at all. ONce it tries it just revves like its in neutral. I can drive it fine with O/D turned off. BUt any transfer back just goes to neutral. I have talked around and sounds like it is trans going. Any suggestions on replacements or rebuilds i guess would be helpful looking ahead. Thanks
