Went to change my oil and install the oil pressure sender for my aeroforce gauge last week, I noticed that there was tranny fluid leaking onto the cross member. What are my options for fixing this? Rebuild tail shaft, new tail shaft? I can assume the cause is going to the racetrack plus multiple high speed runs down ocean parkway:) with the stock drive shaft.

What size rear gears do you have?

The gears are 4.10's

That could be the issue. I replaced 3 tail shaft seals before receiving a new driveshaft that solved the problem. The MMX drive shift I have is currently out of production. Other on this site have experienced the same problem.

How hard was it to replace the seal? I am planning on upgrading the drive shaft.

That's common w/ 4.10's and the stock shaft.

I have one of the out of production MMX shafts I'll be getting rid of soon. First in line is Randy (Local Boy), if he turns it down I'll see who's next in line.

Your tranny fluid cant leak if you don't have any in the car;)

lol my fluids are checked every time I drive, I spent a lot of money on my motor, so I'm quite paranoid :P

cant he just replace the seal? nothing is wrong with the housing/tailshaft right?

If thats the case just drop the drive shaft, pull out old seal, pound in new.

as long as the bushing in the tailshaft is ok, just replace the seal, if the probem comes back then go further, but it may just be a bad seal.

If I replace the seal I will also replace the drive shaft. I will have to upgrade the drive shaft eventually might as well to it now so I dont have to worry about the seal going south again.

IIRC, another option is swapping in a 2000 P71's driveshaft?

Or getting the stock shaft balanced to a higher RPM.

Blue Thunder's tailshaft seal was leaking when I had it in for other leaks to be fixed. Mileage is about 55000, stock gears. Also leaking was engine rear main seal. All fixy fixy now. Was a big wallet ouchy at the dealership though.

Or getting the stock shaft balanced to a higher RPM.

I have a high speed balanced driveshaft and it did not solve the issue.

On the track I run 245/35/18 tires. This gives an effective 4.10 rear gear. I had my driveshaft rebalanced after my first track day, it was better, but I have still gone through two tailshaft seals. It is easy to determine when the seal is going, the seal weeps, the fluid gets on the driveshaft, gets thrown onto the hot exhaust/mufflers and I get a plume of blue smoke and subsequent black flag :o

It might work for the occasional 1/4 pass, but for extended high speed use I am looking for a MMX or equivalent driveshaft to solve the problem.
