without a trans brake how is this effective for an auto car? do you just set it really low?

03slickvic
03-05-2009, 01:13 PM
you can set it to whatever the stall of your converter is.....if its 2500rpms set the unit to 2400rpms....just under the stall speed....much softer rev limiter then the ecm rev limit....

Excuse my ignorance, but WTF does this little electronic gizmo do?

From the MSD website:

"This 2-Step connects right to your late model Ford to produce consistent launches and quicker 60-foot times by setting an rpm limit to stage with. When activated, the rpm will be held at a steady rpm and once the green light comes on, release the clutch and take off - but be sure to hold on! The rpm is adjusted with two built-in rotary dials ranging from 2,000- 11,900 rpm in 100 rpm increments. A handy LED shows when the launch rev limit is active."

it allows the motor to get the rpms up for a launch (benefit being consistent reaction times).... it has an adjustment screw to set the rpm you want to car to leave the lights at....it plugs inline to your ignition harness...10 minute install tops...

If Im sitting at the light, Wouldnt the torque convertor limit how much RPM I can launch at? I think this would be better for a manual car then automatic.

You'd have to set it low under the stall speed, or get a trans brake.

Ok, if this limits the RPM, how do you release it to go to full throttle? I understand the principle, but not how it functions. Does the transbrake do essentially the same thing?

You install a magnetic switch on the brake I imagine, so when you get off the brake the limit is turned off. I imagine there is a safety thing on it too that if your rpm is at a high level it won't switch on when you hit the brake... like it won't turn on unless the rpm is 1K in the first place when you hit the brake.

A trans brake locks 1st and reverse, so no it's not quite the same as a 2-step.

Wire it to the brake light instead of the clutch switch. Install a power switch so it can be turned off when it is not being used. I don't think it would matter if it was left on for drag racing, once you get to the big end and hit the brakes, activating the lower rev limit shouldn't have any effect since you're stopping anyway.

I think that just blew the 10 minute install time.

Yep, Sherman & Chris have a good write up on this and how it effects your engine rpm if you forget to turn 'off' the master switch before hitting the brake pedal.
IIRC it is on MCM.com...'New world record ET' thread.

there's two ways to run the switch to activate the unit....one way is with a 12v source, the other way is by running a ground switch.....both work...i was going to run a hand pressure switch to a ground source....easiest quickest way...

So even if this allows me to go above the RPMs that my convertor allows during stalling, it will be basically like a neutral drop which 4500lbs + neutral drop = Many broken parts.

FordNut
03-06-2009, 09:16 AM
No. It's the same thing as preloading your car to a specific RPM at the tree, then stomping it to the floor when you launch. It just does it electronically so the preload RPM is precisely controlled to the same RPM every time (hard to do manually) and it's quicker than the release brake with one foot and stomp it with the other technique. You just stage, hold the brake, put it to the floor. It misses and cuts out at the preset RPM until you let off the brake then it switches to the actual WOT RPM limit.

BlownMerc
03-06-2009, 09:20 AM
Actually, it wouldn't be much different than loading the converter to max stall with the 'ole two-foot method. The difference is, you can mat the accelerator with the two-step turned on and it will hold it at the dialed in rpm, so all you have to concentrate on is cutting a light. The other advantage is with the pedal already to the floor, you get instant WOT versus the milliseconds it takes to go WOT. It also saves from mistakes in the beams from your right foot bouncing the revs up and down.

Wouldn't be like a neutral drop in an a/t car unless you're running a transbrake.

You got it all wrong. The intent is to control your launches and add consistency for drag race competitions, not test-n-tune. It's all about the sixty foot times. What we normally do is raise the RPM's, watch the light, then press the gas on first amber. The MSD allows you to not focus on the rpm's, just the light. Once you release the brake, off you go. You will not be able to set the launch control higher then 2,500 rpm, mine is set to 2,000. You will need a race setup anyway. Upgraded axles, shafts, transmission upgrades, TQ converter, additional coolers, Drag radials or slicks, would be very helpful.
The key to this mod is tires. If you race with street radials (of any kind) you will smoke your tires on the line and give the advantage to the opposite lane.
