Dash sand bag thingey, and move it from car to car. In my experience, those suction cup things always fail, never mind the mess, and obstructed view. :)

My Garmin Street Pilot came with a sand bag, but I recall seeing universal sand bag holders on the accessories shelf at Best Buy.
With the bulk of the Street Pilot, you'd need a suction cup the size of a toilet plunger.

+1.... AVIC D2.
I have a Panavise mount that goes in the dash. Look for P/N 75125-195.
http://www.panavise.com/index.html
I'll sell mine for $25.00 shipping included.
I fab'd a thin metal shelf (steel) with a slight bend and inserted one end in the space between the radio and the dash cutout.
Glued a plastic lid, upside down, and slightly bigger than the GPS suction cup to the shelf, then mounted the GPS to the lid using the suction cup.
Painted the whole thing black. Unit is angled toward the driver at my eye level and is even with the top of the dash so there no visual obstruction. Radio controls remain accessible except for the clock and that's displayed on the GPS anyway.
Not too much vibration, have a pair of wooden Chinese chop sticks to poke the screen when I want to change something on the fly. Works pretty good. can swivel the unit to the passenger side and they can poke it.
Car's on a road trip with the wife, so I'll post a picture next week. Her car has developed a undiagnosed rattle from underneath, maybe a CAT, so didn't want to risk a breakdown.

Great idea Pat. Why is it that us kids always have the best ideas. :D

I had an even better idea, but then I am one of us kids, too. Took advantage of the very good deals on the Pioneer F90BT and the very good Magindat who will install it in the dash (where they belong) this weekend so that the Garmin Street Pilot can take up full time duty on the sand bag in Penny's car. Now no excuse for either one of us to get "lost." Check out the prices on the Pioneer GPS systems...great deals. Dennis:beer:

+1 on the bracket idea. That's what I used to install my Sirius radio in the Bluesmobile, works great.

I'm shocked. I thought you kept an extra woman locked in the glove box all this time. I've heard her voice!

I have two:
One is mounted in my head, it's called my brain and it gets me most places pretty decent. The other is in the pocket behind my seat, it's called an atlas and it picks up where my brain left off.

Hey, this may be a bit of a thread hijack, but what's everyone running for a GPS, and what are your thoughts on your particular unit?
I've got a Mio MOOV 500, pleased with it so far. 4.7" screen, text to speech, only thing that sucks is battery life. Less than 2 hrs. unless I'm plugged in with the 12V power cord.

Love the Round Sand bag thing. 14 and change on amazon. 30 in Wal mart.
Sticking it on the windshield leaves that annoying round mark when you take it down.

Suction cup very high on the windshield (in the MM as well as in the MGM). The screen of the GPS (I2 and I5) just comes between the mirror and the line of the roof.

Just bought the Knight Rider Gps by the same company. Currently making custom mount using disk, suction cup and frame from previous unit.
Not current mount or gps altough this one served me well for MV IV V Seymour and partly to Kentucky, but mounting will be similar.

Here are some pics of the mounting set up for my Sirius radio, I think it's a similar cofiguration to Pat's, location works well.

I haven't seen my mounting listed here yet............
I put velcro soft pads on the back of my Garmin and the velcro stickies (the loopy opposite pads) "glued" (yes glued) to my dash on the sliver trim just to the right of the steering wheel. It works great and provides great visibility through the steering wheel. Also, it's not very visible from outside (at a distance) and I throw it back in the center arm rest when I leave the car. The only downside is that I have to rely on the batteries since it's not hard wired to juice. I leave the charging cord in the center arm rest and plug it in when I put it away. So far it's worked fine but I wish it was wired for power all the time.

That's where i have my multimedia gps courtesy of velcro and custom made piece for proper tilt since, it functions better as mp3 player than gps.

Waymon,
It's a little channel-shaped metal bracket that I picked up from Best Buy and custom bent to fit. I'll try to get some pics with the radio removed to give you a better view.
