View Full Version : Airbags?

Let's talk about airbags. No, not Knine or your significant other. I'm talking about the ones in the Marauder dash and steering wheel.
The guys doing my cage asked about them yesterday while discussing where all the bars are going to be placed. I've decided to have the front down bars go through the dash to make it easier to get in and out. Part of my job is to prep the car and that's when we started talking about airbags. I am considering removing them because I'll have 5-point harnesses. So, are the airbags worth something? Let me rephrase that, are they worth anything to anyone here?
Along those lines, how difficult are they to remove? Anyone done this yet?
Also, if I decide to leave them in there, will they accidentally go off if the battery is disconnected?

The only bags that i've removed where on my older f150. I was told by a friend of mine who does body work that some model vehicles hold a charge after disconnecting the battery, some up to a couple hours. He told me just to disconnect the battery and let her sit overnight and then disconnect the wiring and remove. I had no issues at all doing so.

Just my opinion, but if your car is going to be driven on the road I'd leave the steering wheel bag in.
Find someone with the manual on them John! There is a correct procedure for dealing with them and it should be used. There are laws saying it is illegal to not have them. Shops have been fined a lot of money for removing them. They were pulling them and installing video screens in the steering wheel location.

Don't remove them, or obstruct them, any deflection could be deadly.

Yeah - find some sucker to loan you their manual.

Yes, I've decided to get them removed while I have the dash out of the car. If I'm strapped into a 5-point harness and the airbag has to come into play, then it's probably not enough. LOL
Hey Sucker, er, I mean Andrew, does the manual also show how to R/R the whole dash?

You could simply pull the fuses, unplug them and leave them in place.

U kidding? I'm too much of a lazy fatass to go upstairs to do anything else, and this is classified under "effort." I'd bet it does, though.

LOL! Ok, I'll call you tomorrow.
Cheers!
The passenger bag comes right out with a few obvious bolts. 1 or 2 on the side IIRC.

hey Zack,
Have you ever had the entire dash off the firewall? How about the steering column?
I think I'll be needing to do these steps too...

Have you actually done this? I've got the "obvious" two screws out under the front trim, but it refuses to budge.
Has *anyone* removed the passenger airbag? What is the trick?
Thanks in advance.

i believe there are also 2 bolts holding it in and can be removed from inside the glove box

Brian,
just a thought before you cage the interior... I was looking into modifying my MM for a land speed record attempt at El Mirage last year (NA under 5L)and ,working with the SCTA guru's, I found I could use a bolt in roadster style single person cage and still meet their specs. They allow the bolt in's... it would require welding in two braces under the chassis. I made a mock up of a cage that could be installed in the car and de-installed with a few hours work and got preliminary approval on it. I don't know if the NHRA spec could be met that way but it was a very safe & secure set up and would also not totally alter the interior of the car permanently. I know from previous threads that your car is heavily modified already but I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents...

I am John, not Brian (FordNut) and am planning a 12-point.
But feel free to start another thread on your plans. I am sure someone here will find it interesting.

I've been looking for a way to put a bolt-in bar in mine. I think I can do it, but need a spare rear seat to modify for the rear supports to go through the rear wheelwells and connect to the frame. NHRA rules require the bar to be attached to the frame in a full-frame car rather than the metal plates which can be used in a unibody car. Either bolted or welded to the frame is ok, though. I could always leave out the rear seat when the roll bar is in it, but I'd rather have it all!

Check and see, there may be 4 bolts holding the airbag in. 2 under the trim piece that has the clock in it and 2 accessed from underneath the dash when the glove box is removed or tilted all the way open.

Found the hidden two in the glove box. I unclipped it and it comes right out. Now I have to find the front of a deployed passenger side cover to put over the hole. I'm thinking my carpc my fit in there so I'll make a door out of it.
Anyone have a passenger side airbag cover?

I just so happen to have a passenger side air bag out of my MM. Only problem is that it's totally intack. I'll have to get it out of storage to see what can be done with it.

I have the same thing, Ed. I'm looking for one that has been "used" to see if the cover stays in one piece and can be remounted.
Thanks anyway.
