:mad2:Tonight on my way home from work I friggin hit a wire in the road! I don't know where it came from, whether it fell from a pole and landed on my car or if it was laying in the road! It happened so fast....... I was probably going 30-35MPH at the time. I pulled over to look at what the heck it was and the wire pryed itself behind my front license plate bracket and wrapped itself around my driver side exhaust tip!
I didn't get a good chance to access the damage but from what I could see my bumper cover is pretty F'dup! Their's scratches running from license plate bracket all the way over to the curve of the bumper just above the foglight. I'll get some pic's up tomorrow when it's light out.
Does anyone know if I can contact the town and get something done to take care of the damage or would I just be wasting my breathe?
Signed..... A very pissed off Sean

Was it a utility wire from a pole? -or- just a piece of wire laying in the road? If it is the latter you're probably going to have to claim it against your insurance.

you might be better off going to your insurance company

Sean, when was this? after we chatted?
Sometime the deparment of public works can take the fault...unfortunately either way you'll end up claiming on your insurance and paying the deductible.
Get some good pics of it...I know someone thats not too bad with plastic bumper repair.

I'm sure the local police/sheriff department could document the damage with some type of report.

Did you file a police report?
rayjay
03-11-2009, 09:28 PM
File a report with the police so there is a record of it. Do it tonight. Whomever the wire belongs to, telephone, cable, power company may be liable for your repairs. The 1st step is to document it with the PD and then contact the owner of said wire. Thats my advice as a command level LEO of 33yrs.

Anyone have any idea how I can find out who the wire belongs to? Oh, and there is more damage than I thought :mad2:The roof is sc***** up, the passenger side front door has a scuff mark on it and the top of the grille is has some suffs on it too!:mad2:

What does the wire look like, Sean? Is there a plastic covering on the wire? Is it bare wire with a twist to it? Take a look at any telephone pole that's supported by a guy wire. See if it's the same wire. In MA towns, poles are either owned by Verizon, Electric or both. Whoever owns them, maintains and replaces them. The DPW may be able to tell you who owns the poles. Write down the pole number for reference. Sometimes the utilities use a code indicating ownership on the pole.
Maybe go back to the same pole during daylight and see if you see anything else. Telco is the lowest attached on the pole, then cable tv, then municipal fire alarm, if there is such, then secondary electric. Primary is at the top. Also, look on the ground around the pole. Is there other debris such as fittings, shavings, scrap metal or wire? Take a picture.
All the attachees to the pole have insurance for property damage.

Good luck! I'll see you on the other side of this winter!!!

But, maybe now you can repaint it..... SOX colors!.....

+1 unless they claim the infamous "Act of God" excuse to get out of it. Certainly worth contacting them and filing a claim. I would also notify your insurance company. They can assist in getting the claim moving.

That has to be utility/county property and maintenance issues which make it their legal problem. That's a lot of scratches and scrapes. It might get you several thousand dollars worth of repairs that your insurance company will not have to pay for - by all means keep us posted!!

Wow Sean!
Def make an insurance claim...That front bumper looks gouged at the plate bracket? If it is, tell them you want an OEM replacement, and you want that cover back. I can repair it for you, then pass it along as a deal to someone else.
It looks like every spot that got hit has gone down too far to be repaired...It will need repainted. The roof doesn't look bad, althought to do it correctly, like i explained, is not cheap. The door edges will be blended. The rear bumper can be blended, the front bumper looks like it could warrant replacement, along with the grill, possibly that header panel. Didn't see if the hood took a wack?
If they're doing all that paint work I said above, you're looking at at least $1500+....make sure to contact your insurance company ASAP, and have an adjuster come out and look at it.

Update............ I contacted the eletric company, comcast and verizon.
They said they were sending out crews to see who the wire belongs to. I also contacted my insurance company and put in a claim....... An adjuster is coming to my house Tuesday morning.
I just washed the car and there is even more damage than shown in the pic's....... It's probably gonna be a total repaint!
I'm gonna go see my buddy tomorrow who own's a body shop and see what he say's.
I'll keep eveyone posted.

That damage is amazing for a wire! I think bigdogjim is right on the money with his bodywork guess. Around here, a good quality repaint will run about 3-4K with zero bodywork included in that price and that woudn't include that door ding or the front bumper repairs/replacement.
Just my $0.02, I'd avoid involving the insurance company just yet.
Everything they don't know about is better for you I think. I'd talk to the cable company and see what they have to say. From the pics of the pole that you posted and if they just left that wire out in the road, that's their negligence/incompetence/stupidity. They might just own up to it and settle with you.
A little story for ya: Some debris from a garbage truck i was following one time flew out one time and totaly destroyed the glass of an car I had once. I got the plate and unit number and drove to the company and told them what happened and they made good.... no insurance or lawyers involved. Maybe it might work out the same for you?
Crossing my fingers for you...hope it works out ok.

Well I'm glad to say that Comcast is taking full responsibility of the damage on my car....... I dropped the car off at the shop yesterday and hopefully it looks better than new when its finished:)
The bad part is I'm driving a Toyota Camry right now...... What a POS!! I guess I never really appreciated my MM until I drove that thing for a little while...... Its like the transmission doesn't know what it wants to do! When I slow down to take a turn it don't downshift and it stays in 3rd or 4th and you have to mash the gas to get it going again! It sucks!

Thats because its a car for bland boring people that only care about getting from point A to point B in the most inconspicuous way possible, not for people who want a drivers car.
