When I was departing Germany in November 1989, the Berlin Wall had just come down. East German "Trabis" were all over the autobahn packed with 5-6 folks headed to the west. Usually the guy in the middle front was holding a map. They had to stick to the right lane or even on the shoulder because they were so slow cruising flat out at about 50 KPH (31 MPH) on the autobahn is suicide.

I was last over there in 94, and Trabis weren't that frquently seen except in town. I drove a rented Opel Corsa at 160 kph, and was getting passed absolutely everything!
