Adam..... Might I make a small suggestion?? Do you think we could make the the polls public? I think it would be cool to see what people are thinking. Maybe we should start a poll about it:D

Gota wait for a faster F/stop camera, can't focus that fast now :burn:
What you need sir is a better understanding to master the skill of capturing movement. Virtually any camera with user settings options is capable of such captures and nothing (directly) to do with how fast it can focus.
The f-stop does indeed play a role for faster shutter speeds, but in the case of capturing "movement"...a slower shutter speed is desired.

NO WONDER ??? THANK YOU ! TIME FOR ME TO GET RID OF THAT KODAK "BROWNIE BOX" CAMERA WITH 110 FILM, AND THE CARDBOARD BOX I USE TO STEADY IT FOR PICS.

I came back to this site in most part to get involved with what this group has evolved into different subject matter.
I don't have much to offer any longer in regards to Marauder mods and racing and such, but do miss the freindships, conversations, gatherings, and off topic subjects such as this one.
When I saw this contest I was immediately interested and anxious to see the entries to follow. I personally have little to add as I do not take many pictures of my car in regards to the contest criteria.
I do however shoot quite a bit of other subjects that do meet the criteria, and have some offerings in regards to samples and advice.
This contest, "Marauders in Motion", should yield entries of actual motion.
Not still pictures of Marauders seemingly in motion at the time of capture, but efforts made by the photographer to actually show motion.
I would like to give some advice and information to better help some of you that have the compositional fortitude and basic equipment to capture motion.
1. Panning
Following a moving subject by pivoting the camera while the shutter is open captures the subject sharply while streaking the back ground.
Panning typically requires the shutter speed to be open 1/8th second or longer depending on the subject speed. Panning takes practice.
2. Track with zoom
Set your zoom wide enough to find your subject in the view finder.
Follow focus as with panning having your camera set to continuous (AF-C)focus.
Most DSLR's have auto focus setting modes of AF-A (auto select), AF-S (single servo for stationary objects), and AF-C (continuous servo).
Once you have found and locked on to your moving subject, manually zoom in on your subject to fill the frame as desired.
Yes, this not for cars, but works well on say birds or moving subjects far away from your position.
3. Bracket your exposures
Bracketing is not complicated, and your SLR and DSLR most likely have settings to do so. Read your manual.
Bracketing allows several exposures to be captured from one varying either the white balance, shutter speed, or f-stop of the original settings in incremental values set by the user. You may set the bracketed exposures up or down the scale +1 or -1 from the original value.
My D80 will bracket white balance setting automatically. In other words, if I snap a shot, it will automatically create two more without me hitting the shutter release again. The two new images are whatever I preset the camera to do such as add two more two step up from my original, two down, or even one over exposed and one under exposed. That way, I can choose later which of the bracketed images were best, and delete the others.
Bracketing exposure is like a backup leaving the user with two or more interpretations, each different, yet compelling in their own way.
Good luck!
And I can't wait to see "Maraders in Motion"!

Here is an example from an early days shoot I did with a low end Nikon.
Bear in mind, it was a dark stadium and I pushed the limits of my DSLR's ISO settings to allow the shutter speed I needed to capture this.
Pushing ISO's above the camera's ability results in 'noisy' (grainy) images.
In this case. ISO 1600 proved well beyond the limits of my D70.
My D80 is relatively noise free at 1600, and the new D3 is completely noise free at ISO 6400 WOW!!! Then again, that a $5000 full frame camera.
Panning motion, free hand, no tripod:

I agree with your comment about sticking around these Marauder sites. What more can we say about these car... lol!
The topic idea was mine. I like your professional approach to this. But to be honest, that is not what I had in mind. Photography is obviously a hobby and you certianly know your stuff. I think this is a bit over the top. Mind you, I would not want to exclude any "properly taken" pics, but I was thinking along the lines of the pics you see here in the thread already, at the track - see my sig, hwy cruising... etc.
Again, I like what your saying, but most of us probably dont have such pics already taken and ready for entry.

How do load an image so that it is full size and NOT a thumbnail?
Did I mention that I hate computers?

Although I can get Reba going about 90mph down my driveway with a little Photoshop help, I do not have any pics of her actually moving. I am her only driver, except for the rare times that I happily hand over the keys to my wife after she has indicated that I have exceeded my limits. :D

Go to photobucket.com, upload all your pics on there and use the URL they give you in this box.
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/images/bgold/editor/insertimage.gif
Make sure you resize it on photobucket before you paste the URL or else it will take up the whole screen and we will then b!tch and complain about your entry. :D
