Sorry to bother everyone, but does anyone know if the speedometer on a 92 Crown Vic is cable (mechanical) or electrical?

It's electronic. There is a pickup in the tailshaft of the tranny. The gear needs to be changed if you change the rear end gears.

Thanks for your help. It's my dad's CV ex police car. Dad said "I think it needs a new speedometer cable." I wasn't sure if it had one or not.

Sometimes the gears inside break on these. Good luck.

Sounds bad.

If it is these drive gears, can the problem be fixed with the transmission in the car?

If the gears were broken, it wouldn't be intermittent, would it? I'd think it would just stop working altogether.

If the gears are broken internally, then you will have no odometer but have a speedo.

DING DING DING DING (Light dawns)

Dad says odometer hasn't worked in a while.

Am I in for it? Can this be fixed with the trans in the car?

I hope the Marauder system is newer/better.

Thanks again.

It is a plastic gear that is easy to change.

It is a plastic gear that is easy to change.

If it's like a mustang, you need a reeeeeeaaaaally long extension, but it's not hard.

I learned to fix that in Dennis Reinhart's shop.

I bet Darrin at BC could help you.

If that is the case, you could find a newer cluster and swap motors with the gear intact and make it work again. I did this to both of my '95 CVPIs.

It's the speedo itself if the speedo works intermitent and the odo don't work at all. Just get another one from the yard and swap it in. 92 to 97 will work but it's got to be a police model. Pretty easy to swap but on a 92 all the plastic on the dash will be pretty brittle so be gentle.
