I did the same thing to my old '89 Taurus in response to some numb nut-idiot driver!
I punched the center steering wheel cover so hard that I bent the metal frame inside the cover and the horn got stuck 'ON'!
(It was not an airbag steering wheel)

I've always been a bit cautious about whacking things that have explosive devices inside them. It's the old "please don't shoot the nuclear warhead" syndrome. Having steering wheel and front passenger side airbags deploy once during a wreck is enough for me. :) They were scarier than the wreck itself.




Ya know, carmakers call them "airbags" so they sound friendly and nice. They should really be call KABANGs or BOOMers or maybe BLAMMs. The sound is something akin to firing a pretty large caliber handgun inside your car with the windows rolled up. You are a bit deaf for a few minutes and your ears ring for a couple hours. My front windows were down when they went off.

The covers alone come up every once in a while. Mercury Grand Marquis 03, 04, 05 covers are the same thing.

Hit your local scrap yards and get one cheap. Doesn't really matter what color it is because you can paint it dark dark dark gray yourself with upholstery/vinyl/leather paint.
