View Full Version : Stupid garages!

I don't mean garage as a place to take your car where some guy named "Bill" wrenches on it. I mean the place on your property where you park your car.
...or in my case where I will park my car when my house is done.
What I want to know is who is the genius who decided that 20'x20' would be "standard" for a 2-car garage??? 20' is only a useful depth if you drive a Civic. I mean really! Look at cars over the years. They've gotten bigger and bigger! Garages have gotten smaller and smaller.
I have only a couple of inches on either side of my wing mirrors.

I hope I don't come down on the nose with the garage door!

I'll be interested to see if I can unload groceries out of here.

What tricks do you guys use to shoe-horn your land yacht into your garage?

I have a three car garage and agree 100% with your comments. Back in the 70's it seems garages were built about 24 ft deep, now they are much shallower, mine is only 19.5 ft deep! To park my truck in the garage I have to tap the sheetrock with my front bumber and the door misses the back end by about 2 inches max. With my truck, two cars and Harley parked inside there isnt room enough for a lawn mower.
Mine barely fits (story of my life, BAM!), butt seriously... I have backed into stuff, figured I'll try straight in instead, smashed the front plate holder against the wall, it's a crap shoot. I am going to move stuff around this weekend and make more room. Amy swears her Civic will fit in there beside the Marauder. I said it may, but it's not going to, lol.

Are you have the house built? If so, it should be built to YOUR dimensions. If you are buying the house look for one with a bigger garage or have another larger garage built on the property.

Well, I am having it built. But it's still an off-the-shelf floor plan, and a deeper garage was not an option. I did get a 4ft bump off the side so I could have room for a workbench and some storage though, so that will help me alot.

When my dad hand built his house in the 80's he built it with an xtra deep garge on purpose... we have room for a work bench and a walkway & work area in front of cars...
26'deep by 24'wide
Its great...

You might be paying for a larger garage, say 25x25 on paper. If you need a board 2'' wide you get one 1 1/2" at the store.Yesterday I needed a 5' length of chain length fence to cover a space in the yard. Went to the store bought what said 5'x5', got home and it was 5'x4'.

Hey this is not an issue, with Change comes europe style "smaller" cars. Have you NOT been listening to the Prez!!!!!! Geeeeeeeez shape up! In fact I heard that HUD will start only giving loans on homes with garages 15'X10'.
You know this is for your good!

Ummmm, what?
In some ways he's correct
In others he isnt...
Look at the current F150 to the past 2 gens, the 2010 is MUCH bigger
Park your car next to a new challenger
On the other hand, we still have tin can jap cars like prius and civic... Which are the size of my trunk

Hell, I drew up and built my own garage and STILL wish I had made it a 30' wide instead of 24. and put a 2nd overhead in the lower workshop!
When I add to it.... I'll fix my errors!

I've got a 21' x 21' with upper and lower kitchen cabinets and counter top across the entire back wall and still fit in by just about a foot.

Look at the size of Civics over the years too!
1990 Civic LxWxH:
168.8x66.7x53.5
2009 Civic LxWxH:
177.3x69x56.5
I know it's not a huge difference, but it still proves the point.

Garages can turn into projects, my son's was a detached 24'X24'. one light bulb, two sockets for electric. Decided to make just a little larger, so he hung a 24'X20' extention on the back, wired it with sockets ever 4 feet on the walls and down the center ceiling. 220 on three walls, ran gas line, cable. separate line for internet, finished the walls and ceiling with wall board and trim. Built in cabnets accross the back and side walls. With all this he added heat, air, and of course Satellite as cable was not enough! With all this he's renting three storage places! Geezl

i just park mine in the front yard next to the toilet filled (thats perched up on used nascar tires) with flowers and on the other side a chicken coupe with turkeys in it!
just went to the zoning board for a variance, seems that no matter how big it is you never have enough, my shop is 22x60 now, and i'm trying to go bigger, but its not easy to convince them why you feel that you need "something that big"
