Kenwood and some other companies make a 6.5 - 8 inch sub, who thinks it would be possible for me to replace the stock with a new one? I havent taken the sub assembly apart cuz im retarded and cant get it past the 2 screws in the back.

If you replace the sub with an aftermarket be sure that the magnet is not much bigger than the factory . the design of the box will not allow the sub to line up with the screw holes in the box if the magnet is too big...

The reason why I wanted to replace my sub-woofer was because of a noticeable rattle in the speaker. I believe the voice coil was damaged. Anyway, I didn’t want to replace this defective driver with a factory part. So I thought I could find a 6.5 aftermarket sub-woofer that would give me acceptable sound. My selection was a Rockford Fosgate Punch 6.5 HE Woofer. The OEM is a five-ohm unit with a 3-inch circumference magnet. Making minor modifications to the existing box is needed. Because of the depth of the speaker a Dremel tool was used to cut the plastic cross that supports the magnet within the sub-box. This design is good for lower support of the speaker, but becomes restrictive when using any other replacement speaker. I believe the factory speaker depth is 3.126 inches. The Fosgate is 3.256 inches and cutting the lower magnet support is necessary. The next obstacle to overcome was the speaker placement. I had to move the placement of the speaker 2 1/10th of a inch to the left corner of the case. The Fosgate has a 5-inch magnet and weighs 24 oz. Factory screw points couldn’t be used, so I drilled new holes in the case, which was not a problem. Once compensating for the depth of the cage and the width of the magnet, the installation was complete. I used the factory amp to power the new speaker and after a few different CD’s and two days of testing I am pleased to say that this modification was well worth the time and money. I spent 79.00 for the subwoofer and 40.00 dollars for installation. If my Demel was working I would have saved the labor charge. The total time spent making the cuts to the factory box was less then 15 min.

PS: Kenwood doen't make a 6.5 inch subwoofer, it's a mid-bass driver and that's what I am not looking for. JL Audio also makes a 6.5 sub but it was not in stock to compare size and sound at the time of my installation.
