What is this tool called?

I found out to fix my slow windows on my truck I need to lube the wheels that move the window. To do that I must remove the interior door pannel. Last time I tried that I couldn't get it back on and I couldn't get it off.

What is the tool called and can I buy it from someone other than Snap On?

There is a special tool, available from FLAPS, or auto body supply. Go look at one at the FLAPS, and then make your own from a piece of banding strap.

A Trim Panel removal tool.
It is basically a stiff putty knife with a 'V' notch in the middle.
You place it under the trim panel where the plastic retainer clips hold the panel on.
Pry with the tool and the plastic retainer clips pop out....hopefully without damaging your trim panel.
Then you go to an auto parts store and but new plastic retainer clips because most of the original ones won't hold nearly as well when you pop them back in.

Depending on the year, some only have push in retainers on the bottom or the panel and maybe one or two screws, then the rest of the panel is held in by L shaped tabs. Once the retainers and screws are removed from the bottom, then the panel needs to be lifted straight up, not toward you. If you just pull you will break the L tabs that are part of the panel.... Ford trucks made that switch somewhere aroung 97 i wanna say..... I learned this the hard way. If your truck is older than that, then just follow all directional above and yank it off!

Hey Dom, do you have manual windows? If so there is a cheap special tool for the spring retainer on the windowcrank. But for the panel itself, just yank on it.

the tool for the window crank is called a rag :)

most of the time you can take a rag and just use the edge held tightly to slip behind the crank and push that clip out.


there's also a clip tool wrench from snap-on...it's a pair of pliers you can stick under the clip and squeeze. not cheap, but it's saved me a bunch of times. I also have the snap-on set of trim panel removal tools...well worth the $$. It was the first tool(s) I bought when working in a bodyshop.
