Probably should have started this thread prior to searching for parts.

The problem is: The car will not move in drive(driveshaft turns), jacked one side, wheel/axle turns and grinds and come to a harsh spot 3/4-1 whole revolution but doe continue to turn, all of this happend after a sudden stop of the axle(yeah the end of a burnout).

Also since January I have noticed that when ever backing up a hill or incline a shudder could be felt from the rear. Did not think it was the transmission, has a remaned Ford tranny had it checked out after first noticing the shudder. Thought no big deal maybe the clutches in the diff, but recently had noticed a light thumping sound coming from the rear(stock sized BFG's on the back), thinking it was the tires making the noise.

In my experience it sound like and feels like a broken axle. Wanted to get others opinions on this. Will start tearing it down tonight or early in the A.M. Also was thinking maybe the spider gears stripped/broke(real common in large trucks).

Also need common Part Numbers for part that everybody uses to rebuild the rear end. Possibly thinking about going 31 spline and maybe 4:10 gears. Dont want this thread to turn into a everybody trying to pursuade me into going with the 4:10's though.

My mods are light: K&N, Intake spacer, Granatelli coil connectors, And a Zack tune.

Its an Axle. Took way to long to get it out, practically exploded right in the center of the splines.

Just curious as to whats all inlcuded in the axle kit from ford???

My rear end started whining and making strange grinding noises too. Reinhart had a complete barely used rear end built with 31 spline axles and I went with the 4:10 gears that came with it. Not trying to talk you into it but I think its a good upgrade and my mileage hasn't suffered at all on the long road trips... I also wanted to make it bullet proof from the rear end forward so I could get on it whenever the mood hit so I went with the Dynotech driveshaft and the Metco loop at the same time...

If yours is an 03, check on Ford recall number 04S16 (NHTSA campaign ID number is 04V328000). This is for premature rear wheel bearing and axle failure. Not sure if it applies to MMs, but sounds like it should since it lists CVs, GMs, and Town Cars.
Looks like the kit has axles and bearings and should run around $330.

The reason that I am not wanting to do the 4:10's is not due to fuel mileage. All the vehicles that i own and drive have V8's and get subpar fuel mileage, I could car less how many MPG's I get.

It's due to traction in the winter time. As I do have a 4x4, the Marauder is not a Daily winter driver, but sometime :censor: happens and cars break. When I first got the Marauder it was in January and did great with snow tires on it (08'), and was actually thinking about 4:10's up until this last winter, when the finances were not available to buy snows again, And with the stock sized BFG's i was really afraid to drive in snow with it.
As it been said alot BFG'S SUCK and I wont be buying them again.

Mine is an 04 does the kit work for both years?

Another thing about the 4:10's, in my area shops want $1000 plus parts to install them. :censor: that noise.
If I had a pinion Depth guage at my disposal it would be a little more likely that I would do them, but by my self.

I'm no expert, but I'd be shocked if the 03 and 04 rear ends aren't the same. I've never heard of any changes between the two years. I think the 8.8" rear end has been pretty unchanged for several years, now (other than different gear sets on different vehicles).
$1000 for gears sounds way high to me. Maybe if you went to Salt Lake or Denver, you might be able to get a better deal, but I guess that would be hard to do with abroken axle. For that much money, you could just buy the guage (assuming none of the parts stores there will loan/rent you one) and do it yourself.

As for the 4.10s, don't forget - you can put it in 2nd gear to get it moving in snow. I have 4.10s (and s/c) and running less than great snow tires, haven't even had to use 2nd, but with my old CV several years ago, 2nd was the only way to get it moving on ice in a big ice storm.

Hope to have everything back together tomorrow evening.
Been a long time(almost a month) without driving the Marauder.

I have a used rear differential that needs clutches and the pinion shaft. PM me if interested.

BUMP this thread.

I have a leak from the passenger side rear axle and a consistant "thump, thump" noise coming from the rear when driving, Im sure the dreaded premature axle wear has finally happened.

I figured Id put the 4.10s in there while Im taking the rear end apart. I can find everything except the axle kit. Can I just call up a ford dealer and give them the part number for it? Or is there somewhere online I can order it from?

Rock auto has great prices, and excellent service. I am in the process of replacing mine with 31 spline axles from them, and a (31 spline) differential from my local Ford dealer.

My LR axle was leaking grease since last winter, and when I pulled it, the bearing surface was pitted. No noise for a warning.

I just called my local Ford dealer and they want $417 for the rear axle kit. Wouldnt it be cheaper to go with 31 spline axles and a 31 spline 03 Cobra diff unit?? What 31 spline axles are you guys using??

Called the local dealers service rep and gave him my VIN and the recall numbers and he said
it applies only to the police interceptors cv. Nothing on the 03 MM. I'll have some other
dealers check for me also.

Thanks for all the help guys, I got everything ordered, just waiting on them to come in.

Does $350 sound good for the labor? This includes complete disassembly of rear end, installation of new axles, 4.10s, rebuild Trac Loc, and install all seals, bearings, etc, etc.

Sounds pretty good. I paid $280 cash (under the table) so that's pretty close I figure. If you can get an Alcoa MMC driveshaft from a 99 CVPI or upgraded metal matrix DS from Reinhart.

Did you ever get an answer from the Ford dealers? Had my axles and bearing replaced about a year ago.

I would buy OE and not Dorman. Dorman stuff is going to be foreign made and I would not trust it over OE.

Dorman, since 1918, has quality replacement parts and hardware. I don't hesitate to use them.
