No choice on that, unfortunately it's the dmv and they can't do anything right. There shouldn't be any space. I contimplated using a little red paint to extend the I.

My friend wanted COBRAR on his R, and it came back COBR AR.
Stupid registry...
That's why I went with just a three character plate.. OOR
Was anything like ZZZ or ZZZZ or MYZ350 available ?

Technically there is not a space there. The area for each letter is equal. It doesn't look right because the "I" is so skinny. The P and the T are wider at the top and very narrow at the bottom, which adds to the look of space. Optical illusion.
I got it right away. ;)

Again, an optical illusion. To the left of the A, there appears to be more space because of the indent in the R. To the right of the A, the solid line on the left of the R appears to be closer. It isn't.
In typography, graphic designers compensate for even letter spacing by kerning.

30 years?! Was that even an occupation 30 years ago? How did the advent of computers change the course of graphic design, like night and day as far as the possibilities?

Typesetting machines replaced typesetting by hand. Never did it by hand, letter by letter. The typesetting machines were proprietary and only did one function. Fonts disks were loaded in and you could change the size of the font. The paper had to be developed, just like a photograph. Then you had to wax the finished paper and stick it to the page. Computers and desktop publishing really changed that business. I worked at both weeklies and a daily newspaper doing this.

I've gotten lots of smiles and compliments on the plates.
I ordered them (technically) to be transfered when my truck is registered, because that is indeed, a money pit. when that happens, the Z will get something more personalized.
