Mine probably has to be Never Let You Go by The Five Discs. I was shocked to find out the group wasn't Black, they were all Italians. Earth Angel is a good one too, but everyone knows that. Still of The Night and the fast version of Unchained Melody.

I doubt I will get many responses, but to those who know this music post up. I'm getting all the 45s I can.

Here is one of my favorites, but you must to get to at least 1:10.

Enjoy!

Great list, Charlie.

One of my all-time favorites is "I Wonder Why" by Dion and the Belmonts.

Dr. Bop and the Headliners out of Madison used to do a great rendition of it.

I recently found out something sad about The Drifters. They had a lot of lineup changes, but in 1959 the record label fired everyone and kept the name. So There Goes My Baby contains NO ORIGINAL members at all in the band. The only thing orignal is the name.

Danny and The Junors had quite a few Doo Wop songs, but Rock N' Roll is Here To Stay is a Rock N' Roll anthem, not a Doo Wop song... to me.

Good list Charlie!

That Jukebox was cool, it actually had Link Wray. Now where is Hasil Adkins? :D

Jim you seem to have a lotta Pop songs with Doo Wop songs, but still you have a lotta Doo Wop. I think I have most of those on vinyl.

Why not ad Born Too Late by The Pony Tails?

Oh wait that's my song....... :o

Bobby's Girl is awesome. Love that twangy guitar. mmmmm

As one who grew up and lived through this era, it is not very easy to sort many songs into a given category. In fact, some of the categories didn't even exist initially until much later. The transition from Rock & Roll to R&B to Pop to Surfer music to Soul to Acid Rock, etc was not all that clear "while it was happening" in real time.

There were quite a few songs that cut across several categories especially during the transition periods. Even today, some songs defy being put in a single classification. For instance, "Unchained Melody" appears on the list of Doo Wop songs. However, I have always personally considered it to be Rhythm & Blues (R&B). JMHO. :D

There is a Doo Wop version of Unclained Melody just like there is a Punk version of 500 Miles.

To me it's easy to know what songs go into what, usually by artist.

Dick Dale = Surf
Chuck Berry = Rock N' Roll
Gene Vincent = Rockabilly
Marcles = Doo Wop
Miracles = R&B

I see what you mean though.

If I had to pick one song over all the other great doo-wops, it would be I Only Have Eyes For You by the Flamingos. I never, never get tired of listening to that tune.

If I had to choose the best male voice of the rock and roll era, I'd have a tough time choosing between Roy Orbison and Jackie Wilson.

If you listen to Roy sing "Crying" and Jackie Wilson singing "Danny Boy", wow!

Roy had more hits, but the range and strength of Jackie Wilson's voice.....He could do a R&R song and then turn around and sing opera.

Tough choice

The best female voice of the R&R era, IMHO, goes to Connie Francis. From "Lipstick on Your Collar" to "Where the Boys Are", she could do it all.

Etta James has my vote to best female singer ever. :)
