I just bought a PI Stallion 3500 Stall torque converter from TooManyFords (John).
Unfortunately, my car does not have the power to make this converter work in the range that it's supposed to.
I either have to make more horsepower, or get another converter. As much as i'd like to go with the first option, my bank account will not support that route.
I'm looking for anyone who wants to trade their upgraded converter, straight up, for this converter.
I would like a 2800-3000 stall converter.
Hopefully, this situation would be good for some of you guys who have a upgraded converter, and want to go to the next level, but don't want to buy another converter.
It's a shame, because i just drove my Marauder today for the first time since December 2007. And it needs a lower stall converter. But, if i've already gone this far, i might as well do it right.
Please consider my offer and thanks for reading.

It won't work?
So that means your engine will not rev past 3500RPM?

3500 stall doesn't mean you have to rev up to 3500 before it moves. Duh!
Tell us why it doesn't work. You need a new tune to make your PCM work better with the new hardware that's all.

Normally, the logic is the less power you have the higher stall you want to put in. If you don't think you'll be putting in a supercharger anytime in the near future. You should definitely be putting in the 3500 stall to help you launch off the line. You'll actually feel a bigger hit with it than puting in 4.10 gears.

its seems way slower than stock. i was planning on 4.10s and a tune shortly.
and it does work, it just feels like a clutch slipping on a manual-type car.
but at 3500, its a rocket. i cruise down the street at 30mph at 3600 rpm. i don't think it should be doing that.
would the tune be atleast the better fix right now?
thanks guys.

Get in touch with Zack. I have a 3500 PI in mine and its pretty much stock. I hated it till I got the tune in it. Promise, you get the right tune in it and you will love it. Get the 4.10s in it next and enjoy.

And If you need it I have an unlocked SCT3 tuner that you might be interested. It already has a Zack 91 octane 3:55 tune in it. Rick

If you're running stock tune, something isn't right.
Your lock-up clutch should be engaged by 30mph at least in 3rd gear and you should not be at 3600 rpm at only 30mph.
Try turning the O/D off and cruise about 40mph. If you're turning more than 2000 rpm. Your converter lock-up clutch isn't engaging.

These guys are right. These engines need more stall and not less. Particularly when running stock.
I agree that something isn't right.
Remember that the stock converter that came out of your car could stall up to almost 2800rpm. Why spend the money to have an almost stock stall aftermarket converter when the factory converter has a better lockup clutch than the PI does. There would literally be a loss of performance (durability) with the same as stock stall.

I suggest checking the fluid levels and getting a tuneup. That converter and tranny worked great when I pulled it and it should be perfect for a stock engine.

I haven't run an aftermarket converter in these cars but I have in other V8 RWD cars and the higher stall converters will feel a little "soft" at lower rpms but when you wail on it you should take off like a rocket

Ryan, does your car have a custom tune in it that would keep the converter unlocked? If not, I bet that has something to do with it.
Some PI converters work great and others do not.
Thats all Im sayin'

I'll take it out for a spin today and try the driving with the OD off.
John, i will check the fluid again. I am paranoid about the fluid level as it is. :-)
Rick, about that tune; yes, i am interested. And i will have to talk to Zack about having it changed to meet my needs. I really dont want to change the converter, and if you guys say that this issue can be resolved without removal, then i'm all for it.
There's a reason everyone turns to you guys ( Zack, Darrin, etc.) for info.
Let's make this happen!
Thanks,
-Ryan S.
The tune will not make the converter stall properly.
Ive driven many a PI converter and like I said.. some will stall properly, others will seem like you didnt even put a converter in at all.

OK, so,
I let the car sit for 2 days. I took it out last night and it was great! everything worked the way it should, and life was good. Until about 10 minutes later, then the "slipping" and such started.
I did drive it at 40 mph with the OD off and it was under 2000rpm.
After the problem came back, it did the same test, 40 mph with OD off; 3400rpm.
I know the fluid level Isn't correct. I've been battling that for a few days now. Its a pain to get it perfect, especially with the deep pan. But I'm sure that when i get the level correct, it will be fine.
And then i need a tune.

With the car running in park, fill to the marks on the dipstick. No magic, but I suspected it was low.

Whatever you do, do NOT drive it will low fluid again. Don't want you to waste that tranny!

I've been doing that. It just seems like the level is changing. Poo.

As long as you don't see a puddle under the car (and you shouldn't), keep adding till it stays in the hash marks. It is probably sucking it up as you add it and filling the converter still.

Did you add fluid to the TC when you installed it into the trans?

not alot. it wouldnt take much.
and would too much fluid cause the same problem?

It sounds like the TC might be sucking up your fluid. I seem to recall my PI TC 3500 took a whole quart....

It sounds like that when you're slipping, you're losing 3rd gear.
It is waaayyy excessive to have a converter slipping that bad that you're only doing 40mph at 3400 rpm.
Your trans filter/screen may be clogging up after the 10 minute drive and the trans direct clutch is disengaging or slipping.
Next time that it slips again. With O/D off, take off from dead stop and try manually shifting from 1st to 2nd to 3rd and try to feel and confirm your 1-2 and 2-3 shifts.
MAKE SURE THAT YOUR TRANS FLUID LEVEL IS AT THE PROPER LEVEL BEFORE DRIVING!
You will do irreversible damage to the trans with continued driving with low fluid level!
It should not take you days to get the fluid level correct. One hour tops and that's with a 30 minute break. :)

I'm definately going to get this solved tonight. hands down.

yeah, it's just a slow process of checking the fluids CORRECTLY.
I think i was challenged yesterday.
Yesterday, it was about 1/2" above the crosshatches. Today, it was just below the crosshatches. So, all i have to do it buy some more fluid and try again tomorrow!

When filling a tranny, the procedure I use is to have the car sitting in Park running. Slowly fill to the top of the hash marks on the dipstick. Sit in the car with the brakes firmly on and then slowly go through all the gears, pausing in each gear. Check the fluid level, adjust and then repeat.
Then take the car around the block a couple times going through the gears manually, driving slowly. Park, running and repeat the first procedure.
When you can do these steps and the fluid remains topped off, you should be good to go. Go out and romp on it a little and drive for a day or two and then check the level again. (always be on the safe side)
Enjoy your new converter and trans!
