View Full Version : "LOW FUEL" = How much gas left?

It is getting scary how I can tell how much fuel the Marauder is going to swallow.
The fuel lamp came on as I was reaching to turn off the ignition key, I was about to fill 'er up with some 93 Phillips.
The car took 17.3 gallons topped off.
If we have a 19 gallon tank, that leaves only a couple gallons (not even)for reserve.

Mine turns on and then normally take 16 gallons of fuel.

This same topic came up a few months ago, and in the end we all seemed to have a different answer, some of this can be attributed to how full we fill our cars, stop at the first click from the fastest flow, to pump till it nearly overflows. Mine takes right at 17 gallons, I have put 19.3 gallons in.

...or on the angle of the place you park where you fill up.

I never let mine get much below 1/2 tank since the fuel pump is cooled by being immersed in gasoline!!:shake:

My light on time has change twice since I got it.
Funny... both times were after I swapped fuel pumps.....

I have put 19.3 gallons in.
I ran out of gas in the middle of Vermont the other day
I put 19.2 in after pushing for 1.13 miles to the NY state line and first open gas station in 245 miles :bigcry:
got my exercise though i guess

My foot is kinda heavy so at 1/4 tank I look for a fillup. ;-)

On my MGM, I have about 2 gallons left when the Low Fuel lamp comes on.
So far, I take care that it does not happen on my MM.

Running until the LOW FUEL light comes on is an EXCELLENT way to decrease the longevity of your fuel pump. http://www.geocities.com/gdmjoe/nonono.gif
gasoline cools the fuel pump.
sucking the bottom of the tank tends to increase the likelihood of putting sediment into the fuel line.
increased sediment plugs the fuel filter sooner.
plugged fuel filter causes strain on the fuel pump to maintain pressure.
increased strain on the fuel pump causes it to heat-up more.
LOW FUEL level causes the fuel pump to heat-up even more.

Most of our cars are designed to go about 50 miles once the light comes on. Of course there are many variables.

never had it come on. I consider 1/4 tank low fuel.

Well it happened again, low fuel lamp came on a block from the refueling station.
Took the usual 17.XX gal.
For the record; I only get custody on the weekends, when it needs gas :flamer:
82K on "all" the equipment, 50K+ on the reman longblock:banana:

According to the Interociter, you will get exactly 34.66 miles when your guage hits E.

when my light comes on i say the needle can go jus under the red line. but all together i go like 33 miles with the light on. never really wanted to go pass that.

I routinely let mine come on when travelling. Maybe not the best idea, but no problems yet. Anyway, on the highway, when the light comes on, I usually go another 40ish miles. Last time I did this was this past Saturday. Light came on in Martinsville WV, and I went to Winchester VA before fueling, about 40 miles. The car took IIRC 17.1 gallons to fill. I always fill it till I can see gas just over that little flap in the neck, and it stays (doesn't drain down any more).

One of those variables is the gears. I thought I had more miles to go, but sputtered a little earlier than normal (When I had 3.55 gears in). Fortunately, I ran out of gas right in front of the gas station, had an employee bring me gas!

I think there is a TSB for early builds having problems with the gas gauge. Would this have anything to do with the low fuel lamp? If so, maybe this is the reason for the differences.

i never seen my gas light come on... I never let it go under half a tank i dont know why.

I'm guilty of seeing it on a few times; about 17.5 is what I usually squeeze in afterwards...IF your gas has any Ethanol in it or more of course your mileage is about 20% LESS; plus all the other normal variables already mentioned --

I've known this too about it being BAD for your Fuel Pump etc. etc. to let it get that low in the tank and I try my best to subscribe by it; BUT do we really need to keep it at no less than HALF a tank?! I thought about a 1/4 of a tank or even an 1/8th would be good??? (I have several Panthers so I'm concerned I may be buying several new fuel pumps at once if I'm doing this about once a quarter or so...)

I believe the TSB fix is for a check engine light if the pcm never sees below 1/4 tank. There is a reflash to prevent this from happening but it does not affect the indicator or the light.

There is a TSB for some of the 2003s for the guage not staying full enough. I had this done because the needle would go below full after filing up in just 15 miles.

I you serious? I hate pushing the car in the garage a couple of inches when her nose is sticking out across the electric eye. You pushed your 2 ton Marauder how far?
