View Full Version : What is a Sleeper to you?

I could go on for hours on this subject so I will do my best to make it brief. My definition of a sleeper is a car you had no clue was quick, looks very unsuspecting or above all rare.

The car must also be quiet and appear to be stock. Usually tires and a roll bar are a dead give away that the car is packin' heat. Other ways to tell are by the stance.

To me there is no such thing as a factory sleeper IF you know your cars. SRT8 Jeeps can be sleepers to the average person, while people like you and me know it'll give us a run for our money if the guy has a dime into aftermarket parts.

A sleeper must not look fast either. To me no Mustang or Camaro is a sleeper unless it's running quicker than 10s and is on the street/in street form. We all know the potential Pony Cars have so if they are quick it should come as no surprize. The only real vehicles that are sleepers to me (or unsuspecting) are Diesel Trucks. They seem to sound the same to me if they are factory or modified. The only thing that can give it away is the smoke stack(s) and even then you don't know what you are racing until they get moving.

I was once told anything that runs 13s or faster is a sleeper, this I do not agree with. There is no time you must meet to be a "sleeper" it's all about appearance. When my K5 was pushing mid 15s a lot of people considered it a sleeper because no K5 was going that fast or at least none were known to do that. I have seen footage of a 14 second Semi truck... who would have thought? Finally on DVD I have a Supra running 9.001 and killing a Motorcycle and the Supra looked completely stock.

Those are sleepers. The worse they look the cooler it is.

What is your definition? Do you have any videos or pictures to share?

Post em up!

I was cruising through the park in Worcester at the biggest car show in the North East... "The Summer Nationals" and some dude goes "Oh man! Those are sleepers right there! Marauder!"

I also got many people asking if it is for sale...

That's a blockbuster not a sleeper. Unless your second wife finds one you and your first wife made, then it's a tragedy. Cause she burns it in the driveway while you are at work, and tells you she's throwing all your stuff out on the front lawn and locking you out of your house.

That was around 1995/96. I was working evenings at the time, off at 10p.m. each night. Freezing cold, car wouldn't start, called wifey
"can you come pick me up?"
"No, I'm too busy watching a tape of you and your first wife :censor: each other."
.......awkward silence......
"Are you sure it's me?"

She learned gasoline burns hotter and faster than charcoal lighter fluid when you want to set a pile of stuff on fire. I'd like to think we both learned something that night, though. I don't know what exactly, but I'd like to think so.

A Dark horse, which is what a Marauder is. Looks like a taxi or a cop car. Goes fast.

The Wheels and stance and the lovely engine tone give it away somewhat but it is sleeperish.

A true sleeper would sound like a taxi, look like a taxi and have taxi wheels, and even though you have been mistaken for a taxi, you are close but not quite a sleeper.

The 200 year old VW Bug and the best part is it starts.

The Nova's a good example. Also, a local, here, has a Fairlane Futura with a 460 stuffed into it. Slightly tubbed (I think) to accommodate the tires; but unless you're looking, the thing goes un-noticed, no hood scoop or pipes showing. Nice paint, and always clean, and like I said, it just looks like a kid with a nice, well kept car. :burnout:

"these things were great", he says, as he's blowing a ton of dust from it. The best part, though, was the orgasmatron.......:D

IMHO, a 'Sleeper' is simply a nice, clean, but not-flashy vehicle that drives much faster and/or handles much better than its general looks (or sound) suggest to the average onlooker.

A quiet single exhaust V8 Chevette + nitrous, narrowed 9 inch, 14" tires w/hubcaps, tubechassis, in sky blue would be my fun car. I've seen a few V8 conversion examples up close and when done right they can look stock!

Buick Regal GS sported a 240 HP supercharged engine (L67). The Buick Regal GS had a 1/4 mile ET of just less than 15 seconds, change the pully and add performance exhaust you're easily looking at low 14's or high 13's

Back in the early 70's a buddy and me stopped at a local Dodge dealer that had a bunch of Chargers and Challengers for sale. I had my eye on a loaded black on black Challenger SE. in the mean time, my buddy is looking at a plain jane orange Challenger with Wide Ovals on black rims and dog dish hubcaps, no markings, bare bones interior but it did have a pistol grip 4 speed and dual exhaust.

About that time, a sales guy came out, said something about the "orange one catching our eye," and proceeded to pop the hood...Long story short, apparently it was a Dodge corp. exec. car they'd picked up at model turnover, the car was ordered with base level trim but had a Hemi in it. Got a ride in that car that I'll never forget.:burn:------->:drive:

THAT is my lasting image of a sleeper.

Twin Rotrex superchargers. Here's the complete build. Once you read this and look at what they did, you really appreciate the car. Granted, it's a "Pro" built car, but it's the perfect sleeper.

My first Mercury. It started its life as a 91 Mercury Cougar Bostonian Edition V6. It was a my 1st car and I was in love. White Vinyl roof, gold trim, luggage rack, w/a gray interior, and stock wheels.
Rode in my buddies Mustang after he did a couple mods and I was hooked on making things faster.
Dropped in a stock used 5.0 short block, some used gt40 heads, E303 cam, Explorer intake, 1.6 roller rockers, 65mm throttle body, 90mm mass air, 24lb injectors, all the basic mustang N/A bolt ons. JBA shorty headers, and custom exhaust all the way back. Put in my friends police interceptor aod, w/shift kit, and a performance rebuild.
Would take you off the line real quick, but topped out at 110. Still left many people looking at me like whats that grandma car doing.
