4.10 gears just arrived and installing them is beyond my level of competence. Local L/M dealer wants $650 to install 'em. A local shop with a good reputation that does nothing but rearend work wants the same amount but that includes new bearings, seals, etc., which they say they need to do to warrant their work for their normal two year period. Those who know, are these prices in the ballpark?

This is a real no brainer install. Any good Mustang shop can do the swap. I paid two bills for mine a a custom spped shop, which included the fluid. Check with your local Mustang Clubs, they shoul dbe able to steer you to a reasonable shop. Of course with Arnold coming in as Gov., they might want to get as much as they can! The L/M dealer price is about ball park for a dealer!

That's dumb. $650. Yeesh. $200-300 max from local speed shops is the going rate.
Not to mention they'll do a better job setting them up than your average grease monkey at a dealership...

I also ordered the 4.10 gears. Thanks for the heads up on the cost of the installation.

Also does anyone know if changing the gears void the warranty?

ANYTHING you do to this car will void the warranty...if the dealer finds it...
If your fuel pump goes bad, it's unlikely they'll take the rear end apart, but if you have any rear end or driveshaft issues, and they find the gears...as the Capital One commercial says: "What's in YOUR wallet?"

How do you like the 4.10 gears? Is the reward worth the risk?

ggalske... I wouldn't worry about it. Gear modification is a pretty safe mod. It's been a LONG time since I've seen a rear end blow up.
Biggest thing is after the swap, if your gears are making any noise, take it back immediately to get redone. 8.8's are fairly straight forward to setup though and most shop's don't have a problem doing it.
The reward is DEFINATELY, ABSOLUTELY worth it. Just do it. Logan said so. :D

Thanks for the help. I'll let you know how things turn out.
So far I install the dead petal, tinted windows, valintine1 R.D. and remote starter. Looking forward to better performance.

I beleive gear change equals chip or reflash to address the shift points.

sailsmen makes a good point, you need to either reflash your PCM as well or get a Reinhart chip to accomodate for the gear change so your speedo and shift points are set properly taking the new gear ratio into account.
