Bob Lutz is back, and after what seems like five minutes into his job as GM's new marketing kingpin, he's doing what he does best: making headlines. Rest assured that this is a good thing, as El Generalissimo Roberto Maximo told Automobile Magazine (http://www.automobilemag.com/features/news/bob_lutz_pontiac_g8_chevrolet_ caprice/index.html) that yes, the Pontiac G8 will live on in the United States as the Chevy Caprice. So much for Fritz "I'm not a fan of rebadging" Henderson's statement to the contrary a couple of weeks ago.

"The last time we looked at [the G8], we decided that we would continue to import it as a Chevrolet. It is kind of too good to waste," Lutz told the mag. As for the G8 being "too good to waste": Amen to that, Bob. This also makes us wonder if law enforcement-grade models will be part of the deal with Holden to continue production. Chevy Caprice police cars? That's got a very familiar ring to it. The next question is whether a U.S. Caprice would mimic the Middle East-market Caprice, which is based on the long-wheelbase Holden Caprice/Statesman, or whether it will simply be a Chevy-badged version of the standard-wheelbase Holden Commodore/Pontiac G8/Chevrolet Lumina (http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-chevy-lumina-ss-middle-east/530522/). Frankly, as long as there's ultimately a Caprice SS that is identical to the Pontiac G8 GXP in every critical way, we don't care.

In his conversation with Automobile, Lutz also essentially confirms that next year's Cadillac CTS coupe will be joined by a V-series variant, saying that the CTS-V coupe was the car that had most of the Presidential Task Force members' tongues wagging during the product-pipeline tour they were given by GM. Lutz even hints that a CTS-V wagon is not completely out of the question. (We'll take the wagon in brown, with the stick, Bob.)

On the bad news side, in a separate blog post (http://blogs.automobilemag.com/6558678/car-news/bob-lutz-hints-camaro-z28-is-dead-again/index.html), Automobile reports that Lutz kind of throws dirt on the idea of an LSA-powered Camaro Z28 (though he doesn't specifically state that the program's toast). He says that for "mainstream" sports models like the Camaro, powerful sixes (like the one in the Camaro LS and LT) and turbo fours (like the one used in the now-dead Cobalt SS, HHR SS and Solstice GXP) are more indicitive of the automaker's future direction in that regard. Hmmm. Well then, how about bolting a blower to the direct-injected V6?

Welcome back, Bob. This sounds like it could get pretty fun.

Great news, indeed. Depending on how they package it, an SS version (ie. G8 GXP) might tempt me away from a Camaro SS.

I'll tell you, I've been thinking awfully hard about getting into a G8 recently. Everything you see and read indicates this car is great, and everybody who owns one keeps saying it's the best thing Pontiac has put out in decades!

With the Pontiac brand bowing out, GM simply HAD to re-brand this hot car to get its money's worth out of the US-market conversion of the Holden. This may just be THE major turning point for the new-born GM.

I honestly think they should have brought in the long wheelbased version. It would make the perfect replacement for the aged Buick Lucerne and Cadillac DTS.

V8 RWD new Park Ave...yes please I'll take one of those....

That would cool, Id take one too.

But I think buick has regeared toward the elderly trying to keep the old folks happy with cars like the Lecern, which in my opinion is as bland, and cheap (material wise) as they have ever been.

I don't think the DTS is going anywhere soon. It is a solid and well selling platform. I look for the STS to go bye-bye as the new CTS is so close in size and comfort. I like the G8 but, I think using the Caprice name is not the best idea. Caprice says "old fart" to most people.

A smart move by Lutz, a true car guy. I agree the long wheelbase version would be nice as a true Caprice/Electra/whatever and the GT and GXP are fantastic cars right now. Basically the same platform as the Camaro with four doors. I disagree with the above about the name Caprice, I think its a great name for a car (as opposed to G8, GXP, CTS, CRV, M5, blah blah blah).

Great news for sure!

While the G8 is a great performer, many (myself included), this it looks like a$$. I hate its lines and over the top bulges. Chevy versions of anything available by Pontiac are much more subtle. That's why I think many of us like the Marauder so much. It's tough looking, without going over the top.

Cannot wait for a new bada$$ Caprice.

Good news that GM is keeping that platform in the US.

The picture of the Chevy Caprice version is disappointing....

While the G8 looks badazz.....but the Caprice looks like another bland Chevy rental car....:puke:

I have to agree with the previously posted thought that the 'Caprice' name implies 'blue hairs and old retirees.
Why not make it a new Impala SS???

I wouldn't want an Australian car labeled as a Chevy.

If it looks like the G8 I am still not interested.

Panthers are the last of the full size, RWD, V8, American sedans.

NOTE: I just saw the pic. It's ugly and I am not interested no matter what it runs down the 1320.

If that happens thats gonna be awesome...

And the Z28 has been dead before they even produced the 2010!

I like my pontiacs as pontiacs. This is news of a piece of crap. This reminds me of when people putting chevy engines in pontiacs.

Impala is OK but Caprice reminds me of LTD...remember those boats?
At least they had big block torquey engines in there...

General Motors should take the PONTIAC VIBE (is that the little Saturn two seater also?) and make it into a BUICK SPORTS ROADSTER...maybe the next REATTA!!!

Can I get paid for this idea?
Now now...I already posted it...

But this is a good enough idea to tell GM about

I think "Caprice" will go over big with the gay community, maybe even more so than the Camaro.

Real Indians don't wear bowties!!!!

Now that Government Motors has cancelled the Pontiac line; someone ought to buy the name and go independent.
