View Full Version : A Thankless Job.....

As many of you know, there is a partnership of six owners of this website. With my prior knowledge and moderation duties with the website, I usually take a public lead role, including posting News threads, running raffles and event registration. I am also responsible for financial operations and much of the back-end website management. I respond to dozens of emails from Members on a weekly basis. I have never turned anyone away from getting the help they've asked for. While I may be very visible, decisions are not made solely by me.
It is unfortunate that I have taken the brunt of abuse for taking charge and taking action. From the beginning, I have always said any reaction by moderators or administrators is directly related to an action first taken by a Member. I/We have been accused of being too lenient, too harsh, protecting/not protecting Vendors/Members and playing favorites. Maybe I'm looked at differently because I'm a woman with a passion for a predominately male hobby. It has been important to me to keep my emotions out of decisions that need to be made and keep a professional, business demeanor. The reverse seems to true for some that feel the need to unfairly attack me and the other owners.
Anyone that has been here for a while knows a couple of things about Zack: He knows his stuff, and that has never been denied. He also knows how to push people's buttons or grab on like a rabid dog and not let go. Zack has taken on 3 Supporting Vendors over the years in a very unprofessional manner which has caused a lot of disruption and dissension. Each time Zack acted out, we had to struggle with how to handle him. Sometimes he got a vacation.... only to return and eventually cause trouble again.
We finally reached our limit. I've had some thank me for showing Zack the door; I've heard from some very strong supporters of Zack too.
While I do not feel we need to provide an explanation to the Membership for every action we take, Zack has proven that we made the right decision. Besides the CraigsList "Rant", Zack has felt the need to demand reinstatement or the co-owners should not drive their cars to MV7 and that it will get worse if we don't heed his advice. I'm not a proponent of sharing email content, but I felt this should be an exception. Making veiled threats will not be tolerated.
The next day Zack emailed and said he didn't mean anything he wrote and got caught up in being separated from his friends for no valid reason. But the damage has been done. He previously said an apology from us wasn't necessary if we let him back in. It's sad to see Zack resort to such manipulative tactics. Arrogance continues and there is no sense of remorse. Those of you that encouraged his misbehavior only spurred him on. He pushed and pushed until we had no choice. Zack's vengeful retaliation will not get him reinstated here. "Memorials" to Zack are unnecessary. No one should be proud of his behavior.
This is a thankless job but I volunteer to do it willingly because of the friends it has brought me from around the country. I am not going to let the attitudes of a few mar this wonderful website and the camaraderie we have created here. There is no reason why we can't all get along and work with each other. If you're here to cause trouble, we just plain don't need or want it. Find some other place to stir the pot. Let's all step forward on the right foot and continue to have fun.

No one person is this website! We all make up this website.
I like Zack, but this is also my sand box and I like my sand box just the way it is. I've been here since the beginning and I've seen the site evolve thru the years and there always been someone who thinks this is there forum to tell others how to run this site or their business. When Logan ran the site he was the final word... It was his way or the highway no ifs ands or buts...as Mac would say Carry On Gents

Thank you Mary (& All others in the control booth) for all that you do.
Using anyone as an example, let's say someone gets banned for life. We can say me. I did something to someone here and got banned 'for life'. Murdering someone and getting 'life' in prison averages about 12-14 years if you rack up all your good behavior days. So let's say treating people badly is about a tenth as bad as murdering them. What would be the chance of having that sentence lifted in, say, 12-14 months with good behavior? I don't blame the owners for defending themselves and being passionate about this site, but I don't blame us members for being just as passionate at our level. Not everyone will always agree with everyone else. If they did, I wouldn't have a job. If I had to guess, I'd say most of the people here have more friends ON here than in thier real, everyday lives and it would hurt if they were suddenly taken away after what, 7 years of writing, meeting, sharing pictures, car tips, etc. etc. Personally, I'd like to see the day when you two can sit side by side and recall when you didn't get along so well but got over it.

To: Mary & Moderators... Thanks for all your hard work and efforts in running this great site. I personally have no problems with Zack, but do what you must, I understand.
It's unfortunate that Zack crossed too many lines and you do what you have to do.
I would still rather read one of his posts then 500 "does my blue marauder look fat on me" and the "my favorite nursery rhyme was old MacDonald when I was three, what was yours?" and such. :sleepy:

I thought there were going to be no further discussions on Zack. If it was started you would delete it. Now that you start something it can stay and for the first time in a while a thread you started isn't instantly locked.
Zack made others look bad because he knew what he was doing better than they were. You know what's true because some actually called and CAME to him for advice or troubleshooting.
I guess we can do this all day long. :argue:

Mary, you and the other moderators do a great job. I wouldn't want to attempt it myself.
I hate that Zack got himself banned, and banned, and banned, and banned, etc, etc. He does have a lot to offer but I understand the reasons. Pushing the limits shouldn't be necessary after figuring out where they are the first time. Resorting to the personal attacks certainly crossed the line.
Technically right but wrong in the presentation, he brought to light several valid points. The Trilogy kit design was improved, Dennis' business practices have improved, many Marauder owner' transmission shifting schedules have been improved.
He will be missed, as will many of the departed members. I just hope the site doesn't become a troll farm.

Like Dom said, Zack called it as he saw fit. Sometimes a little harsh I agree, and personal which I don't like, but you know what, he has saved me countless money and aggravation. I should have listened to his heads of warning when I decided to business with a certain person, but no, i'm too bull headed and way too nice, and just had to give them a chance. stupid stupid me. Like someone else quoted, i'd rather read one thread a day from Zack, than all the pointless ones that fill up day after day!
Can't you (atleast for awile) oversee his posts before they post? Kind of a grounding. I guess i'm just happy to have met him, drank his beer, stole some good ideas, ETC. Plus the fact i'm only a two hr drive to his house. I'd stick up for just about anyone here just the same, most of us have something of value to contribute in our own way, however some of the good guys are once again leaving, and this isn't good at all! Why must we bow to our vendors when they do us wrong? Can't we come up with a set dollar in contributions to offset their fee's? I mean, WE are the owners of the MM. I don't know, just thinking out loud.

I guess my good behavior question is out of the question :dunno: I'm very easy going but I don't particularly like everyone here, we can't all get along all the time. I think Zack got a raw deal. If it's a vendor issue, here's my take on it: I tried to buy from 2 different vendors here and was completely ignored by one, and treated like they didn't have the time to mess with me by the other. Zack has always answered me. If he was in it for the money, he would have sold me a black badgeless grill back when I wanted to buy one from him. His reason for not selling me one? "Your car is blue, it will look gay." 300 easy bucks, the man said no because he wanted no part of making a Marauder look gay. That is standing on something you believe in right there. I thought he was an ass at first (well he still is, :Dbut...) and then I got to know him, that's just how he is. Brutally honest, but I'm the same way so it doesn't bother me. I'm a fun loving criminal so what bothers others doesn't faze me that much, but I remember if someone burns me. If holding a grudge were an Olympic sport I'd bring home the gold constantly, cause I may forgive but I never forget. I would hope that others (owners) can also forgive at some point. You have basically thrown out half an Encyclopedia set on Marauders because you didn't like a few sentences in one guys chapter. I like to ask when I have a question, I like the human interaction, that's why I rarely use the search function, but I guess I'll have to do that more from now on since one of, if not THE main person at the 'help desk' can't post here no mo. Or I could just call and bug people

This has been alleged but nothing I have seen proves he does anything with engine tunes that you can't get from SCT.
He has done wonders with transmission performance through trial & error and driving the cars, listening to the car owner's requests instead of sending out the hard-shifting gear-banging transmission tunes that some people have a mis-conception that drivers want.

Don't ask don't tell.
Actually what it was you could smoke a poll, but not eat a hot dog, what this means is don't ask don't tell you could be gay and stay in the service, but if you became over weight you were thrown out, and the Navy's standards were all AFU, to determine if you were over weight they measured your neck and waist, if you had a large neck size you could pass, but really be over weight, if you had a small neck they could say you were over weight, and in reality you were not, then they started high year tenior, and this hurt the Navy real bad.

Then my car is the exception. 4 different tunes and my car became impossible to drive. The lock-up schedule was all over the place. It would lock up abruptly and then unlock that it felt like the car was hesitiating, and I actually had to turn around and drive home to re-load my original tune.
I wasnt impressed in the least.

I believe I was one of the first few he helped after he started daping into tuning the trans. He helped me keep my car after failed attempts by a past vendor who I had bought a product from and only needed a simple adjustment in the tune which the vendor never could get right. After explaining exactly what was going on, Zack had a good idea of what the problem was in my tune, he made his changes and I loaded up the tune and was back in business. The only engine tuning Zack has done on my car is advance the timing 1 degree past the normal SCT tune does other than that is all in the trans which kicks azz! My car is daily driven with over 60k miles driven and raced on his tunes and engine & trans are still solid.
Once my 4.10s go in I'll still be running a Zack tune and just another step closer to the goal of NA 12's.
Mary, I won't thank you for banning Zack but rules are rules and you enforced them so nothing left to say about it really. Zack will be missed, cheers good buddy

Mary,
I appreciate you being the "empire" of this site as it is a tough job, but it's got to be done. Some members don't agree with your decisions, but your responsible for maintaining a level of diplomacy among the masses and show to the "internet world" that this site must and does maintain a level of respect amongst it's members.
To manage a website where 4000+ worldwide members come together virtually with a car as the common link, is basically....mind boggling.
My hat is off to you and to the other owners.

If it was Zacks' work, I'll Call it a "Zack tune"
If it was Lonnies/Darriens/Lidios/Dennis Work, pirated , that is an entirely different story.

So what you're saying Bradley, is that unless Zack's tune is completely different in all aspects from the aforementioned, that it can't be called "Zack tune"? I call :bs:
We all learn from trial and error, or by assimilating info from others. If you've got four different tuners offering tunes with similar parameters, wouldn't logic dictate that if you were looking to develop your own performance tune that you'd want to be somewhere within those parameters? Or what of the dyno tuner? If he/she custom tunes your car and again the tuning paramaters are similar to those offered in the canned tunes, does that mean it's not really a "custom-tuned" car?
I've run several tunes in my car, the current being a tweaked Zack tune. I told him what I wanted changed, and Zack gave me exactly what I wanted. The man knows his stuff; some folks just won't acknowledge that.

It really doesn't matter what a tune is, if there is no formal copyright or patent it isn't a Dennis tune or a Lidio tune or a Zack tune. SCT might have a say on what a tune is and with a license agreement to vendors but that would be iffy at best.
With customisation, it pretty much makes it an open source free for all.

I for one, appreciate all the hard work and effort you mods put into this site. With that being said, i don't approve of your decision.
I never met Zack, but could see that he is very abbrasive in his often ill-advised wording.
A "personal" attack on you, as you call it, is costing the community as a whole. The guy made his car run 11.94 with a homemade blower that cost $3,028.
For those of you who don't recall, here is the link.
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=48894&highlight=Homemade+Eaton+kit
I DARE someone to find a better bargain. Don't waste your time looking. There are a few names that are held in high regard on this site, and Zack is one of them. As I scroll through posts, I see countless sigs with "Zack tune" in them. Yeah he may sound abbrasive and may be a moderator nightmare, but this is a car forum, not a chuirch choir group.
When I first joined this site, I knew immediately that Zack knew his ****. I searched all of his threads, and have found that 90% of the stuff that I know which is MM related is by reading his posts and threads.
He brought countless tunes to members here.
He brought the badgeless grill to members here.
He brought the "How-to" for the homemade 11second eaton.
Now, memebrs cant reach him for grills, and members cant reach him for tunes or his expert advise, which HURTS THE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE.
He probably has brought more info and knowledge than 99% of the community here, and now he is gone.
I for one, am not happy about this.

I stay out of all the drama on this site. It' never interested me to get involved in the pettiness and just plain poor behavior that some of the "adults" display from time to time. Thankfully, that is kept to a minimum and the large majority of folks here display a basic respect for others. If you can't do that, I don't care what else you have to say, good or bad and the drama, discord and distracting threads that result only further fuel the fire and insight more distracting personal attacks. Some enjoy this and probably watch soap opera's all day and never miss a Dr Phil episode.
I heard a lot about banning someone who gave good mechanical advice and thereby help the membership as a whole. If you don't follow the rules of conduct in any forum (except Hollywood) then you don't get to play in the sandbox. It's pretty simple, this is not the battlefield, there's no need to shout.
Many have thanked Mary for her efforts but I'm not sure everyone realizes the extent to which Mary has contributed to this site. Having worked closely with her putting together MV5, I can tell you she is 110% committed to the people on this site. What she did behind the scenes made the whole event a success. CAM got the credit for putting on the event but without her diligence, it would have been extremely difficult. We had lots of dedicated members working hard to put his together but she was involved every step of the way for the 6 months it took to make it happen. You can bet she is involved in every event that this site contributes to in some fashion. She is the person usually thanking the organizers of the event, but not getting those kudos herself. So, bottom line for me here is she has contributed more than anyone in keeping this site running smoothly (as a public forum can run) and making the many sponsored events successful for the membership as a whole.
If you've never been in charge of a large group or organization, you won't appreciate how hard it is to be the bad guy when you have to be. I personally have tremendous respect for how well she does her thankless job. Bunny Rocks! You have my support and many thanks! That goes for all the members and owners that continue to make this enjoyable.

I have held my tongue long enough on this one. In my opinion, the most straight forward and easiest way to remove the rancor here is for the owners to remove themselves from the moderating role. Having multiple owners created its own set of problems that I can go into further if need be. The owners should pick the moderators, give them the keys to the city and then step back. Micromanaging only works if you are a one person company.
By standing back and letting the appointed moderators work, the owner's real power lies in the ability to enter the fray only if the house is on fire, and I mean going to the 4th alarm.
If I had been privy to the sale of this site a few years ago, I would have made an attempt to buy it lock, stock and barrel and turn the keys over to some of the old guard, some of the newbies and maybe one or two of the "controversial" folks.
Absolutely no disrespect is meant to be conveyed to the current ownership, but when I see the same issues cause the same problems over and over again, I thought it was time to voice my opinion.

Sorry the loser in this whole issue are the members who will not get his knowledge because the owners don't know how to handle him. No one does so better to kick him off. I agree with FormulaMarauder and MyTMerk. Bottom line it makes no difference does it, owners want him off, so he's gone!
