Are engine additives - the ones that allegedly bond to the metal a good idea ?

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!

They DO NOT work...the FTC has fined most of those companies for false and/or unsubstantiated advertising...check out any of the 41 documents in this link (http://www2.ftc.gov/search?NS-search-offset=0&NS-search-type=NS-boolean-query&NS-max-records=20&NS-collection=Full_Website&NS-query=oil%2Badditives&x=70&y=24&NS-search-page=results&). My favourite additives link is this one (http://www.vtr.org/maintain/oil-additives.html).

Some of them actually cause MORE wear and damage to your motor, and under NO circ-umstances should you EVER add anything with PTFE (Teflon) to your oil (read my favourite link above)...the BEST (and ONLY) thing to put in your crankcase is either the factory recommended 5W-20 synthetic blend, or a high quality full synthetic (I use Mobil 1)...and use a good filter like Motorcraft, K&N, Mobil 1, Purolator Pure-One, etc...

let me also throw my .02's in. the PTFE poduct ranges in size from 5 -20 micron. oil filter filter to < 2 micron with 99.x effeciency.

lets see once around thru the motor ad stuck in the filter - pretty expensive for 10 - 15$.

I work for an engineering office of the US Army that deals with, among other cool things, qualifying and validating all of the lubricants that the US Military uses. The engineers in who are in the trenches say that NONE of that type of additive are effective and many are destructive. Some of these guys are car nuts (one is a fan of RX-7s).
