Imagine answering an ad for a used car, then being ambushed by would-be robbers.

That's what happened Friday night on the South Side. Police say the suspects in that attempted robbery picked the wrong victims: two off-duty police officers from south suburban Markham.

CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot explains how the tables were turned on the suspects.

One officer fought back against the suspects, but he was hurt. The officer was at home recovering Saturday night. He's taking pain medication. He has bruises all over his chest from the beating he took. His colleagues are praising the 25-year-old officer as a hero.

He couldn't talk to us because of his undercover work.

"I think it's amazing, that you're getting beaten with a baseball bat, you've got a gun pointed to another officer's head, and then you're able to squeeze off some rounds and strike all three offenders and all three offenders are taken into custody," Markham Deputy Chief Tony De Bois said. "I think that's just awesome."

Co-workers described the courage of the undercover officer, who has on been on the force for a little more than a year.

The officer and his female partner went to a South Side home Friday night. They were answering an ad on craigslist for a car. They were told to go around the back of the house to look at the vehicle, in the 7800 block of South Yates Avenue.

That's when Markham police say they were ambushed by three men, who jumped out of trees. One of the men started beating the male officer with an aluminum baseball bat. Another man held a gun to the female officer's head.

"He pulled his weapon and announced his office, as a police officer," De Bois said. "The alleged offender with a gun then pointed away from the female officer and pointed it in the direction of our beaten officer. He then began to defend himself and fired several shots at the alleged offenders, striking all three."

Markham police say what happened to two of their own is a reminder for everyone meeting people face to face for the first time that they've connected with online. Buyers need "to make sure they're dealing with who they think they are," Markham Deputy Chief Jack Genius said.

"We should make the common criminal, thugs, out there, think twice," De Bois said. "You never know who you're walking up on. They might be walking up on a trained police officer, like they did last night."

Two of the possible suspects, who are all adult males, were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and one was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago Police News Affairs Officer JoAnn Taylor said.

Late Saturday, Chicago police said three Chicagoans were each charged with two counts of attempted armed robbery: William Hall, 27; Daryl McClure, 27, and Rodney Youngblood, 19. They were expected in bond court Sunday.

Craigslist did not respond to emails Saturday asking for comment about the case. The website does offer advice, however, to users on how they can avoid scams and fraud.

The captions appear to imply that Youngblood, McClure and Hall are members of the Chicago Police Department. That is not correct. I think that the photos are Chicago Police Department file photos..... correct? So I fixed it below ....

Where did you get the photo of the Three Stooges ?

They just look too stereotypically criminal...I didn't click on the link but I would bet those are fake photos...you couldn't get guys to look like that if you were making a movie !!!

The middle guy has a toothache ? Was he shot in the mouth ?

The other guy looks like the Miller Lite delivery guy stealing the beer from the rich people who want to be left alone !

And the last one is some rapper or maybe Rodney King ?

Evidently one of the PO's was a female and one POS had a gun to her head while the other 2 were thumping the male PO with the ball bats, quick thinking, good shooting and a nice outcome to a deadly situation. You know if the PO's would've surrendered their pieces and the scumbags found out they were cops they would've murdered them.
And Drew, keep in my what I tell you every time I talk to you,be VERY careful!
