View Full Version : Factory Ford Escape in dash 6-CD changer installed

Just like to pass along this "budget" stereo upgrade I did today. (Thanks to a tip from shodude on MCM)
It's a factory stereo from a 2005 Escape, it has a in dash 6-CD changer and it works with the steering wheel buttons and sub, the factory changer in the trunk won't work though.
It suppose to be able to play Mp3's , but I can't get it to work.. But it plays burnt CD's with converted MP3's just fine.
I like the Factory look and the 6-CD in dash is very useful and the DSP button really improves the sound, no more tape-player!
Here's some pictures:

Neat conversion idea!
BTW: For a second I thought that you were going to install it with 12 penny nails and a hammer!..

that is the same radio available in 04 Mustangs, Fseries turcks, and Rangers.... I always wandered but never knew if it would work.
Awesome!!

The nails are perfect for removing the old stereo, no need for any special removal tool.

IIRC There is a harness you can get that will add an 1/8" aux jack to the location of your choosing for that radio.

Also Mustangs use a different mounting system for the radio. My friend at work offered me the one from his 05 but it mounted with flanges and screws.

Glenn from what I read on MCM it is a straight plug and play.

Did you need a program code to get the radio to work? I also have a non working stock radio. Is the sound quality any better or is that a funtion of the speakers.
Thanks for the great update info and pictures.

Rangers and F series in 03 have the same radio, but it might not have the sub hook up. Mustangs from 03/04 have the same radio, with sub hook ups, but mount defferently with plates, ill have to check mine to see if it has the pin olders on it still though.
05 stangs have different radios I believe.
there are 2 models for the Mach300 stereo for Escapes form that year. 32 other choices, but only 2 say Mach300, which is what 252life used.
exc. Hybrid; AM-FM-CD (6 disc, in dash), ID 5L8T-18C815-CD (Mach 300)
exc. Hybrid; AM-FM-CD (6 disc, in dash), ID 5L8T-18C815-CE (Mach 300) (http://car-part.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi)
You need to find which one he used to be sure it will work, sometimes the cars are picky.
there are 3 in your area. I put the link up for you in the last of the 2 options.... I selcted either one and both came with the same results, so it may not make a difference, sometimes its just build date, or a stupid clock like the 300Bs had.
Good Luck!

Does anyone have any specifics on this?
I think this is a great set-up, but without the tape player I will need another way to plug in my mp3 player (I hate the FM transmitter way, so that's not an option.)
Does the radio "sound as good"? As in same power and clarity as the stock system?

Sorry Glenn, it cant put up a direct link due to the way it searches...
Go to Car-Part.com and enter your area code and 05 escape and select Radio/CD Player. select either of the Mach300 stereos ( both of which sare next to each other and exclude the hybrid) and it will show you what you want.

it just means exclude hybrid.... i doubt the one 252life used was from the hybrid escape. i dont beleive the hybrids came with the Mach300 stereo.... it was an upgrade option on the escape.

I'll try and answer some of your questions.
The sound quality is noticeable better than the stock Marauder unit.
The white bracket as seen in the pic above has to be removed other than that it's plug and play!
Mercury Mariner and Ford Excursion have the exact same stereo.
But I think any unit will fit as long as it has all the same connections on the back. And it should be a mach 300 or audiophile unit.
I got mine from Discount-OEM-Radios (http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Discount-OEM-Radios__W0QQ_armrsZ1)on E-Bay ( And it says on the label it's from a 2005 Escape Hybrid)

I looked at this and and it looks good and all but how do I tell the receiver to select the AUX mode?
Also on the Escape raido swap - very nice. I'd do this, but DOES IT PLAY MP3 CD's - e.g. a data burned CD with 250 songs on it. Can anyone answer that?

From what I can understand the Mach 300 Escape stereo is suppose to be able to play Mp3's (it has the "CAT" button)
But I have tried a few different cd's with Mp3's (data burned) and it does not work, they just get ejected and the display says "CD-Rom".
Anny way I have bought an MP3 player adapter to hook up my MP3 player, It should work since the stereo has the SAT button.
I found the adapter on E-bay for $50 on Integration-Solutions (http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Integration-Solutions__W0QQ_armrsZ1)

i believe you have to "close" the cd to play mp'3 on the disk. haven't made one for the car in awhile. also i tried the mach 300 and didn't like the sound i then bought the AUDIOPHILE unit which is what i have now. i really like it.
alright if you want the radio that i have (which i believe is the best one ford makes that will just plug into the marauder) you have to look for this part number

Interesting thanks for posting the pictures!
So what are the differences between the Mach 300 & Audiophile?, (I thought they where the same only that Ford renamed it to Audiophile on the later models.)
I see it doesn't have the DSP button, what are the different audio settings available on the Audiophile?
(I like the sound on the Mach 300 when I use the adjustable DSP ambiance setting and the "front seats" setting, it's definitely a big improvement over the stock unit)

honestly i'm not sure i've used the mach 300 in the marauder. i had it in my SHO and didn't like the sound. the audiophile sounded much better in the sho and better then the stock unit in the marauder. the audiophile i believe is more powerfull per channel but other then that i can't think of a difference. i'll have to look that up. nice install! glad it worked out for you.

HI,
Do you have pictures of the back of the radios? All the plugs are the same but just in different locations on the back versus the stock 03 marauder radio? Also, the model number you have listed is very close to a radio I looked at except the last two letters are DD versus your FD. Do you know what the difference is? Sorry for all the questions.

the 6l8t-18c815-DD does not have a subwoofer out and uses the older ford radio plug. the marauder has the new(er) "world plug II" i think thats what ford calls them.

The Mach 300 that I have does not play mp3's
The sub works ( it has 3 connectors at the back 1 of them is for the sub)
And also get one that has the SAT button that way you can hook up your mp3 player / iPOD via a AUX input converter.

Wouldn't the Escape head unit (left) require the housing to be shaved since it is not shaped like the Marauder head unit (right)?
I just installed a single-din JVC KD-AVX77 due to the fact that the installer would have had to shave the housing in order for a double-din to fit. If I can avoid altering the housing, I will definitely look into this head unit!

nope the opening is the same as the one on the left. if i remember correctly the stock marauder unit is just like the one on the left but with the plugs like the one on the right. the one on the right is acutally from a 98-99ish i believe.

WOW! Very pleased with my '06 Escape Audiophile. Installed it today. Way more volume and improved sub-woofer bass. Works great especially with the 4 Infinity speakers. The sound really shakes the car. I also like the in-dash 6 CD changer - very smooth. I always get CJJD errors from the OEM trunk changer. I now have to try some audio CDs in the new unit.

The "-FD" Escape radio rocks. I just spent 30 minutes driving the MM and listening to the Rollin Stones. The bass is so strong it vibrates my glasses and blurres my vision. I cannot imagine anyone needing more volume or bass unless you are a real audio nut. Of course the 4 Infinity speakers really help too.

Even the guy on the phone couldn't understand why a bunch of orders came in for that particular radio. ;)
BTW, they never refunded me my money until I called them so if you got the declined email, you'll have to call to be refunded.

Confused too.........
I don't listen to any CD's so I could care less about it holding 6 or 86 for that matter. My six disc got disconnected when I hooked up my Ipod adapter.
My quest is to find a much better sound only with a factory looking unit, also retaining wheel controls and sub, so my question is: Audiophile or Mach?

If I'm reading this thread correctly both 5L8T-18C815-CE (MACH 300) and 6L8T-18C815-FD (AUDIOPHILE) still allows use of steering wheel control and subwoofer. Supposedly the AUDIOPHILE has a better sound and offers more amps per channel.

I went through this process last month. The best radio is the 6l8t-18c815-FD. It has more power and sounds better. I installed mine and the sound is great and all the controls on the steering wheel work as they should and the sub. I should also note that model number 6l8t-18c815-FC is the same as the FD but only an earlier model. Works the same. Same radio.

Debate time. I bought Speeds Audiophile for a great price and ended up getting the disc player to work flawlessly! Problem is my Ipod adapter from the stocker will not work with this unit!!!
I bought this for better sound, all I ever listen to is my Ipod.
Original radio PIE number FRD03-AUX
The one for this radio FRD03-AUX/s (Satelite)
Another $90.00 or back to stocker??? I am waiting to hear back from PIE.

Yeah, the top had a dent right where the door mechanism is placed. It took quite a bit of work to get everything realighned, but so far so good. I was just bored really, I don't ever play CD's anymore.
I am awaiting an email from them. From the research I did the FRD03-AUX/S is the one needed to "take over" the SAT function.
The FRD03-AUX takes over the trunk CD changer on the stock unit.
Either way both are an EXTREMELY tight fit. I cut the mounting tabs off the one I was using, plus very slight cutting in the dash to fit the unit deep inside.
I'll post up when I hear back.

do post how you got the harness in with the radio. i tried everything to get mine in the dash with no luck. i decided to build my own harness and mount the FRD03-AUX/S in the trunk where the CD changer is.

11-06-2009, 02:44 PM
The ONLY difference between the AUX and AUX/s is the software chip inside. I talked to the lead R&D guy there today and I am trying to work something out.
As for the harness.... If you take the radio out and look all the way down and to the right you will see a cavity that the black box will fit into after you shave the mounting ears off with a bench grinder. You will not get it back out after you press it into place without using a small saw and simply triming a small piece of plastic out of the way. Trust me, no biggie, maybe a 1/2 inch or so. You will see what i'm talking about when you go to remove it in the future. As for the wiring, just route the best that you can, trial and error. I never did get the right side to fully clip into place, but you really couldn't tell, even after I pointed it out to other members.
There is also a FRD03-pod/s that lets you use the buttons on your radio and I think the wheel also. This is not cheap, the best I found so far is $139.00.
Also there is an FRD04-pod/s. Haven't dug around enough yet to know the difference. I will be talking to the manager of PIE monday to get further details.

Please tell me there is not a different FRD03-pod/s for steering wheel controls.

Ok.
I just talked to the sales manager, here is our three options.
1) FRD03 AUX - Stock radio, hard wired hook up, Audio only, no frills, but great sound
2) FRD03 AUX/S - Basically any 6 disc radio with SAT function that will directly plug into our cars. Same as above, no difference.
3) FRD03 POD/S - Will only play 2008 and OLDER Ipods and have the capability of using steering wheel controls to control the songs off the Ipod. Very nice system, but was told it was quicky fading away because of newer and newer Ipods coming out that do not work with this. He didn't mention anything about a newer system in the works.
4) FRD03 /PC /POD2 - Will not work.
Hope this helps.

In reality, without a mosfet type power supply, those IC's in those units may put out 12W RMS per channel X 4 48W RMS . The Alpine probably does 8W RMS per channel X 4 32W RMS. Maybe 1 - 1 1/2 db difference in power, enough to hear a volume difference, but not smoking power by any means.
The high figures of 45W per channel is peak power, not rms.

IMO put the foam back. Back to topic. Did you get the correct PIE adapter for that headunit? They have a different chip from the stockers. On the stockers they take power from the 6 disc, on the Audiophile they take power from the SAT feature. Have you tried a hook up without the PIE?

i still need to find one of these....
I got an audiophile -FD radio for about 90 bucks from a junkyard, and for some reason it won't fit all the way into the dash, its as if the cables are too short and won't let the radio sit all the way back.
And to answer smoke, my sub works but I don't use an adapter, maybe that's the problem.

Was thinking about going back and running the Audiophile without the PIE one more time. I did a sanity check before running the wiring w/ the adapter just to make sure the head unit worked but didn't really crank it up or anything....mostly looking for lights and buttons and FM reception.
Will have to do a double check on the PIE P/N. Watched this thread very closely a couple or so pages back and got what I thought was right. Kept the packaging so it won't be too hard to retrace my steps. (still have the foam too LOL) ;)
I know I have 1 pigtail hanging loose and was assuming it was for the 6-disk - may in fact be dealing w/ the "chip" issue justbob so thanks for the direction.
@J D: when I put in my FC and needed room for the PIE I pretty much lopped off the entire back end the "tray" the head unit sits in inside dash. I knew I had to drop the wiring off the back of the opening and down into the dash because there is tons of room behind the HVAC and between the glove box and instrument pod (for this wiring anyway). I started with a little snip-snip (more like a cut-cut with a hobby saw) and opened up a little room and pretty much resolved to whack the whole back lip of the "tray" and when I push the head unit in now the factory wiring/PIE wiring all slides back and out of the way no problem. For me anything short of clearing out the whole back side of this opening wouldn't even let me have a hope of locking in the unit to the dash.
Thanks all!
Best,
Jonathan

If you do find that you have the wrong p/n, it is very easy to replace the chip inside with the correct one like I did, no soldering involved, just pushes right in. They sent it to me for free but said there would probably be a small charge if too many of us put in orders for a change out due to changing our radios. Also, I don't remember any pigtail not connected. Hope this helps. I couldn't imagine a life without my Ipod!
I think your extra pigtail might be the issue here.
Also, I believe I had to disconnect the pigtail at the 6 disc in the trunk to get the Ipod to work. If you need me to check, hollar at me.

Thank you! I sorta half-felt like I may be diagnosing my own problem when I wrote I had a pigtail left over (off the factory harness) that didn't have a home. Need to pull the unit and start from scratch.
I confirmed I bought the AUX/S...as for what chip is actually in it? Hmmmm - I think I'll just make sure I did my job right first - will probably find I was pushing too hard (end of day, after oil change, swapping the driving lights out for the new "Mazda" ones, bleed through all fresh brake fluid, etc etc etc).....
Thanks for the heads up on the changer connection....so far everything is working (PIE is running my external Sirius tuner right now)....just no tuubage....
Best,
Jonathan

 SO, WHAT IS THE BEST STOCK RADIO THAT FITS IN AND WORKS RIGHT IN MM?
I just did this - put in the Audiophile CD-6 from an '07 Escape. Sounds great, finally have a subwoofer back again, plus the steering wheel controls. I got really lucky and found the unit on ebay for $39 + $14 shipping, buy-it-now. Seller is a salvage yard in Ohio named deer creek auto parts. They are new to ebay and selling stuff cheap - don't know if they have any more of these headunits, but this one is in great condition. :)
I've been through this whole thread and never found anyone stating they got one of these units to play a Mp3 disc, I was thinking about a upgrade to my MM but unless it will play Mp3, I'll keep what I have...
I'm thinking it won't because the units that do usually have Mp3 on the face or buttons, example is this Mustang unit I have in my '98 Grand Marquis...

Most all the Ford radios in the last dozen years or so have the clock, there is a pin on the power plug that determines if it is functional or not(either ground or open)... The '03 & '04 MM use same radios but the clock feature is canceled in the '03, due to a different connection in the harness...
The audiophile unit I put in my '03 has the clock. Works as it should. Sounds great.
Mine came today, yup it plays Mp3 so I'm happy...

Got my clean AudioPhile unit on Friday. Found it on eBAY for $150. Works GREAT. I had to remove a white plastic clip on the bottom/back of the unit so that it would mount level (slide in) in the bay. Mine came out of a totaled 06 Escape with 32000+ miles. bonus: 6 burned cd's were in it! (some girls music)
-Does play MP3s!
-Does have much better RDS support - scrolls faster +more characters
-Does have much more power.
-Sounds like the bass and treble are "turned up" from the factory.
-Steering wheel controls work perfectly.
Now I can put 1000 songs on it easily. Seems to play most bitrates too.

#1, The CD changer didn't work; ate the first CD I tried loading and then malfunctioned.
#2 The unit worked okay, but the thing as damaged in shipment, and the lower left corner of the faceplate was shattered.
Got a refund on both (which I bought through LKQ on e-Bay; good folks, easy to work with, but I digress).

You guys want to be searching for 06, 07 Esacpe radio - then look to see if it's an audiophile unit.
Again:
steering wheel controls will work
sub woofer works
higher wattage (+cleaner sound) factory looking unit that hooks up with same wire harness. Do loose the 6-CD mount in the trunk, but so what the unit has 6-slot cd loader that easily reads mp3 cd's 500 songs+ on one disc.
Part number listed in my sig is good, try searching for 07 Escape, that's how I found mine. Is a worthwhile painless upgrade (provided you get a working unit! Cheesehead.. . ;)

Not sure how you got the trunk one to work? Anyways I am sure you ever so slightly dented the top center (metal) directly behind the CD slot. The eject mechanism is right behind there and is extremely fragile. It took me less than 20 minutes to figure it out. Very common problem.
Not sure how you got the trunk one to work?
Maybe the Mach 300 will???
The audiophile unit will not, at least the two good ones I have won't... I also have Rex's bad Audiophile unit for parts, it's defiantly a POS... When it gets balky, enough fiddling and slapping the side will get the discs to unload, but it's yet to play a Mp3 disc(Don't think a Mach 300 will either?) ...
Mounting the unit completely into the dash caused one of mine to give the eject error, but it seems OK at the point just prior, guessing the chassis is being twisted slightly... My 2nd unit is going into the '07 Grand Marquis, but hasn't happened yet...

Does your radio have the satelite receiver on it? We were going to upgrade my wife's radio in her Escape and were told that the satelite receiver was over $300, plus installation to set up as an OEM system. We ended up just putting in an aftermarket satelite receiver and antenna and broadcast it through the existing audio system.

I also have an Amp and basslink and need a pro to help me get it all connected. The stereo shop told me that only Ford makes this part for the Satelite.
The dealer said the part would be about $300 plus installation.
After looking through this thread a bit more I did find the part number for the Satelite FRD03 AUX/S and after a search online found many for around $70.

Unless you buy the related parts from Ford, you will not get the built-in satellite radio to work.
If you buy the axillary unit you will need to get a satellite radio that had RCA outputs so you can hear the satellite radio thru the headunit, however, there will be no way to control the satellite radio other than volume.

Thanks Fastmerc.
I think it is sinking into my thick head. I need two additional parts. This RCA unit costing about $50 - $70 (The stereo place told me about an RCA unit thingy) and the Ford part (cost about $350) to get the satelite to work.
I was quoted $500 (all parts and labor) out the door to have the whole thing done by the audio guy that does all the work for Team Ford in Marietta.
Does anyone have the part number for this Ford part to get the Satelite to work?

I can't recall what the specific differences are between the ED and CD units, give these guys a call, they should be able to help you out.

That's a no go, those have the earlier 16 pin power/speaker plug... Could be used with an adapter or replacing the current power/speaker plug but i don't recommend that... Thos don't have as powerful amp as the Audiophile and can't play MP3...

I installed the Audiophile 6 Cd changer this afternoon Got it in pretty quick and sounds great . The only issue is that I can not seem to get the locking tabs on the passenger side to engage. Tried several times and also tried moving the wiring and antenna wire around to see if that what the issue was . Any suggestions ?

I was having the same problem today when I did my install. I removed the nut and the plastic bracket on the back of the new unit and it seemed help it fit better.

Good point, I took mine off before initial installation, so I didn't have any issues with fitment.

Well, I found 3 of these units at a local wrecker, and bought them for myself and 2DMax. Installed with no drama and loving them!

I just bought mine and installed it in yesterday. What a difference. I found mine at www.car-part.com . In Florida, there are 2 other yards that have the 6l8t-18c815-fd for $75.
Next up......Sirius satellite radio.

The kit is in. Right now I have channel 184 (the preview station).
To those with the Escape Audiophile radio and are interested in getting Sirius (no double entendre), see my signature.

Installed one today, almost direct fit if not the top back of the Escape audiophile radio that made it hard to push in.
Look better then the original, 6 cd in dash and mp3. A must!

yep, mp3 capability was a plus and I think it sounds better than the stock unit. Surprising how easy the removal and installation is!

CD stuck inside? Do you use CD's with stick on labels? That is a big no no...
Google "CD LOAD ERROR FORD RADIO". There is a bunch of "fixes" out there.
thanks fastblackmerc
nope, don't use those labels, learned that lesson on my '95 SHO
Google to the rescue. . .
