I just drove from Waukesha, WI to Champagne, Il and back. I got 18.1 mpg. Not bad for a S/C car!

I got over 19 MPG going to JAX from ATL several weeks ago - and almost got busted for illegal warp speed on an unapproved shuttle route - 4:10s, TC3500 and heavy boost whine.

Not to one up anyone, but I recently returned from my annual 2300 mile round trip from ATL to NY. Averaged 25MPG. I'm a very conserative driver.

I have a non S/C car.

This includes a lot of cruise control, a full trunk with a loaded large cooler, and it was cool the week I was on the road. Not much stop and go traffic, but did drive around town on LI and upstate. This car has always been great on gas. I usually average 19 around town in ATL traffic.

My mods also help:

Stock gears
Ford shorty headers
X pipe
Flowmasters
Under drive pully's

I average just a hair under 23 MPG if I keep it to 70 MPH. That's with 4.10 gears, 3500 stall converter, Vortech V3 S-trim air-air.

If I keep it under 55 Mph I can also get 18mpg

If I drive it hard I get great "smiles per gallon" .... miles per gallon around 10mpg

I have been driving the '65 T-Bird a lot. I am up to 12.78 MPG with old points and condenser, ancient coil and plugs that needed replacing three years ago. Maybe I should put a two barrel on that 390.?

My marauder usually gets 22 - 26 on the highway. 4.10 and under 75 MPH.

My old 500hp Cobra with a Vortech averaged 24mpg. I get less than that in my stockish Marauder.

Maybe it needs a S/C.

That's as good an excuse as any I ever came up with. I say go for it!

What gear do you have Blazin? I ran 70MPH home from Tenn. and got 22.5! (stock gear) Wanna hear something better? The last time I did mileage tests she was only a year old with about 14,000 miles and the BEST I could ever do was 21.5!!!! I guess she's just a little "looser" these days.

Just got back from a Chitown road trip and only managed to stay out of the throttle on one of the fillups...got 23.2 MPG runnin 74 MPH for the entire tank (65MPH speed limit in 'sconsin and Ill)...

I also checked the MPG on the one tank I burned up in Chicago which included a lot of happy idjut driving- 16MPG under those conditions...Only had one real challenge tho- I got nicked off the line driving on rte 59 heading towards the tollway by a sweet 65 GTO rag top in Bartlett but blew by him when my MM rapped out in 2nd...got off it at about 90 before the local police had a chance to nab me.... not sure if that counts as a kill but it sure was fun. We chatted at the next light and he said there's a SB in Streamwood that beat him in the same way...

:burnout:

I put 1700 miles on her and didn't spot another MM the whole way :(

Maybe you have aftermarket gears and someone took the tune back off the car when they sold it (which would report the wrong speed to the computer and cause all kinds of mayhem)?

Was that when slowing down with a trailer attached?

I know how to get it to read like that too. ;)

You know you have to calibrate the scangauge to get the right MPG right?

Sorry I don't pull trailers with my MM like you do.

Yes I know how to calibrate it correctly, I've had it over a year. I'm not saying I get that to a TANK, straight flat roads with enough throttle to maintain speed and keep the converter locked I get 28-31mpg while driving.

I daily drive my MM (5k miles every 3 months give or take) so MPG is important to me.

As far as all highway long trip? The best I have gotten was about 26.9 to 16 gallons at 75-78mph. I have two Zack tunes, one is all around fun street, they other is a hybrid secret. At 60mph in O/D with converter locked I run 1725 rpms with cruise control on.

does a tune help with the gas mil?

ctrlraven
09-01-2009, 12:24 PM
does a tune help with the gas mil? It can if you can keep your foot out of the throttle due to enjoying the car a lot more with some added power and most importantly the trans shifts 10x million times better.

Best I ever got was 22-23 on the highway and 18-20 in town. When the geniuses in Washington D.C. mandated 10% ethanol, my mileage dropped 15%--and it pinged so bad that Reinhart had to send me a new tune. The only time it ever gets up to 20MPG now is when I'm taking a trip out in the sticks where I can buy real gas.

ctrlraven

I started getting better gas mileage when the increased the ethanol amount in gas. You might want to try a different gas station or go with brand name only. I only put Exxon or Shell in my car, anything else I get no where near the mileage I do from Exxon or Shell.

you must have a magic car. there is less energy in ethanol than in gas.

I'm not saying I get hybrid mileage but I drive the same route day in and day out every week so I know when I've driven too hard/fast and when I granny it cause it shows.

The very first tank of gas I put in the car was a discount brand, I got no more than 180 miles to 16 gallons at fill up. I knew something was wrong so I went to Shell, filled her up and got 270-280 which I knew was a lot more like it or at least closer lol.

I just drove from Waukesha, WI to Champagne, Il and back. I got 18.1 mpg. Not bad for a S/C car!I don't know. On a trip to and from New Jersey, we attained an average of 20.2mpg in our 1999 SVT Lightning.
