Pet Tortoise Digs To Freedom, Found A Mile Away
Last Update: 8/11 1:48 pm
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Two Ohio women who papered their neighborhood with more than 100 "Missing Tortoise" signs have recovered their runaway pet nearly a mile away.
"Ophelia" disappeared from the Columbus backyard of partners Lisa Dupler and Nicole Zahrndt on Wednesday by tunneling under a fence. The tortoise, more than one foot long and weighing at least 10 pounds, was discovered Sunday outside a woman's apartment window several blocks from home.
Stacy Sturgill called Dupler and Zahrndt on Monday after reading in The Columbus Dispatch about the heartbroken women and their search. Sturgill and her boyfriend were given a $120 reward.
Ophelia's owners say they'll push their backyard fence deep into the ground so the tortoise won't get out again.
