This is the 9th year of this grass roots event put on for racers, by racers! We are also happy to announce the addition of a judged car show this year, along with a open test and tune for those that do not make the weight or choose not to bracket race, so there is something to do for everyone!

Mike this is great news! The question I have is do you need a rollbar if the car goes faster than 11.49? Some guys think that a full frame car can go 11.0 with out one. Could you give us the truth on this?

Thanks John

NHRA rules will be enforced. NHRA rules require a roll bar for a full frame car running 11.49 or quicker.

FordNut
09-08-2009, 07:12 AM
A roll bar is good to 10 flat (with unaltered floor pan and firewall), 9.99 or quicker requires a NHRA certified cage. The roll bar must be attached to the frame in a body-on-frame vehicle. It must be a 5-point (minimum) roll bar. One thing I've noticed on most of the Marauders with roll bars is that they may not meet all the requirements of the roll bar rules. The rear brace can only have one bend and the maximum angle is 30 degrees. Most of the Marauder bars I've seen have a bend at the roof and then the bar goes through the package tray. I don't know if there are more bends inside the package tray, but if so it doesn't comply. It does appear that most of them have about a 45 degree bend, which is well in excess of the 30 degree limit. But just how closely will they be inspected at tech?

They didn't have a problem with Sherms roll bar. Which is the popular marauder design thru the package tray only one bend. They did have a problem with rubber valve stems in the front tires.

Make sure your helmet is snell certified of one of the following in the paragraph.

Do I need a helmet, and if so, what kind?
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/images/spacer.gifA helmet is required for the driver of any car or truck running 13.99 seconds or quicker in the quarter mile, and for the rider of any motorcycle. Most drivers can use a helmet meeting SNELL K98, M2000, SA2000, M2005, or SA2005 specifications. Professional category and some alcohol burning vehicles require an SA rated helmet. It is important to note that the helmet rating must be designated on a tag INSIDE the helmet, or sewn to one of the helmet straps. The designation stenciled on the exterior of the helmet is insufficient for NHRA technical inspection. Also, some tracks require a helmet on ALL drivers, so check in advance.

Different tracks have different inspectors. Attached is what I usually refer to regarding roll bars. Probably one of the most nit-picky track inspectors I've heard of. It would be interesting to see what he thinks of the Marauder roll bars. I think he's at Firebird Raceway. Anybody want to go to Phoenix? Yuk! Sorry to those who live there and like it, I worked there two years and hated the place. Too hot, too many people, over-policed, expensive.

I'm surprised more of the fast Marauders haven't been dinged on that one.

And do they ever ask about SFI balancers, flexplates, flexplate shields, transmission shields/blankets?

They gave me grief over my helmet last year. I have a full-face DOT approved helmet for my Harley, but it didn't meet the above noted specs. You'd think that if the helmet was fine in case I back-flipped off my Harley, it would be sufficient wrapped inside a 4000+ shell. They also didn't like my choice of jacket-------:P He said it was stylish, but not approved.
They let me run, but said they would probably stop me next time.

For people like me, who do this once a year, it's a PITA. I got the approved jacket now and I guess I'll start shopping for another Damn Helmet.

FordNut

I believe one of the differences in the DOT testing for bike helmets vs the Snell rating for car helmets is the increased fire resistance necessary for car helmets.

Fordnut could you explain the 10.90 index class to us. How it works and what cars would qualify for this type of racing.:)

FordNut
09-09-2009, 11:44 AM
I don't know much about it. I assume the point is to run as close as possible to 10.90 without breaking out. It's heads-up pro-tree racing but instead of trying to go as fast as possible like the Big Dog class, you're supposed to run 10.90. There are a couple of ways to do it, one is to build a car that will go 10.90 but that's it. Another is to build a car that goes faster, then make sure you let off early enough at the big end to not break out. The pros do it with electronics (Deadenbear throttle stops and such) but the rules for this class/event state "no electronics".

My personal feelings: I don't see the class being a really big draw. I assume you would have to meet 10.90 et safety requirements in order to qualify. I figure if I was gonna hack up my interior to put in a roll bar, why not run all out in the BD class instead. But then again, maybe it's good to have a heads up class that you don't have to run against an 8-second Impala?

mlschultz
09-09-2009, 11:47 AM
Glen, aka RatSSled, on the Impala boards, is running the 10.90 Pro Street class at SSHS9. Here is his description of the 10.90 class, and the rules. This is going to be a cool class to watch, and race in!

In case there are some that don't know what this class is about or want more information in order to decide, well it's basically a bracket race and a grudge run on a pro tree. However, the dial is predetermined and everyone dials 10.90 regardless of what they ran in qualifying. Both cars leave at the same time just like in a grudge run, except it's done on a pro tree just like the big dogs.

To make it even more fun, and give the slower cars a chance, the pairings will be based on a sportsman ladder. That means that the #1 qualifier runs the #9 qualifier, #2 vs. #10, etc. all the way to #8 vs. #16.

The idea here is to get your car running as close to 10.90 as possible. If you have to speed up, then crank in some more power, remove weight (down to 4,000 lbs) etc. If you run under 10.90, then take some power out, add some weight (in an approved manner) or deep stage. The closer you can get to a 10.90 the better.

So, in summary:
Heads UP on a .400 Pro Tree
Every car dials 10.90
16 Car field
Sportsman ladder based on ET (Closest to 10.90)
Normal Breakout rules, such that the most under dial loses.
Rules:
.400 Pro tree heads up on 7 second auto start
Min weight 4,000 lbs
Full bodied street cars only - No tube chassis cars
Tubbed and non tubbed cars allowed
Deep staging allowed but starter will not hold tree *
DOT and slick tires allowed
Open headers permitted
No electronics (trans brakes, throttle stops, delay boxes, etc. prohibited)
Car and driver must meet NHRA and track safety rules
Gasoline only, no alcohol
NHRA sportsman ladder used for eliminations
* Deep staging allowed but starter will not hold tree. When both prestage lights are activated auto start will be activated. When the 1st stage light is activated, the other competitor will have 7 seconds (subject to change depending on track settings) to get staged or they will be timed out.

Ga. residents know if this is true?

Last year when leaving the race events in the late afternoon , I got pulled over on I-85 just after getting on by a GHP. Said he turned around and followed me cause it said I had "tinted" tag cover, which is against the LAW in GA..

mine is hardly tint at all--slight dull to knock down the glare of the "white tag"........anyway------

Told the little twerp its not in NC-where I am headed back to....-he said , "well in GA. you gotta follow GA Law"....said Its a "warning this time--don 't come back into GA next time with a tinted tag cover".

So....was wondering --is this true in GA?...and for those coming ion from out of state--well, have your excuses ready ........maybe you'll get away with a warning---if they see ya cause apparently they don't like out-of-staters.

Glenn---any of this true?

Glenn
10-31-2009, 01:21 PM
GHP can be very difficult on the interstates. Very minor issue. But, you just do not see tinted plates in GA. So any tinted plate stands out. Just a warning - no harm.

Just to pass along. They are also pretty strict on window tint. Cars have to be 28-32% all around. Trucks and SUV's have to be the same on the two fronts only. These are easy targets and revenue.

Just to pass along. They are also pretty strict on window tint. Cars have to be 28-32% all around. Trucks and SUV's have to be the same on the two fronts only. These are easy targets and revenue.

Mine is illegal on the tag and the window tint. :D

I think I will get a "pass" this year!!!!!!!!!

Hope everyone had a great time. lol This event is like Christmas for me, and I look very much forward to it every year. Those that have never been to the shootout, have no clue what they are missing out on - it is that good! Thanks to all the volunteers, and sponsors that worked so hard to put this gig on every year! :)

Congratulations to all the winners, and my condolences to all the wounded warriors. 364 days to the next shootout, so you better hurry and get your junk fixed! :)

Here is a link to some pictures from the track photographer. See you all next year for SSHS10!
