No hook for landing, no catapult for take offs. Truly crazy. It was deemed unfeasible, couldn't really have any other planes on deck when the C-130 was coming and going.

JATO
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
JATO is an acronym (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/wiki/Acronym) for Jet-fuel Assisted Take Off. The term is used interchangeably with the (more specific) term RATO, for Rocket-Assisted Take Off. It is a system for helping overloaded aircraft into the air by providing additional thrust in the form of small rockets (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/wiki/Rocket). See also assisted take off (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/wiki/Assisted_take_off).

I stand corrected, and my apologies, the only thing we've (Airforce) ever called them were JATO's.

Don't worry man, the Navy has their own gay name for everything.
