Look closer. It's an M1 Garand. Top loading clip of 8 rounds. Eastwood's character in the movie was a Korean War vet. When the clip ejected, it makes a very distinctive "ping". For those that carried the M1, they might remember it as the "M1 Thumb" for those a little slow on Inspection Arms.

M14 used the bottom loading magazine.... the 30 round banana clip came later.

I've qualified on the M1, M14, M16A1, M16A2, M60 MG, .45 cal, 9mm, M203 Grenade Launcher and fired the .50 cal, 90mm Recoilless Rifle, 81mm mortar, 106mm Recoilless Rifle, 75mm Pack Howitzer, and 105 mm Howitzer. I also got to send one 105 mm tank round downrange. :D

Ermey got out of the US Marine Corps in 1972 .... the same year that I went into the US Army. Not counting 4 years as a cadet. :D

I became a member of AARP when I bought the MM in 2003. The dealer was offering an additional $500 off the price. The $15 annual membership fee seemed like a good trade. That one single transaction covered 33 years of AARP membership. I am good to go through 2036. :D
