How do you check the EGR valve? Is it only open allowing exhaust gases to enter the intake when the motor is cold? If I wanted to eliminate the EGR other than installing block of plates do I need to do some thing so it doesn't through a code ? Are there any negative ramifications in eliminating the EGR valve ?

The EGR allows exhaust gasses into the intake at part throttle operation and "COOLS" the combustion process by displacing oxygen in the fuel/air charge...if you defeat it you will have higher temps and the possibility of pre-ignition!!
You will also hurt your fuel economy some.....sounds nuts but it's true!!
I had my EGR function turned off at 30% throttle to eliminate part throttle surging!!:D
BTW, I think the EGR is off at WOT (open loop) and cold start (open loop) but not sure!!
I'd leave it alone unless it is causing problems.....

Interesting how the exhaust gases aid in better mileage. Surprising how it decreases internal manafold temps.

It doesn't decrease internal manifold temps it decreases combustion temps!!
Also, helps emissions and it will not hurt performance a bit provided the system is working right!!
Do you have some problem that you think may be EGR related??

Yes, I think I may have a problem related to the EGR valve. Even prior to the installation of the long tube headers I would smell exhaust gases smell like unburned fuel. I had no leaks in the exhaut system then or now. Bob & I installed new gaskets. That same week I switched over to ball flanges & had all welds checked. For this reason I can only think it is EGR related ?

The valve itself is pretty durable...maybe you have a leak in the tube that connects to your exhaust source...either at the valve or the other end??
A new Motorcraft EGR valve is only $82.79 plus shipping from Rock Auto. You may want to just get a new one if you think the old one might be bad?? Then you will at least know the valve is good!!

How about the fuel tank evap emmissions canister/hoses?
If you have a "fuel" smell and you have no exhaust leaks then I would be checking for a source of fuel.
