Looking through the garage, stashed back in the corner on a stand, I ran across a '69 351W 4V engine. Still intact, it was only produced for one year. Any ideas what this would be worth?

It's worth nothing, send it to me. I will offer you some cash for your clunker motor. :P

You got it. I'll even pay the freight to get it up there to you just so I can be rid of it.

Be aware with that engine, 60's 351's are short decks and are not compatible with the ones from 70's to present production. You will have a tough time finding distributors and proper balancers for them especially if you're planning on fuel injection. I've run into this a few years ago with Project White Trash from MM&FF magazine. Excellent engine but make sure you buy the right parts if you build it up.

Yep - same problem here. I've got a '68 302 windsor w/ 4V heads & 10.5:1 CR.
I haven't been able to give it away.

Interestingly, the carburator may be worth (a lot) more than the engine assembly. Make sure you know what it is, before you let it get away. You may have found a treasure.

I thought the "Cleveland" 351 was the desirable motor?

The 351 HP cars in 69-70 were mostly Windsors Hack.
The Cleveland ( mid 70 and up) was a later motor and with the HUGE intake ports of the 4v motor were not as good a street motor ( EXCLUDING the Boss351.... awesomeness personified).
The majority of 1969 Mach 1's were Windsor powwered. Their collectability and desirability right now make a 1969 351 W 4v VERY desirable... especially a complete #'s matching motor.

'69 was the first year for the 351W, it has the taller deck than a 302 and was available in both 2V and 4V versions. '70 was the first year for the 351 Cleveland, it was offered in both 2V and 4V versions, however in '70 the 351W dropped to 2V only. So if you have a 351 from '69, either 2V or 4V, it is a Windsor. If you have a 351 4V from '70 and up it is a Cleveland. If you have a 351 2V from '70 to '73 it may be either a Windsor or Cleveland. I believe '74 marked the end of the Cleveland with the introduction of the 351 Modified and 400, which was the taller deck height Cleveland style block. The 351M was basically a de-stroked 400. The 351W production continued up into the '90's, mostly used in pickup trucks. In the mid-'80's a 4V 351W was offered, but it was quite different from the early one due to changes for smog ports, combustion chamber size, valve size, etc.

Anyhow, thanks for the info Rich, I figured the real value would be to a classic Mustang restorer. I've been out of touch with that group for awhile so I didn't know how much they may have increased in value.

Do you have any Mark 7 parts that will work on a 1988 XR7?

Sorry, I let most of my MkVII parts go with the car.

Never knew the Winsor came as a 4 barrel. I had one (a 2 barrel) in my 73 Torino and frankly it was a dog.

Yep.... another reason for the rarity....

It was rated at 290 hp. I had a '69 Mustang with one, it was quite strong. Keep in mind, '73 was about the beginning of smog controls, almost everything was a dog.

Oh, and the 2V had something like 9.2 or 9.5:1 cr, the 4V had 10.5 or 10.9:1 (depending on where you read the specs from).

the 69 351w 2v or 4v block C9OE has a deck height of 9.480 verses 9.508 for 70s and up and in most cases the 69 blocks had a little thicker cylinders when sonic tested . I ran the 351w motors for years in bracket cars most of them were strokers. They made good solid motors with a set of after market heads.

take off the oil pan and see if it is a 4 bolt main. that will make it worth more. and if it has a x on it (either in the date code or some where else i dont remember) its a mexico block and its worth some type of money.

My comment was specific to the 351 powered cars and how the engine Brian has is valuable to someone looking to restore a Mach, or even a Grande.

It was not meant to imply that an R code car is less valuable than a M code.

Sorry I hurt your feelings, Bob. It was not intended.

Brian, back to the carb. Interesting that the August issue of MUSTANG TIMES (the MCA publication) has an article by Jon Enyeart, President of Pony Carburetors ( sales@ponycarburetors.com ) talking about the astronomical prices being fetched by some of those rare carbs.

It's nice to find treasure.....good luck with it. :)
