Putting high stall torque convertor on car. Need Tranny Cooler.

I got a high stall stallion torque convertor. I already ordered a B&M pan for a AOD/ AODE/ 4R70W transmission but I don't know what kind of tranny cooler I should get. I want something under $150 that will work. Any suggestions guys?

You absolutely need a trans cooler with a TC particularly living in FL. The B&M trans coolers are not effective - tried the largest and they are no good. Go for the "Long" trans cooler. DR sells them. It is by far the largest and best on the market. I rarely go above 180 degrees even in 98 degree weather. Also, leave your OEM trans cooler hooked up in series - it will help in cooling the trans.

With that cooler, the pan would not have been needed!
But you'll be adding more fluid and the big cooler will take even more, so it's not a bad idea.

I'll have to completely disagree with your assessment of B&M transmission coolers.
I have a B&M transmission cooler installed 'in-line' with my OEM cooler.
I installed it when I put in my Art Carr higher stall converter.
The B&M cooler has a thermostatically controlled fan to help keep things cool even when you are not moving in traffic and have no airflow.
I have never seen my transmission temperatures go over 185 degrees after I installed the B&M cooler.
This includes hot lapping it at the drag strip.
It will even come on while sitting in the waiting lanes with the engine off.
(I have it wired so that it can run with the engine off.)

This is what I have installed in front of my OEM radiator, behind the grille.

I was only referring to non-fan type coolers. You cann't beat the Long for $123 for effectivenesss.

I took the B&M unit I had on, off and replaced it with the Long unit ( with a name like Long... it's can't be wrong!!!! )
The new trans runs way cooler, but then again, it's rated at twice the GVW.......

But that B&M served me well for 40-50,000 miles!

Where is the best place to mount this cooler?

I mounted mine on the lower half of the radiator at an angle - not flat against the radiator.

Thanks guys! I decided on the TruMax meant for mild winters. It seems like a good unit and it is reasonably priced. I've seen the Ford Racing one before but I want something a bit heavier duty. Thanks again!

We have had cars running that Long cooler and converters upwards of 4500rpm who never see trans temps higher than 160. Just an FYI. Several have switched from the B&M coolers even with fans because the 180 plus temps they were seeing regularly scared them. The B&M stuff is great quality for sure though.

do you know of an add on temp/thermostat device that could be put in line?
I was thinking that we in the cooler areas, could have such a device inline that would allow the factory cooler ( Made by LONG, btw) to be "on" then when temps hit a set point the 2nd unit comes into play.

You can buy the cooler with an external weather thermal bypass valve. It is part #4739. This is the valve that Brian has photographed in his post. When the trans fluid is thick due to low temperature the valve bypasses the trans cooler.

I just installed the Long cooler from Dennis and I would say it is almost too efficient. Before I installed the bypass valve my temps were 120 to 135, and thats at 80 deg outside temp. After installing the valve the trans temp will get up to 180 and hold that temp plus or minus 2 deg. !!!!! It does take a while to get to 180 though. I don't think the valve is a 100 % bypass. Also, on the hot side of the cooler it's hot. And on the cold side it is completely cold. Take it for what it's worth, but a smaller cooler with the valve may be a better choice. But I'll stick with this one.

No... it's not 100%. It allows about 20% flow to maintain pressure.
