I am sure you have seen my thread about losing my grandfather... I come in to work today and have found that they are laying off the secretary (great friend of mine now) and that my name has been dropped. Not only do I feel absolutely horrible about losing my grandfather, but now my friend is losing her job, and I probably am as well. Besides drinking and smoking cigars, anyone have any ideas to help me cope with this? I just ate lunch and feel like throwing it up now because so many emotions are running through me!
Anybody know of any jobs in the New England area!?!?!?! haha
I am looking to revamp my resume, but I am waiting until this Thursday because I am taking my written EMT exam. If I get that, I am a certified EMT and I am sure that looks GREAT on a resume!
Thanks everyone, you guys are like a family to me and this is a great place to come and vent... Sorry I dump this s*** on you though!! hahaha

Dude, my heart goes out to you. Very sorry on the loss of the grandpa. If you are getting the EMT certification because you are looking for something different, my hat is off to you. I'm taking a similar path leaving behind test equipment leasing and going to nursing school here shortly. Maybe its time for a long roadtrip...take some time to reassess life

I am on a fire dept as a call fireman and have been for 7 years and I have done it on the side while maintaining a full time job. I have given thought to pursuing full time status in a town at some point, but need my emt... plus, having EMT on a resume looks great. I don't know where I will go from here, but I do know that I need to get there fast! I can't afford to be unemployed and I can't go without work! I WILL GO NUTS!!! hahaha... I am trying to keep a positive attitude and think "with ends come new beginnings".
This statement holds true with my grandfather... he died, but my sister who has been trying for quite awhile to have a baby is finally going to have one! So I am hoping with the death of my job, a new one will come around!

Breath...first...then look at it as an opportunity to pursue something you have been doing for 7 years. Plus you are not sure if they are going to let you go for sure right? Its just office chatter? Either way...prep for the test the best you can, give it your all and you should pass and get your EMT certification! Best of wishes and you never know...leo MAY just be there for you if you are down! Hehehehehehe

Man I'm sorry to hear this. Losing a family member is always hard. Nothing I can say will make you feel better other than time heals all wounds.
As for the Job, thats a whammy too. I worked at MCIWorldcom after I got out of the Army in 01. When they went down the tubes I lost my job with very little warning. I used that to get my engines going and become a Police Officer. Maybe loosing one job, and getting your EMT license will spur you onto a new direction in life.
just my two cents....

I can do burnouts all around town and the fire department would not only want you full time, they would be hiring!
The best cure for being down for me is two things. One go out to a random club and see a band. A lot of times locals do not have a cover charge, so all they are taking is your time. Let in something new and it's clears your mind because you must focus on something you've never heard before. You can also do this with seeing new movies, but the best way seems to be comedy. You have Sirius so listen to Raw Dog or Blue Collar. It helps me and usually puts me in a good mood in about 30 minutes.
That's all I can provide for ya.

Sorry to hear about your grandfather; my prayers go out to you and your family. For me the only way to cope with life's challenges is to give your burdens to the Lord. Stay busy and be around family and friends.

Unemployed.....I can finally say - been there, done that. It makes you feel so worthless, especially when married and your kids don't quite get why MC Donalds is now considered a luxury. Don't even get me started on how you feel standing in that awfull government office with your hand out wanting some cheese. I wish you the best Tom, I really do. I know plenty of people that have not felt ANY effect on the economy except the fact that most things are even cheaper to buy now so what's the problem??? Hard to imagine huh? They will feel it someday... Get a cheap hobbie fast to ease the thoughts in your head. Models cars and VERY loud music have helped me throughout the years quite well.

Thanks for sharing Tom. No magic bullet, but a lot of the previous posts were right on target. Keep positive. YOU ARE NOT YOUR JOB. You have value because you are you! That won't change. Keep talking to friends. Let EVERYONE know you're job hunting. Word of mouth is a good thing. You're in our prayers.
