View Full Version : Break into a Marauder Trunk in 7.5 Seconds
N40GL
09-02-2009, 07:22 AM
Most LEOs probably are already aware of this, but evidently you can break into a Crown Vic (and, therefore, a Marauder) trunk in 7.5 seconds. Watch the video here (http://www.troyproducts.com/FLVs/Trunk%20light%20plate/CVTrnkltplt.html). I learned last night that a Deputy out west had his MP5 stolen, along with a personal weapon and most of his uniform gear. Since our cars are often mistaken for police vehicles, we may eventually be similarly victimized.
Group buy information:
Ordered TODAY - 16 September 2009 - 1:07 PM EDT.
I've been advised to expect delivery drop-shipped from Troy Products in 7 business days. Stay tuned!

I agree and was thinking of that. However, there is some advantage (at least to me, perhaps others) to having one cut to fit, and ready to install. That's why I put this up and am investigating a group buy.

Just to play the devil's advocate here,, would it not be cheaper to just remove the handle inside the trunk??

No I definitely agree there. I'm betting it's not that pricey in a group buy anyway.

:D Exactly! Or stuff it up where it cant be grabbed! Could even go to home depot and get some brackets, bend them in a vice, drill a couple of holes...

I don't think the handle is the problem. It's what the little lanyard of the handle is attached to (the trunk release that is pretty exposed and the bad guys know where to grab). I think the LA County Sheriff would've done that, if that's all that's required.
I found one web source that wants $25.00 for a set of two. By the time I've fab'ed up my own, I've spent at least $25 of my time, plus some cost of materials to recreate the original.

They could have done it in less than 7.5 seconds by breaking the drivers side window and hitting the trunk release button.
How many people actually lock that anyway? I sure don't.
Damn, where's the Trunk Monkey when you need him???

I'm in for any group buy of this product. I actually DO keep my inside trunk release locked all the time, I just made a habit to hit the fob instead. But I've always thought the door panel could easily ripped off and the connector manually jumped.
Also, whether it's my 870 Tactical or any other long gun, it's in the trunk mounted locking rack during food stops, or WITH me in any hotel room or any overnight stop with my jump bag also. Anything else I'd consider unprofessional.
Sub guns must be a pain to secure; too big for the black box, too short for the rack.
We had a spate of break-ins to duty vehicles that stopped after a pair were caught, and mugshots released to the media afterwards showed the two VERY bruised and swollen faces of the offenders. All weapons and most ammo was recovered. Imagine that?!
I've even considered putting in the old Tremco lying in the garage, but our PATS pretty much negates the need. (Unless it's for a duty car, of course, where footbails occur.)

+1 Now its public on how easy it is to get into the trunk. I can fab something out of steel and bolt it up within a hour. Just sucks if someone attempts this because those reverse lamps are part of the entire panel and after just spending $$ for the S55 treatment, I think I would be more pissed at the damage then anything stolen out of the trunk.

Simple fix... remove the string attached to the pull handle.
Replace the nylon string with some 100+ LB steel wire fishing leader.
Then on the end of the leader {you see where this is going huh?}
attach a very large TREBLE HOOK!!!
Then you can DRAG the perp to the police station depending on how fast he can run.
FYI a fully grown man with a treble hook in his hand CAN RUN VERY FAST when pulled behind a MM or CV!

They can go ahead and break in. If I do carry my weapons in the car if I can't park where I can see it, I don't leave the car. That simple. If its something THAT important then get it to the destination with no stops. Also this is why I have insurance. **** happens.

The TROY items sound good. Just wondering about it being easier to just pick the trunk lock. I'll bet a real thin, long screw driver will enable you to gain quick access without having to BUST the backup light out. May try it tonight.
BTW, the weight of my trunk lid is about maxxed out what with a spoiler, and inside decklid panel with the godshead emblem on it and the torsion bars adjusted as far as they go.

Is it too late to change the design? I was thinking about the monkey and the coconut story where by you can catch a monkey by placing a small object inside a coconut. Once the monkey puts his hand into the hole, grabs the object and makes a fist he can't get his hand back out as the monkey is too dumb to let go of the object. The coconut is anchored by a rope to a tree or something.
CrownVic/Marauder design would have six metal triangles with a one way hinge arranged in such a way that once the reverse light was smashed and the hand went in you'd be unable to pull your hand back out unless you cut it off at the wrist.
Bonus: the "suspect" will still be there when you come back to your car, probably find that the car alarm isn't necessary.
This is the style I'd prefer to buy. Who's gonna fab some?

Just hang a bear trap inside the trunk lid.
Sure my idea is a bit harsh but very effective. The bear trap would get in the way of groceries and things. My design would sit flush, out of the way and totally unnoticed.

Hey, what's the best type and size drill bit to make the holes? I want to do this right the first time and I haven't drilled holes into anything other than wood or plastic.

You could simply remove the emergency release cable. I like to unplug the connector at the solenoid for extra protection when in questionable areas. It would be very easy to get to the trunk release button in the door.
