I've been looking for a 06' or newer Explorer 2WD 4.6 3V V8 to replace our mini van and Marauder (59,400 mile's). Something to tow with, camping, drive year round, etc..We have a buyer for the van and I just found the explorer we want,77,000 mile's,1 owner, original, it's at a Ford dealer 500 mile's from us though e-mails, picture's, phone conversation's the deal's very close. $13,100 for the explorer and they'll give us between $11,000 &12,000 in on trade. Not to bad I think, what do you think? Thank's Dale

Explorer's are very good suv's kind of rare to find a 2wd it should have a posi track and will not be the best in bad weather. I would look for a 4wd with the v8 2006 and up. anything 2005 and older will have the 5r55s trans they are good but known for wearing the case out were the OD and Int. servos are unless they have been updated with the brass bushing. If you do buy one with the 6 speed trans 6r60 make sure the pcm and trans control module are updated to the latest calibration. Also if you get awd or 4wd make sure all the tires are the same size and have the same tread left if not transfer case could be damaged. any questions sent me a pm

That's all we have up here is 4WD's it took a while to find a 2WD w/v8, I'm use to rwd in the winter, never owned a 4wd before they don't really intrest me. This Explorer I found does have the 6 spd I'll ask about the update calibration. Thanks

So your going to trade your MM with 59k and a mini van, mileage unknown for an SUV that has 18k MORE miles on it?????

And your going to pay some out of pocket???

I don't get it?

Van will be sold to sister inlaw for what we paid for it over a year ago. We love the Marauder but we can't afford to leave it parked 6 months out of the year, also we'll be insuring 1 vehicle not 2, and at least it's got a 4.6 v8!

the 3rd gen explorers had the 5R55E, not the 5R55S

the second gen's had the 5R55E as well on the 4.0 SOHC V6 models

Thunderace,
I know where you are coming from, last month I was considering the exact same thing (get rid of both cars for one), and CarMax offered me $11,000. What do I do, I arrange to buy a P71 so the Marauder can still sit during the winter, now got I got three cars instead of one. You might want to try to post it on eBay, especially if you have a clear title.

S or E both had the same problem with servo bores in the case that were fixed with brass sleeves kits

$11 or 12,000 for trade in value is a great deal . The people who traded theirs in (now mine) only got 8,500 for it and it had less miles.

ntd or RoyLPita, I talked with the dealer and they ran a report on the explorer it shows no problems with the trany nor was the pcm or trans control module updated. So should it be updated even thow there has never been any issues? Kinda like fixing something thats not broke. Thanks again!

For the trans recalibration most noticeably you will feel a bump when coming to a stop on 2nd to 1st shift. While this isn't a durability issue it's more about shift feel and timing. To be honest there really are not any common issues with the engine or trans. If its clean go for it sucks you have to get rid of the car stupid bad economy.

Dale there are a couple of good places to stay. you got a hilton its kinda pricey but very new and nice. the clock tower resort if you have little kids with i recomend this one very nice indoor water park. and Quality Suites are about the best ones i would go to. but if you want cheap and kinda nice red roof in. if you like to know more just let me know.
