I wouldn't call that welding, it looks more like melding. I had to fail some welds on the USS Carl Vinson today and they looked better than those. I would not attempt to shave those dingle berries down flush (inside the pipe), as that will only make things worse. But hey if they don't leak, they are doing thier job.

Definitely not Kooks welds. I have a custom set of 2 1/4 inch primary, 4" collector stainless headers on my race car Kooks built for me. They do top notch TIG welds, thats definitely someone trying to MIG those babies....

did you say 2.25 primaries? holy crap!!

Jason White

Yeah, they are a custom stepped set from 2"-2.25 to 4" collector. My 412" SBF has Yates heads, all-aluminum, dry-sump, with 2 stages of nitrous makes 960hp on motor and approx 16-1700hp on both stages. I shift at 9,200rpm which is why the headers need to be BIG....LOL

Im back.
that means no MIG tomorrow @ work. hah and it also means that if i leave them like that it will eventually break.
here we go now.
just hope TIG welds arent that expensive.

I'm wondering why you cant grind out the inside?? The inside like that will hurt flow a lot. I know nothing really about welding, but that doesn't look at all like a proper job.

I'll try and give a short, down and dirty explaination. What has happened is the welds have heated up, and almost blown thru, the pipe wall. If you grind out what is there, you take out what little bit of pipe wall is left holding that "stuff" together. Crap, that wasn't really short.

Wow you were not kidding when you said they looked bad earlier. Definitely not like the welds on mine. Wonder what the reasoning was for that? Mine had a crack but nothing that required that kind of work. I hope your able to find a good local exhaust shop to clean them up for you. Not sure what it would cost though.

CBT i dont understand, do you mean that the weld from the outside went trough the metal all the way to the inside? and it was never welded inside.

exactly, a form of "blowthrough"

There was prolly a crack there and the weld was to hot and was blowing into the pipe. And thats what your seeing

Headers pipes are thin, just looks like they ran the welds a little too hot. If they don't leak, save the money of trying to make them look purty and just run them because the more you grind and weld on something, the weaker it gets.
