View Full Version : My Marauder got mashed!
Joe Walsh
10-29-2009, 09:32 AM
Yep!
This morning I'm sitting at a traffic light less than a mile from my house when I get HAMMERED from behind by a big azz Chevy Truck.
I saw him pull up behind me in my rearview mirror, then when I looked away....BAM!
My coffee cup spews hot coffee all over me, the front seats and console.
He hit me so hard I thought that he had gotten rear ended by another vehicle!
I get out spewing 4 letter words like a sailor, other guy gets out and starts saying: "I must have hit the gas pedal instead of the brake."
NO ***** SHERLOCK!!!
He drove me into the Chevy Cobalt in front of me and I messed up his rear bumper with my license plate
:mad2:............:censor:.... .........:mad2:
Rear end is mashed.
Trunk lid is bent up, rear valence is toast! (spoiler is still intact, I can't get the trunk open to see what the condition of my custom trunk lid liner is.)
He drove the rear fenders into the rear doors based on the matching paint chips from the rear fender - door impact area.
The fenders must have 'rebounded' because the rear doors can still be opened.
Front license plate bracket is wasted, front valence has scratches and indents in it.
I'm so friggin' pissed and so sick to my stomach at the same time.
The car was almost 7 years old and was pristine.....14,500 miles.
I can't even look at the Marauder to take pictures of the damage...:bigcry:
Is the rear valence with the embossed "Marauder" still available from Mercury?
Now I've got to wrestle with his insurance company...:shake:

Sorry to here that. I hope the car can be fixed properly. Make sure that you get checked out, it was a hit from behind that injured my spine permanently in my neck. Any stiffness, pain, tingling or any odd feelings can be the begining of bad thing in the future. Get checked out!
OMG!!! Joe I am so sorry to hear this!
Thank god you are ok.
I believe the rear bumper covers are still available at the dealer. Nate just had his replaced not too long ago.

Oh man Joe that sucks!!!
+1 on getting checked out - us old farts still think we are indestructable but we ain't!!
Get checked out and follow whatever the doctor tells you. An injury to the neck/back from this type of hit will be slow to show itself but get progressively worse with time becoming very painful and permanent!
The car will be fixed and as good as new - let me know if you need any help choking the "cooperation" out of anyone that needs it!!

Ouch!, Insure that you get physically checked out and secure an Attorney straight off.
At the very lease you maybe able to collect an amount to off set what the insurance people won’t cover!
I have seen both front and rear valences, front license plate bracket on the net as well as ebay!
Wish you well and good luck

What the H3LL is it with ^^^^^ this excuse. Seems to be happening with much more frequency anymore. Frickin' idiots with big feet I guess.
Dayum Joe .... I am really sorry to hear this. :( Glad to know that you weren't injured. Suggest you get fully checked out by the doc in case you start with stiffness in the neck or the back.
You should be commended for your self-restraint in not adding Manslaughter to the cussing sailor drill. ;) :seesaw:
Hope you are able to get your MM back in good condition without too much hassle.

Joe,
I am so sorry to hear of this mishaps. Just make sure that the Insurance Co doesn't force you to get Keystone parts. They may be OK for avg DDs, but NOT for our MMs. I have seen their 'quality' reman. parts up close & personal.

My first thoughts are that I hope you are totaly okay health wise and hope nothing hit's you down the road from this!
Take the Marauder to the best Ford shop around and make him and his insurance pay to no end to make shure your Baby is as good as new again! Hell make then say the only way to match the paint is to do the entire car back to show room finish! Stick it to them like you got it stuck to you!

That sucks! I am always afraid of driving my nice cars in traffic in the NoVA area for this reason! I see the results of so many fender benders what seems like almost every day, commuting.
I had my rear bumper cover hit-and-run by a truck while parked last year and I made the body shop replace their hackneyed putty-repair job with a new bumper cover after bringing the car back twice. They got a new OEM cover through a local ford dealer for $250, the body shop's price, not retail (I think retail is over a grand but the body shop won't pay anywhere near that for it)
I would want a new OEM cover and not used, these covers sag SO bad after a couple years
Good luck getting it fixed up. I can tell you where not to go in the Silver spring area based on the horrible work they did on my MM

Looking at it from a body shop's point of view...It doesn't look too bad*...I drove it home...It is definitely repairable.
Airbags didn't deploy, the Meg's tips look intact, rear quarters don't look buckled, Left rear tailight is perfect, right rear taillight is scratched, sitting crooked and seperated from the rear quarter... but is not shattered!
Rear trunk lid is toast....kinked up enough that I can reach in the trunk and the lower portion of the trunk lid got pushed into the trunk area, rear bumper cover is destroyed.
I haven't opened the trunk because I probably won't get it closed again.
*Of course to me...it looks horrible!

Joe,
Sorry to hear this news, but I am glad you're OK.
Just be careful if they do want to repair it, not only for the actual parts selection but also for the depreciation which you will now incur due to the collision. I hate to state the obvious, but your pristine baby has now been in a [severe] accident, thus significantly reducing its future resale value as a collectible vehicle. You may want to speak with a lawyer in regards to this, as you may be able to recoup some extra money, beyond the repairs, due to the condition and rarity of your Marauder. If you know of any car collectors, this may also be a question for them.

Man, I am so sorry to hear this. Hope you are still feeling OK, though. As for the accident, I have a question: When you were driven into the car in front of you, were you left on the hook for his damage? Here, it doesn't matter how much space we leave between cars or how fast the guy that hits us was travelling. If we hit the car in front of us as a result, we're at fault for that one. Makes no sense whatsoever, but that is how it works up here (another reason I want a camera in my car - I intend to be the first to take one of these cases to court!).
In your case, something like that would just add insult to injury.

One of my old clients works at True To Form in Laurel, he seems to know his stuff real well. Another old client of mine owns General Auto Body & Paint in College Park and did the work to my Mustang ($4k worth of damage for $2k lol). I know Apple Ford does a lot of vehicles, I think that might be the safest bet to go with.

............I'm so friggin' pissed and so sick to my stomach at the same time.
.............................. .........I can't even look at the Marauder to take pictures of the damage...:bigcry:............. ......
I know how that feels, but my wreck was my own fault. I would have horked if I had anything in my stomach at the time.
The front and rear bumpers that are unique to the Marauder are definitely available, but his insurance company is going to choke on their own tongues when they see how much they cost. They cost about three times what a normal CV or GM bumper would run them.
You should plan for being without the MM for a good long while. Whatever body shop you choose will likely have to wait a while on the bumpers to arrive (and other parts that are unique to the MM). Mine was out of service for six or seven weeks.
Glad you seem to be OK. YOur MM did it's job protecting you from that truck. I am so freaking paranoid when I drive around town here it's not enjoyable to me any more.

Really sorry to hear about this. As others have said, be sure to get checked out medically. If you don't, then later on you start having back problems or neck pains, you'll be in a pickle. Plus, if there is any medical claim the insurance company is a lot more flexible with claims & settlement.
If they want to a use reproduction bumper cover don't worry too much, nobody will ever know. Just make sure the body shop knows they will have to do a little prep work to remove overflow at the mold seams.

Oh Nooooo Joe!! My heart just sank when I read what happened to your beautiful car. I know how well you took care of it (and how much it means to you) It makes me sick to think about it! Of course the fact that you walked away without serious injury is the first priority, but I can imagine your outrage and despair at what it did to your car. It's just everyone's worst nightmare. We can't necessarily go out and replace these cars with another one.
My heart goes out to you, Joe. I'm just so sorry! Let's hope she's all put back to her former glory very soon. Knowing you, all will be properly taken care of. Best of luck...and keep us posted please!

Sorry about your car. That really sucks, especially with the mileage being so low. I hope you're doing ok too and that they're able to fix your car and not write it off.
I was in an accident earlier this year with mine. I'd definitely expect it to be out of service for a month or so. By the time that insurance comapnies did their thing, parts were ordered work was done it was just over a month with mine.
Those bumper covers are not cheap for our cars. I had to have my front one changed, and the price was just insane for the front bumper cover. I can give you pricing, but Canadian retail prices won't mean much in the US. We get hosed pretty bad up here parts wise.
I hope everything works out the way you want it to.
I about puked when I read this. I am so sorry for your car, but really glad you weren't hurt. I've had my MM for only 3 months and I have never been so aware of other traffic as I am with this car - And i speed less, tailgate less... Really just because I think Marauders are so damn cool, and well they don't make 'em any more.
I hope one way or the other you are back behind the wheel of a nice Marauder soon enough.

Joe Walsh this is terrible news. I am glad to hear you are up and about. Take everyone's advice and see a doctor. My mom was in a bad crash in the 70's and she felt fine for a while then the whip-lash set in. I remember her being in a lot of discomfort. Luckily for you pain meds are better now, but lets hope you don't need them.
Hope you got a police report and I reiterate the advice as given about the car parts and lawyer stuff. Hope to see you and your car soon.

Front bumer cover scratches and 'rocket launcher' energy absorbing bumper that imprinted through the bumper cover.

Matching paint chips from the rear quarter and the rear door...I'd say that the rear quarter moved forward "just a little bit." Then it rebounded back.
Looks like a slight kink in the rear quarter panel where it 'wraps' around the rear door opening.

I had similar, but slightly less damage to my rear end. Self inflicted in my driveway on black ice last winter (at about 5mph). About $1k to replace the RH tail light, fix the trunk, replace the plastic above the bumper. I won't recommend the repair shop due to the quality of the repair.
I'm seen alot worse come out looking better than new. I don't think you will have any problems getting her fixed as long as you find a good body shop. Just make sure your OK it's easier to fix car's than people

Insurance question.
If I get two estimates for repairing my Marauder, one at the body shop that his insurance company recommended*,
and one at a body shop highly recommended by a fellow member...(which is a Mercedes Benz approved independent shop)
Do I have to utilize the shop with the lowest estimate?
Or am I free to choose whichever one I want?
*The shop that they recommended is a local Ford dealer with a good reputation and is also an SVT dealer, so I'm sure they've repaired their share of Mustangs, Lightnings and Cobras.

That's 100% correct Joe it's your option on where you wanted your car fixed no matter the price. The first shop my car was towed to the Geico claim adjuster said it was totaled. That was BS he was being lazy and didn't want to do the leg work to do the estimate. The second shop used a different claim adjuster and BAAAAAM. I'm back cruising in my baby. I have a question about 'diminished value'....as I have not yet addressed this with the guy's insurance company.
Does it only apply to a collectible car?
Will I have to make the argument that a Marauder is a future collectible?
Also, How can I determine the amount that the vehicle depreciated due to it being involved in an accident?
Does CarFax have a formula that they use?

You can get them for diminished value! it is the lost amount say if you were to trade youre car in at a dealer and they say we will give you 8000.0 trade in OK Then you tell them oh the car has been in a accident and they well we can only give you 6000.00 that leaves you with a 2000.00 loss and that is what you can go afer them for. make sense this is whatI do for a living.

Joe remember don't get caught up in the hype of a dealership much less a SVT dealer cause for what I have seen most of the time they do shotty work. A regular body shop might do the best work like in my case.
Nate, I appreciate that you said most of the time! I manage a BS at a large Ford dealership were I live and I will put my repairs against the best shops in ST Louis, on qaulity, time of repairs, and customer service. So not all Dealerships do shotty work. Iam very picky on the cars my guys repair and them knowing that probably keeps them on there toes. I have done multiple repairs on several veh's for another member and he has always been very pleased with the work. Oh and dealers arent always the most expensive I have seen lots of ests from independent shops that were higher then my ests. Not all dealers do bad work and vs verse just my .02!

I picked up my Marauder from the body shop yesterday.
It looks good!
I really haven't had a chance to look it over because it got covered in road salt on the drive home....:mad2:
(We had some snow over the weekend and the roads got salted heavily.)
Now it has been raining like crazy for 12 hours!
I will give it a thorough inspection once I have a chance to wash it on a sunny day.
My only complaint right now is that my once "brand new OEM leather" smelling interior, now smells like a paint booth with a noticable solvent odor...:bigcry:
Glad to see you got it back Joe!

Glad to hear Joe! Yeah that smell will be gone quick. Did you get an extra from the diminished value?
