View Full Version : Marauderville at Panther Plant.

I was thinking about this for a year or so. Since we have been informed on the closing of the plant that made our cars why don't we have Marauderville there? Not only that, but let's get everyone for all of the websites to join. Not only Marauder's, but anything on the Panther platform. Old or new.
Marauders, Grand Marq's, Town Cars, Crown Vics.... let's invite everyone. We could make one huge going away party out of it. Maybe meet the people that helped create the car, go drag racing, have cookouts and burnout contest all day long at the plants parking lot. We could maybe make national news on what a following the car(s) have created for us and how we refuse to let it die.
Even if it's not a Marauderville, we could sure make it one huge event. Even if it's for a day or a weekend. We could call it Panther Pileup or Final Run... I don't know.
No matter what it would be the biggest day ever and the most important day for the Panther. Could someone post on crownvic.net or any other related website?
Thoughts? Suggestions? Could this work?

just double checking! And you already missed CVN's tour of STAP, i dont know if they are going to be doing anymore tours
Great idea Dom!
If they aren't doing tours we can just crash the joint and burn up the parking lot. :burnout:

I like these ideas. As long as I don't have to compete in topless volleyball. Nobody needs to see that.

If we can make some contacts with Ford we should lock in a date. Let's get magazine's to be there too. Motor Trend, Hot Rod, Car and Driver.... whoever. The more I think about it the bigger it can be. We owe it to these guys. This can be huge.
Who else wants to do this? Who should I contact for this at Ford? Can someone do this?

First post Ive read from you I agree with in 5 years. We could try to get the folks at mcm, crownvic.net and grandmarq.net to join up as well. Any MM.net guys living near the St Thomas plant interested? Where the hell is St Thomas anyway? (yeah, I know its in Canada.) I recommend it be in warm weather (like August/Sept). I read its closing the thrid quarter of 2011, wouldnt 2011 be a better year to do it? Either way, sounds like a good idea.

Maybe we can get steve babcock and kenny brown to make it out.

I just spoke with Ken Ward, the Plant Manager at STAP, and he seemed quite receptive to the idea of [at least] a get-together on the property. He asked us to call Jeff Croff at (519) 637-5201 when we decide on our plans. I thanked him graciously and let him know we would be calling.

Hahahaha...you know what I meant!
I just mapped out my house to STAP. 5-hr drive @ 319 miles. Not too bad. The sad part is, it's a 72-mile boat ride due directly north across Lake Erie. I wonder if they'll have a ferry dock built by next year by my house?! That'd rule.
I posted over at CVN (one of the responses, should be on page 2):

I'd like to see this happen. If it looks like this is a go, I will likely not do POTP in 2010. This would be way more important.

Try their promotions department or PR office. Back in the day when I owned an SSR, I helped get a gathering off the ground to tour the plant the last week of production for the SSR. It turned out pretty nice, they not only set up a VIP tour, but there was a nice lunch provided and the owners who attended were given cool gift bags that included a small die cast car. The owners the next day - a Saturday - held a party to thank the plant workers and there was a great turnout. This event was patterned after a similar idea that Prowler owners did when the Prowler assembly plant closed.
Also, contact Steve Babcock not only to invite him to the event, but he has inside contacts that could be very helpful.
Contact the editors of the Ford magazine they send to owners, too.
As far as car magazines, send invites out to all of them that cater to Ford owners, especial Ford specific ones.
Start threads all over Ford boards, including pickup sites like National Harley Truck Owners and National Lightning Owners.
Good luck. I think this is a terrific idea!

I could do that it is only 5 hour drive for me. Please keep in mind that travel to Canada is best done with a passport and plans need to in place at least 6 months prior to event to allow some to aquire a passport. I know flying requires one not sure about driving rules.

Do we want this in 2010 or 2011? I think 2011 would be a better idea, but I do not know what would be best for Ford. If they say 2010 or nothing I am all for 2010. I might even ask my drummer to make a documentry on this with me since he is a film major.
Here is a question: Should we enforce the rule that your car must have been made at the plant? I am leaning towards yes, but if we let it go we will have more people show up. People with Crown Vics from the 50s might show up, but to my knowledge the plant in St. Charles has been in existance for around 20 years, not 60.
Events to consider:
Drag Racing
Car show
Cookouts
Speeches from designers
Tour? ...so the plant will still have to operating, even if it's the final week.
Burnout contests
Live music :D
Does anyone think we can get Panthers to the show that are still in use? This might be difficult. Like get a Chicago Police car there, Detroit Taxi, Town Car Limo... all still in service with decals and all. I think it would be great if we could have a police car section at the show from cars all across the country.
What date or year for that matter would work? Should we call and ask first? They might have big plans in 2011 and couldn't host the event, 2010 will probably be easier on them. Just thinking.

The 2010 vacation schedule is up to me here. Does anyone have any inkling as far as a date for this thing is concerned? I know it's way early but like, can we rule out certain months so I can at least put a week of vacation in the "possible" months? June 4th-6th is Carlisle...are we trying to avoid that general block of time?
Just thinking out loud here.

When we drove to Detroit to see Lidio a couple of years ago, we went through Ontario so we could stop at STAP for a picture of Blackbird in front of the plant.
If we have any hope of the plant being involved, they really need to drive the date. If they're not interested but would let us use the parking lot for a car show, for example, I presume the date would matter less to them.
I would suggest continue to flush out ideas and then have a designee call Jeff Croff and float the concept by him and let that conversation drive the date.

I set the tour up last year for CVN and OQCVO group with a help of Gary V. (Production Manager) at STAP and would be willing to help in any way again this year. I think it's a great idea and would definitely like to see it happen.
Previously it was always done in early to mid June on a Friday but most people spent the whole weekend there. We had a tour on Friday morning and afternoon then would drive to Sparta for drag racing in the evening. The track is about half hour away, maybe less.
Perhaps we could spend an entire day at the plant on Friday for tour, car show, pictures, interviews, etc. Then on Saturday rent out a track for racing? I think if we get enough people, it should be possible.
First thing that has to be done is deciding on a date. I think if 2010 is possible, we should do it then. Who knows what will happen in 2011. I would rather do it a year early then not be able to do it at all. Ones we pick a date, we need to run it by Ford to see if it will work with them.
One thing that I would like to stress is if you don't have a passport, apply for one ASAP. Don't wait until there are 3 weeks left before the tour. Last year several people waited until the last minute and weren't able to come because their passport didn't arrive in time.

Someone local to the plant would be the best contact. They would know whats around to put the event together. Motel, points of interest and places to eat.

What a great idea, the plant, the track, hundreds of Marauders!! Hey the benefit of living where I live...I am less than an hour from the plant! I don't have any contacts but could help with logistics etc. We would want to make sure it was a weekend where Sparta (St. Thomas Dragway) didn't already have something booked. They rent the track Monday thru Friday. They usually have test and tune on Saturdays and if there are events they are usually run them in conjunction (ie. Ontario Pontiac Club + Test and Tune, Mustang Day + Test and Tune, etc.). I have sent them a note to see if there any Saturdays next summer not spoken for...

I will make the contacts that I can, but as far as the area is concerned we will need locals to find the best hotels, restaurants... exc.

I did trade e-mails with Dave Mathers [sttdrags@skynet.ca] at the track and asked about Saturdays next summer. He confirmed they don't rent the track on Saturdays and they have 30 clubs already looking for slots next summer. He also mentioned they will run up to 4 clubs on a Saturday and they get lots of runs in. It will obviously depend on how many cars we are expecting. Just something to think about in the planning process.

I am local in terms of being in the same province but STAP is about 2.5 hours from my house. I would be willing to organize it though. Maybe W4LTD wants to help since he already had communication with Ford. Send me a PM and we will share notes.
As far as a hotel goes, there is a Best Western right off the highway a mere 5 minutes or less away from the plant. That's where everybody stayed in the past. Ones we get it squared away with Ford and pick the date, I can give them a call and see if we can get discounted room rates since there is gonna be a lot of people coming.
Speaking of good places to eat, I am not sure on that one. Previously everyone went where they wanted in the city. Most of the restaurants are on the same street in St. Thomas so there really isn't a lot to chose from. lol

I suggest that those interested in hosting this event as a "Marauderville" submit a proposal to the owners. There are requirements that have to be met before any chance of the Annual meeting can be discussed. The Marauderville meet is our "premier" event of the year and plans have to be submitted and approved before we can choose the site of MV 8. If, however, someone would like to make this a regional meet, go for it

You mean submit it to the owners of this website? I am not exactly a regular here so I am not too familiar of how stuff is done around here. I will set it up with STAP officials and post the details on CVN. If a local on this site could pick it up and organize it on this end, it would be appreciated. Regardless, STAP 2010 will be happening so it's up to you guys if you want to make Marauderville out of it.
Also, I got another email today from STAP and we will plan to get this done in June. Right now the number of spots for the tour is 40 (20 morning and 20 afternoon). If more people decide to come we may have to spread it out onto 2 days. Thursday and Friday I am assuming.

AHHH i wish i could go
You should try and miss Carlisle buy at least 2 weeks so people have a chance to regroup. Over 30 cars just mrom the Marauder group made it last year. Plus a lot of other Panthers were also there.

The STAP event sounds great but there are some concerns about timing. If we are thinking of June 2010, we need to look at the calandar guys. There is a lot going on already. It would be a shame to force people to fore go any of the other planned events. First and foremost is Carlisle, our inaugural event....... the first time '03-'04 Marauders will be in a class of our own! I'd hate to have participants syphoned away from this event.
In May, we have the New Hampshire Motor Speedway/ Classic Car Show event at Loudon. Several members are already planning to attend that. And hopefully more of you will consider joining us. (I'll bump that thread with the itinerary/dates etc.)
Going up to Canada to St. Thomas is something I would love to do as well. But as I am committed to attending Carlisle (and am the organizer of the New Hampshire meet), I would regretfully miss out if it's in June. Is there any other time this could happen?

Carlisle is June 4-6, we could do STAP on June 25th which would provide a 2 week break. I am sure there will be events happening every month of the summer and trying to accommodate all of them would be next to impossible.

June of 2010 is right around the corner; better get Passports GOING! :D LOVE this idea though Dom! WAY TO GO - the Panther Pile Up! I'll "Pile On!" as best I can; GREAT IDEA!! Good to see the furry of interest and RESPONSE here on this. (It will help take the "Sting" out of this sad ending to an ERA of great RWD Luxo/Sport/CRUISIN' Mo' Chines!! ) This could be a killer gathering for sure!
Just keep us all posted here as you have and lock in details as we can. Thanks!

Would have been nice to see the last car roll off the line in 2011. All these events right in a row Kentucky-April, NH-May, Carlisle-June might make it difficult for planning vacation time from work for some. Any reason if this can't be done when the last cars roll at STAP in 2011, could it be July/Aug/Sept? What regional meets are there during the months of July-Sept?

:beer:TRUE! it'd beat neat as heck to see the last of 'em rolling out O' da "Fat-tree!" in '11 but I'll do my best to support either year!

As some of the other people have stated, why not try to do it around the time of the Woodward Dream Cruise? It could be one big thing, do STAP first then right to Woodward or vice versa.Just tossing that out there. Regardless I'm subscribing. I know I have a wedding to go to in June, I'm just hoping it won't be the same time. I'll be keeping watch on the date. Also watching to see if Steve Babcock will be in attendance, maybe try to get my dash autographed :-DMaybe see if we could get Lidio, Jerry, etc to come too, that would be cool

actually were not that lucky here $5 a gallon + how much is gas in Saudi Arabia ?
When we drove to Detroit to see Lidio a couple of years ago, we went through Ontario so we could stop at STAP for a picture of Blackbird in front of the plant.
If we have any hope of the plant being involved, they really need to drive the date. If they're not interested but would let us use the parking lot for a car show, for example, I presume the date would matter less to them.
I would suggest continue to flush out ideas and then have a designee call Jeff Croff and float the concept by him and let that conversation drive the date.
I was planning a similar route, through upper NY, into Ontario Stop at STAP, hit Lidio in Detroit to finally get the MM tuned by the Man himself, and back through the lower lakes via Chicago or something. Awesome road trip, guess I finally have impetus to make the journey.
Wouldn't it be great...
If Ford would sell the plant to a private firm (like GM had planned to do with selling Saturn to Penske) and the plant stayed on line producing the Panther chassis a few more years!
Although I hate to see it end too, I'd rather it be snuffed like a candle in the night, than have it limp on on life support producing horrible knockoffs that insult the memory of the vehicles that came before. That is, if the plant worker get a fair deal, hope they don't get the raw end of the stick.

Wow and I thought $3+ was bad, I guess London has it worst, its in double digits I think. And doesn't Canada measure liquid by litre or was that already calculated?

So far, they're throwing around the date June 2010, probably gonna be called "Panter Pileup". Should look good on a Tee Shirt. I wonder if Blackened300A is thinking about a design. . .
Oh and yeah, already have the application filled out, just gotta get that passport photo and then send out for my pass port.

I am holding my passport right now quivering with anticipation for the announcement that MV8 will be at STAP! This would be so huge and such a fitting farewell event for STAP.I could support that IF it were in the month of Sept. It would be even better if it could be scheduled to coincide with the last car rolling off the assembly line in 2011. We could provide an honor guard of Panther platform cars. The last car could then be driven between rows of Panthers as a final salute. Wow, that would be quite the finale!

So June 18th and only 40 people can have a tour?
40 spots is all that was allotted to us last year. It will probably be the same this year. Unless of course there is more interest then we may have to split this up into 2 days. The tour takes about hour and a half and they have 2 tours a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon with 20 people per tour. As you can imagine, they don't want large crowds of people walking around the plant.

Is this the actual event or is that just a random tour?
I am not sure what you mean. This is the same event that's been held for the past 8 years or so. CVN has had an annual plant tour there every summer.
If you are asking whether or not this is Marauderville, the answer is no. This has no relation unless whoever organizes Marauderville wants to merge the 2 events. In such case, send me a message and we will go from there.

Serge

There is no relation to the Panther pileup. Like I said before STAP has been held for several years now and is an annual event. It is open to all Panther owners.
Motorhead350
01-25-2010, 07:29 PM
Alright. Should we set The Panther Pileup for this date or make it later?
a_d_a_m
01-25-2010, 07:35 PM
I'm already registered for STAP on June 18th, whether or not it's called the Panther Pileup. Being that they can only take 40 per day, it seems like it would be necessary to do 2 days of tours to make a large-scale event happen.
Serge
01-25-2010, 07:37 PM
I spoke with a STAP rep and 40 people is the initial plan. If there is more interest, we will try to work something out.
Motorhead350
01-25-2010, 08:11 PM
Even if only 40 people can go per tour that doesn't mean 200 can't stay in the lot for the Panther Pileup does it? I am fine with making everything a go on this date, but I want to be sure everyone else is on board and inform anything media related that would be interested on the date too.
scruff
01-25-2010, 08:28 PM
the parking lot at STAP can accomdate 200 + cars easy and i think this event is open to all panther cars as was said earlier the more the merrier but the inside tour is limited to 40 unless somethings change?

Should we confirm or ask if this date should be The Panther Pileup?
Is this enough time?

I wouldn't bother, I was mostly kidding. How many parking lots (at car plants, nonetheless) have electric outlets? Plus a stage, PAs, and lugging equipment. Screw it.
I know a band from that area called The Roman Line who are pretty good. Maybe I'll see if they could play the night of the 18th or 19th at an area bar or something.

All the spots are gone but 13 people never got back to me to confirm that they will be there so you can take you chances and show up and maybe there will be an open spot on the tour. If not, you can always just come to the meet and racing afterward. On Saturday many people also plan a visit to the Ford museum in Dearborn.
