View Full Version : The rest of the story, aka THE NEW MOTOR IS IN!

We have found several things that caused the demise of my motor,
1)My intercooler pump stopped, not sure when but I'll bet not too long before it left.
2) The existing tune had the a/f at around 12:1 at high RPMs
3) The combination of those 2 things without the IAT2 mod and the FRPS mod probably were enough to kill it.
4) Probably not related but the MAF was almost flatlined. Replaced w/ Diablosport Mafia

So for the good news, I haven't been able to open the graph but it appears after talking to Ryan at Injected Engineering last night I am 50-70 HP higher on the scale with the new motor/tune.
I pick it up 12/15 in Atl.

Great news, Gary. Sounds like a reduction of pulley size for more power but no new tune. Personally, if that is the case; I find that stupid on the part of the seller and criminal if sold in that set up without a heads up to you, the buyer. I had an intercooler pump stop as the power connection failed. It taught me to turn the key and listen for the pump before I start the car, every time. At the track checking before every run would be a good idea. Dennis

good luck.

Congratulations, Gary! To me, that original Trilogy kit tune vs the new custom tune graph really tells a story, that I have seen replayed time and time again with different Trilogy MM's around metro Atl.

Remember we talked about that very subject before you bought the car? Anyway, water under the bridge now, so, time to enjoy your new found power! :coolman: See you Tuesday!

Whats the IAT2 mod and FRPS mod?

boatmangc

My understanding is the IAT2 adds another IAT further downstream in the plenum which gives the ECU a)actual temperature of intake temperature and b) a comparison with IAT 1 reading which is underhood or outside air temp depending on whether the car is moving or setting in traffic.
FRPS is a boost sensitive fuel rail pressure sensor as opposed to normal FRPS which are vacuum sensitive.

Nice to see your luck is taking a turn for the better. Good luck with the new power plant.

IAT2 mod is simply relocated IAT to the intake manifold downstream of the intercooler/heat exchanger. It allows the tune to retard timing based on the actual temperature of the air charge. It is called IAT2 because that terminology is used on the Cobra, which has 2 IAT sensors (one in this location, another at the MAF similar to the MM). The MM PCM doesn't have an input for the 2nd IAT sensor so IAT1's input is rewired to the new location. The way the Trilogy kit works as originally installed is ok as long as everything is functional because it estimates the IAT2 temperature based on the IAT1 temperature. A lot of early factory-installed turbo and SC cars used this technique. But if you don't have any kind of warning that the intercooler system has no fluid flow then the IAT2 approach becomes more critical. I believe the early FI systems did have some kind of secondary sensor which indicated a problem in this area at least with a warning light.

heres where the IAT needs to go.

thats in the back of the lower intake on the drivers side.

Precisely why my motor went away when the intercooler pump stopped flowing coolant, that plus the A/F ratio being at 12:1 @ WOT rpms

That's one option. For an Eaton conversion or for a Whipple/KB it's less work to just splice into the OEM IAT2 Cobra sensor. No drilling or tapping holes, just wiring.

If I had a Trilogy, I'd try to find someone who has the "official" IAT2 conversion from Trilogy and try to duplicate that setup, just to be consistent.

But what you've got there works just fine, it's just a different standard from what everybody else is doing. Everybody else meaning Ford Cobra, Kenne Bell, Whipple, and Trilogy.

From what I've heard, the Trilogy upgrade required a different discharge plate, not the lower manifold.

What you've got is the way Zack did it, and it works just fine. Just different from the "standard" way. It's probably easier than the official way though, since the Cobra sensor has an o-ring seal and machining has to be precise for o-rings to seal.

Aric used the IAT2 from the Lightning from what I understand.

So using a FRPS from an 03-04 Cobra would be better than using the stock Marauder sensor? Zack already did the IAT mod to my car before I bought it.

from my understanding, you just have to make the factory mm frps see boost instead of vac.

It would see both if routed to the vaccum lines. So its in the tune?

It has to be connected to the fitting where the Trilogy connects to the boost gauge, which is after the blower. The standard connection is between the throttle body and the blower, which will see vacuum but not boost. The tune also needs to be adjusted.

And it uses a Lightning sensor, like you've got. Looks like it's easier for a do-it-yourself Trilogy mod to mount it in the manifold. It's easier for a Eaton conversion to just re-wire and use the stock Cobra IAT2 sensor.

They use the same FRPS, it's just the hose connections that need changed. If Zack did the IAT mod he probably did the FRPS mod too.

my new blower came with a cobra sensor still mounted in it. maybe ill hook it up that way, but then id have a hole in my manilfold to plug. ill prolly just leave it like it is
