Many consider Frank Sinatra (me among them) to be the greatest pop singer of the last century, and certainly the most prolific recording artist. In any case, today is the date Frank was born, and Sirius radio is doing a 24hr nothing but Sinatra program with lots of folks doing guest spots and telling anecdotes about the great singer's carrier. We've been listening since early morning. :)

He is definitely the greatest.

Frank Sinatra's voice is pop music history. [...] Like Presley and Dylan — the only other white male American singers since 1940 whose popularity, influence, and mythic force have been comparable — Sinatra will last indefinitely. He virtually invented modern pop song phrasing.

Eric, you and Ken nailed me. I didn't appreciate Sinatra when I was a teenager, but was buying his albums in the early 60's (Only the Lonely) was the first ~1961? great songs and arrangements. It's funny, though, how tastes change. Hell, I was in my 40's before discovering the brilliance of Led Zep, and it was a bit later when the guitarists, Joe Satriani in particular got my attention. Now, I'm into the girl bluegrass singers, Alison Krauss, leading the way, but there's Vienna Teng, Melonie Cannon, Sierra Hull, (another prodigy), Claire Lynch, and my latest find Jessica Andrews, who's "When Gentry Plays Guitar" is my favorite song, (for now) :D

Oh, yeah! add The Wailing Jennys ...what a terrific trio.

He was well connected with the Mob, of course there is no such thing as the Mob.

He was a pretty damn good actor too (From Here to Eternity, The Manchurian Candidate, The Detective).

They play Rocky Fortune episodes on Sirius Old Time Radio. In it, Frank played a wise cracking private dick, who got involved in some very convoluted plots. It only lasted a year, according to the radio host. Very entertaining though. :)
