I took my Durango in Sat for an oil change at the Ford dealer, and while I was waiting, I test drove a new Fusion Sport and an SHO.
I think Motor Trend did great picking the Fusion as car of the year. The one I drove had the 3.5L engine and it was very lively and light on its feet. I didn't take it for a long drive, but it was put together well and very quiet. With the 3.5, it was also deceptively quick. Moderate throttle and just a few seconds and you were at 50mph. This car had just about everything on it except Nav and AWD and was 28K.
Next up was the SHO. VERY nice and plush car with plenty of geegaws, as you would expect in a $43K car. I LOVED the heated and cooled seats. My wide butt didn't fit nearly as well in this car as it does in the Marauder. The center console in the SHO is pretty wide, and takes up a lot of real estate that could be better used by my big ole butt.
I believe the new SHO would outrun my wife's GT convertible, and I'm sure that the Fusion 3.5 would at least keep up with if not outrun a stock MM. Both cars were beautiful in the new Tuxedo Black Metallic. If only the MM had that good of a paint job.
No doubt the SHO is a superior auto, but I would be perfectly happy driving the Fusion every day, and that extra $300/month would buy some pretty nice trips throughout the year.
Have you driven a Ford lately?
