View Full Version : Winter tire - traction control question

The winter tire/wheel setup that came with Phoebe is a set of 225/60-17s on some sort of Lincoln rim. They seem to work *alright*...definitely better than the factory tires would be, I'm sure, but the traction control obviously doesn't like the same-size-all-around thing.

I want to get a set of real proper SNOW tires for the rear and would like to size them so Bunny doesn't have to remember to switch off the T/C every time she starts the car all winter. It seems that 235/65-17 is really close to, but slightly more than, the factory offset. I calculate it's about 5.4% versus the stock offset of 4.8%.

Here are the numbers:

Stock tires: Front- 27.2" Rear- 28.5" difference= 4.78%
Winter tires: 27.6" all around. The tires I'm looking at are 29.1" difference= 5.4%. This is as close as I can reasonably find.

Does anyone know how forgiving the T/C is? Will this work properly?

(Please, no recommendations as to brand of tire...I already know which ones I want, I just want to know how to size them.)

I have 235/60-16 on the front and 235/70-16 on the rear with no T/C problems. I have 16" aluminum Grand Marquis rims.

I run a 235/50/18 in the front and a 255/55/18 in the rear. Traction control works fine. Traction is okay, much better than stock, but not totally wonderful. I am thinking about running a 225/60/18 with a deep lug pattern next season.

I'm running 235/70-16 on the front and 255/70-16 on the rear, no problems with the traction control unless I push the wheels to spin.

As long as their is slightly larger (taller) tire on the back traction control will be fine.

Anyone have any experience with General Tire Grabber HTS? I'm thinking about running these (255/55/18) on the rear.

Bob,

IIRC, as long as the stagger ratio is between 4.5% and 6.5% you should be okay.

I have 225/60/16 front and 225/70/16 rear. Remember skinnier works better in the snow.
