View Full Version : Where can I find window tint laws?

I know there are different laws from different states. I remember a few months back it was discussed here that Illinois is changing that law that will allow 35% on the front two windows. I cannot find that thread here anymore and all I can find on-line is dated information about 1998 laws and 2009.

There was something I found saying there will be a change in IL law in spring 2010, but I thought it was on new years day. I want to tint my windows, but now that I think of it I fear I'll only get more tickets even if I have the legal limit on the fronts.

Does anyone know where I can look this up or have any info on the law changing in IL?

Thanks.

The bill law# HB3325

still not convinced
Call the Legislative: 217-782-3944 or 217-782-2050
call them you feel better, and if any cop gave you a ticket just print the copy of the bill they should wave it.

and i have called almost every tint shop in the chicago land area and they have said it is legal to tint all around 35%...

Yeah,

Dom you can tint all windows (minus windshield) 35% or higher. IF you choose to tint any of the rears (rear doors back) darker than 35%, then you can not have any tint on the front windows at all.

You are right about that. i rather stay 35% all around than having a lemo tint in the back

Does anyone have a picture of 35% tint on their Marauder?

Thanks for the info guys.

I wouldn't trust a tint shops word though, they just want your money. I could look up the law then trust someone who is trying to sell you the product.

Dom from my experience if you are looking to do it darker if you did a 35 up front then like a 28 in the back they would balance each other out so you wouldn't be able to tell the difference and you probably wouldn't get hassled...

Dom mine has 32 on the sides and 22 on the back window.

It looks real dark from certain angles, but will probably limo tint the whole thing sooner or later.

Dom, mine is 35% in all back windows. And I thought the law said any darker than 35% in the back means you can only have 50% on the front. Ask any tint shop, they don't want the fines and they know the law.

I've had tints on all my cars since 86. The city LEO's were not as bad on ticket writing, but the "burbs" were. The tint shops never got fined, you got the ticket you show up in court with a receipt from a tint shop that shows it was removed case was dissmissed. It was called a "fix-it ticket" in those days. Some Burb's would make you pay a fine to "Keep it off the records". Been through this alot of times.

I like the safety factor with tints, there was a time people would pull up to a stop light, a person walk up smash the side window and steal whats on the seat. With the tints the glass never shattered on the first or second hit. SAFETY!

How are the cops to know the darkness level? What device will they use to determine this? They'll write the citation and let you provide the proof the the judge. There is still this gap thats open to interpretation on the cops side. I went to the court house with my cousin who works tactical, a nomal stop for a violation yeilds all types of small arms fire that are hidden from view, so from their veiw they will right the ticket and let the court decide.

Yes I have tints also, don't know how dark they are. My wife has the light tints, she'll never get stopped.

They have something they put up against the window to determine the percentage. I have heard about it used on highways, but I have no idea if the city has them.

I am sure a few LEO's on here know what I am talking about.

Cool. Now I know what it looks like. Does that machine print up anything? So on the ticket it can be proven that the tint is illegal instead of just words on paper?

I am not sure whether all units are visual display only or if some do have a printer. You can always ask the officer to show you the results and he/she should be willing to do so. In most cases, if you are cooperative and respectful to the officer, there should be no reason to give you anything but a warning. Often, the window tint (equipment) violation is given in lieu of a higher, more costly offense (such as a moving violation) and you have 24-hours to comply and have the ticket dismissed.

You've got that right! It's all about the attitude. I have talked my way outta so much stuff includding two arrests. I am not bragging, I'm just saying if one person respects the other, chances are they will get the same in return. There are a few jerks in the world, but you find them in any field.

Thank you for the info.

I can imagine Chicago paying extra money for this unit to be place in cars for official use. We just purchased 20 LIDAR guns for speed enforcement. We want money and not let you get off the hook. Now maybe they set up a safety check point and bring this device out, then that will generate income.

For those who may not know...

LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) is an optical remote sensing technology that measures properties of scattered light to find range and/or other information of a distant target. The prevalent method to determine distance to an object or surface is to use laser pulses. Like the similar radar technology, which uses radio waves, which is light that is not in the visible spectrum, the range to an object is determined by measuring the time delay between transmission of a pulse and detection of the reflected signal. LIDAR technology has application in Geomatics, archaeology, geography, geology, geomorphology, seismology, remote sensing and atmospheric physics. Applications of LIDAR include ALSM (Airborne Laser Swath Mapping), laser altimetry or LIDAR Contour Mapping. The acronym LADAR (Laser Detection and Ranging) is often used in military contexts. The term laser radar is also in use but is misleading because it uses laser light and not the radiowaves that are the basis of conventional radar.

All the BCSO cars have window tinting, so we're usually not "bothered" here in Florida with our personal vehicles. even when I lived on Long Island, I had [illegally] dark tint on all my cars and have never been questioned about it. Now if I were driving recklessly and brought attention to myself, then I would probably be written a summons for the tinting in addition to a moving violation. The best way to "get away" with dark window tinting is simply to avoid any unnecessary attention from the police. ;)

Not here. A lotta times people will walk to their cars to find a tinted window ticket. Other times just going down side streets police will pull u-turns and pull people over for tinted windows. Even in winter a friend of mine will put down his drivers window whenever he sees a police car going down the road.

In this city, it's best just not to have them.

As cool as they look.

Here is what I learned about this law. It goes into place Jan 1, 2010. It's House Bill 3325.
The terms are not clear (I'm no lawyer). So I called the Secretary of State Police #630/ 693-0551 Extension 0, ask to speak with a investegator. Here's how he explained it when he read from the chart.

1) Less than 30% on the rear window, the drivers window and the one adjacent can be no less than 50%...

2) 35% or more on the rear window, up to 35% on the drivers and adjacent window...

He also not sure when the state will be ordering these reflextive type meters. Each city in Illinois will spend their own budget on the meters themselfs.

Call the number I listed above to help!

Nothing is more annoying and inconsistent than the window tint laws. They are different for trucks than cars, because trucks (SUV's) fall into the same multi-passenger catagory as busses. What's the difference between a limo and a car, or a car and a SUV, when SUV's are being used in the same role as cars? But the laws governing both are different. I researched window tint before I did mine, because I didn't want to have to go through the trouble to do it over so some dumb jackass can make $150 for the city. Most places, it's pretty much 35% all around. If you go any darker than that, you're taking your chances.
