Has anyone tried the Escort Passport SRX? http://www.escortradar.com/srx.htm

I am going to go with either this system or a Valentine 1 with a laser jammer. I'd like to hear your opinions.

Don-

This seems to be the exact same thing as the system I just installed. I have a Passport 8500 and ZR3 shifter system. All this system does is combine the two from what I can read - even the displays look identical.

I'm in mine for $600 installed - not $1500. I don't see anything that this system does that mine does not - all it does is combine the detector with the laser system/jammer. I did read about it before purchase and was not convinced that it was any better. It even says "uses technology from the 8500 and shifting technology" in the ad.

I think it may just be packaging (size and less components) that are the cause of the price difference. I could be wrong of course, but I haven't seen or heard any differences between the two systems.

Just a thought.

I posted my system story last nite if you're interested.

Thanks,
-A

duhtroll,

I saw your post about your 8500 system with ZR3 shifter system. The advantage of the SRX is that it is built into the car. The inconvience for me is removing the radar detector from the car every time I park it. I had my window broken to get a Valentine 1 I had a few years ago. I thought the built in system would be a theft deterent and a convience.

I'll either go with the Valentine 1 and ZR3 laser shifter or a Passport SRX. I'm a big Valentine 1 fan but they don't sell a remotely installed system.

Where did you get the ZR3 laster shifter for under $300?

ebay, of course! :)

I agree the main advantage would be the installation, but mine is the same way except for the detector, and that pops off the windshield and into the console in 3 sec. I figured 3 sec. when I park it somewhere public like that (not many times will I have to worry in IA) was worth $900.

I also have read that any detector works 50% better when mounted centered and as high on the car as possible - as in top center of windshield. I don't know where the radar sensor goes on the SRX system, but I feel better with the increased "view" the height gives.

Just my $0.02

Thanks,

Hey, just be careful that when you post it high, nothing is blocking it from the back. But then again, think of it, when you stick your brand new cordless phone in the house, you get better distance if it's on the second or third floor....and radio transmitters are on top of mountians!

If you can afford the top of the line system that's great. But, again you can not beat the Beltronics 940/960/985 family of radar/laser detectors for the price or performance (read the web reports) if you are looking for a good detector. Yes, the laser detector does work. The Beltronics is nearly even with the Passport in all tests for less then half the price. (Keep in mind Passport bought Beltronics this year.) I find that the best location is above the mirror partially in front of the roof console with the detector window just below the black dots. You have to turn the unit upside down and then invert the unit's display. Throw away the terrible detector holder and buy one from Radio Shack for $5.00. It works great. In this location with any kind of window tint the detector can not be seen from behind. Also, connect your detector power cord into the mirror's power connector at the rear and no dangling detector cord.

Glenn: There's a power connector available on the rear view mirror? Can you describe it, please? Is there wire splicing involved, or are there bare terminals present, or is there actually some sort of connector? Thanks.

Shooter:

There is a 3 wire connector that plugs into the rear view mirror from the back side. It contains a ground, ignition-on 12 volts and a signal wire for the mirror. You have to carefully cut into the cable insulation to expose the 3 wires and then cut into the ground and 12v to connect to the detector power cord. These wires are small gauge and it takes some patience and careful soldering. An alternative to splicing into the existing cablel is to tap power directly from the cable connector. It could perhaps be even more easily done if you could located two resistor leads and push them into the connector slots where the ground and power wires terminate and then connect your detector power cord. I did mine several months ago and it works great.
