How to tell if its a Real "SS"

Im interested in buying a 87' Monte SS.. now ive heard plenty ways to to tell if its a "TRUE SS"... out of alll the things ive heard is that the vin number has to have the letter "G" in it... Ive heard "it has to start with 3G".... ive heard that the in the whole complete vin it has to have 3 G's... ive also heard that the fifth letter has to be a G...

can anyone assist me in this?.... i would appreciate it

I think they start with 1G.
For 1984-88 SS's, the 8th letter must be a 'G' as well, according to http://www.montecarloss.com/SS_FAQ_3.html

I do know that some of the 1984-88 SS's have 3 G's in the VIN, but not all of them.

If a VIN starts with 1G that means that it is a US-built GM product (Chevy's should actually be a C not a G). Our 2M Mercs are Canadian Mercury....1F is US Ford etc... so that doesn't mean anything if the VIN starts with 1G. Other than that, I'm sorry that I can't help determining if it's a real SS or not.

GM cars are weird, I just bought a 96 Impala SS on Saturday and the Vin is the same a Caprice 9C1 with the same engine code.

You wouldn't see that RPO code via the VIN. On the Impala SS if you look at the tag that's on the trunk lid you would see 9C1 on there but it's not there. The 9C1 and the Impala SS have different LT-1s, with the Impala's being the higher number hp/tq.

I would assume they are all actual SS's, because seriously, who would clone one? They aren't that rare, and by the time you pour all the money into cloning one, you could have bought one. I like them, always wanted one myself, but seriously, who would clone one.

Yup, my 94 9C1 did have 9C1 on the inner trunk label, my SS has WX3 in the same spot.
Not really sure what's the difference between the LT1 in the 9C1 and SS

If I remember correctly, the only major difference between the 9C1 and SS LT1 is the tune. Same engine (iron block/heads) but different program. Now they made 3 different LT1s during that time also. The lowly SS engine with the iron, the Z-28 engine with iron block/aluminum heads (believe it or not, the iron heads flow better for some reason) and then the Corvette aluminum^2 engine.

Come now, we shouldn't be surprised after all the Marauder clones we see around. If you replaced SS with Marauder in that sentence it would still make sense.

No, No No. According to the used car salesman I spoke with, the beat up Caprice with the plastic rear cop-car seat had the "Corvette motor" in it!!!!:rofl:

I didn't go into the details, but I said something like "they're both GM 5.7 liter v8's, but that's about it." I didn't add "and that beat up old cop car wouldn't be worth the 10 grand you are asking even if it DID have a Corvette engine in it!!!!!!!

Oh, wait, this was a thread about the Monte Carlo. I miss mine. It was only a 1979. I wanted an 80's SS, but it wasn't to be.

The only Tune a 9C1 Might have over an Impala is maybe not having a speed limiter (although My Impala didn't have a speed limiter, i've had it to 130 On closed road myself.

You can not tell an Impala SS by the VIN number alone (however there are guys on the Impala forum who have a Database of all Impalas made so you can send them a VIN if you have doubts) You need to verify the WX3 code is on the trunk lid RPO label. Then Make sure that the label matches the VIN.

Yea the VIN matches the trunk label's and no doubts here. Haven't been able to put her to the test yet on the top end. I had my Marauder at 130 w/o a tune on Rte 50 and i'm wondering what the cutoff on the Imp will be (160 on the dash I wonder). How common were those aero coupes my buddy in Hawaii has a 87 Monte Carlo SS with the same giant rear window. Reminds me of a fishbowl but I like it.

I know its a little more than 1000 but less than 1500 made. I thought I remember 1100 or so made. Just enough to make it legal for NASCAR at the time.
