View Full Version : Bent the crankshaft.

One of my best buds is stationed on the USS New York. It has 7 and a half tons of steel in the bow from the World Trade Centers remains. Each repair locker onboard is named after an Engine Company that suffered the loss of firefighters. It also has 4 engines, throwing down 40,000 HP!! One of the engines wiped a few bearings due to a bent crankshaft. Here is a picture of 1 of the engines going in, look how small the people are compared to it.

I can't wait to hear what the repair bill is for this engine rebuild, zoiks!

WHAT! -- this is a brand NEW commissioned Naval ship. Someone is going to pay big time for this mistake. They're going to have to pull the entire engine out of the ship to replace the crackshaft. That's going to be a BIG and costly job.

Exactly. As you can see, they set the engines in and build the ship AROUND them. I've been down and looked at the engines, BIG. They are talking about doing a pierside repair, but I just don't see it happening.

That is correct, and they keep them fairly freakin hot even in port when they aren't running. The lube oil is kept pre-heated, so just standing by them, you feel the heat from those bad boys. And, almost all the piping on the ship is Titanium, so it even out blings ol' DOOM.;)

The DDG's have gas-turbine engines that run off of basically jet fuel. Weird looking at them and seeing giant Rolls-Royce placards on the sides of them.

http://www.wavy.com/dpp/military/USS-New-York-undergoing-engine-repairs

The ship is now undergoing repairs. After reading a bunch about these engines, my eyes are tired. They are not only big but complex. Articles and presentations by consultants on these engine have a lot to say about bearing failures but I couldn't find anything about bent crankshafts per say. If you believe the print from the makers about these engines, they should work fine and last a long time. To fail so soon after purchase, around two months, is very unusual.

Like our cars from the factory with the inner tire wear, or the axles or the DS head failures. It will be fixed I'm sure.

This looks like very interesting fields of employment.

I thought I recognized those Colt-Peilsticks.
Likely the crankshaft was bent during handling or because of improper bedding/mounting. Should have been enough instrumentation during testing and ops to predict that.

BTW, w/o the navy the marines are just another bunch of gi's. :)

And you wouldn't have NCIS!

Pat

Juno;

Your probably right, with a 62 ton engine little things can make a big difference.

It would seem the testing instrumentation and contractor involvement did find the problem(s) early on, since only two months elasped from sea trials (?) to repair dock IMO.

The methodology and extensive testing is so complex and comprehensive that it warrants it's own web site as your probably already know.

I bet it was a hard pill to swallow when the engineers broke the bad news to the Captain, Navy, Contractors (all up and down the line).

I wonder if we will ever find out about the fix?

I bet they deceide to cut the crankshaft in the engine and install custom undersize bearings. To remove the engine would be a HUGE multi-million job.

Even the Army doesn't believe that. See my sig. I can come up with plenty more.

We don't need the Navy's help to:

Guard the Embassies with only a handfull of people.
Fly the presidential helos.
Guard the NAVY's nuclear weapons.

It's kind of funny how the Air Force took us on my last deployment, no help needed from the Navy.

NCIS is pretty badass, though.

Nuclear powered, funky looking. There is a sight glass that looks like a telescope sticking into the "core area" for lack of a better term. We used to call down and tell them we had a new guy who wanted to look in there, so by the time we got down there they would have already put shoe polish on the rubber eye rest. So the FNG leans back from it with a big goofy grin and a gigantic black eye. HA! Good times.

LOL....A good friend was in the Navy on a Sub support/repair ship.
He would joke about how they were the only Navy ship that was welded to the dock!
He had some interesting stories of the cranes dropping all sorts of very dangerous cargo!!!

They would duct tape the FNGs to the overhead pipes where no one would notice them.

BTW: From the title of the thread.....I thought that you were too drunk and hit the headboard with your junk.

I still wonder why is it we can have something nuclear powered making 4 million HP for a crew of roughly 5,000 but people go ballistic when the idea is floated to build a new reactor on land that would service hundreds of thousands of people "because it's unsafe." That's unsafe? How about 2 reactors surrounded by jet fuel and bombs.
